In comments at a private police conference, Flock CEO Garrett Langley said backlash to the company wasn't "real" and the work of "bots." Also he said his wife advised him to never apologize. Read now: www.404media.co/in-leaked-au...

Austin Walker has consistently put out incredible work, from the craft of Friends At The Table to incredible crit at Waypoint, and even the iconic "take so bad" tweet, and yet his finest writing to me is "it's pronounced Blas-twah"

To play in the space and simultaneously explain myself, though, it's about obstacles being rewarding to take out vs. punishing to not do so. There is no benefit to fighting in Metroid. Enemy drops only mitigate harm by recharging ammo/health. SotN rewards you for killing guys as you go.

My take is that this is part of why "Metroidvania" is a bad term, at least as it has been adopted. Its original incarnation - limited to describing Castlevanias specifically - makes sense, but looking at Super Metroid vs SotN presents very few actual similarities.

Metroid's items tend to be better ways to avoid or mitigate enemies. Thinking of how Echoes starts with the Dark World being terrifying but by the end you can Annihilator Beam a light crystal and insta kill all enemies in a room. Remove the annoyances.

But they also always open up more foes. Getting the morph ball means you now have to deal with guys in ducts. Or figure out grappling. SotN's obstacles are usually "oh shit there's a big guy who's a pain but drops 1000 XP" and when you can oneshot them they give way less.

This, funnily enough, makes the original Castlevanias less like SotN and more like Metroid in purpose. Which strikes me as intentional. You are supposed to feel alien and oppressed in those. Even though he loses powers, Alucard storms Dracula's castle with no care. He's home.

but that's also got me trying to figure out what the difference between the Metroid-centered search-action game and the Castlevania-centered one is. Is it just melee versus missile combat? Platforming intricacy? Narrative focus?

I think the average person has no idea how a video game is made and so it makes sense they would focus on wanting to save an IP and not the devs behind it. Being on an AAA team means there are a handful of chosen speakers at the top, and the average worker can’t speak out or risk losing their job.

The Star Wars episode three “making of a minute” documentary was what taught me how a movie gets made, and we don’t really have something like that for games, I reckon.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

After the first round elections, Congressman André Janones created a WhatsApp channel titled “Lula’s Army.” It ballooned to 10 million people following his commands on how to behave online to counteract Meta’s far-right-favouring algorithms. The right knows how to use socials. We must learn, too.

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.
