A cash-strapped rural police force struggles to deal with Red Diesel gangs. Until its chief inspector realises can get the Met Police to deal with the problem... ...if he pretends they're Iranian. A new six part comedy starring Toby Jones.
The security services remain tight-lipped about possible motives. Russian sabotage, Islamist extremism and direct action from anti-war protesters were not ruled out. But, given the context, Iran would be an obvious suspect

It's called film "footage" because camera operators initially held the cameras with their feet. That changed after a film shoot in 1931, when an operator got a foot cramp and was forced to hold the camera in his hands. The "footage" he got that day was extraordinary. That man's name? Hans Cameraman.

As I keep pointing out, does no one understand Ricardian comparative advantage anymore. FACT: China produces over 1 million engineering graduates per year FACT: To date, China has not produced a single internationally marketable game show format Where does it look like our advantage lies?

Unfortunately, I wasn't even joking... #TheBeatles #YellowSubmarine
I started an exact recreation of The Bayeux Tapestry with only characters and designs from #TheBeatles' Yellow Submarine animated film... Fortunately, a voice in my brain intervened and screamed, 'What in god's name are you doing? This will take you years!' So, I've put it aside. For now.

I've written about Neets for the LRB. It is odd listening to recent debates about this completely ignore the overwhelming fact of this current crisis, that it is one of inactivity, disability, mental ill-health and neurodevelopmental disorders (as I discuss) www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

I remember being so surprised when I first read up on the Falklands, having not lived through it and just having this default assumption of "Thatcher = bad ∴ Falklands war = bad", "she just did it to get re-elected", etc. The worst person you know just made a just war
Throw your non-English friends into disarray today by reminding them that the Falklands War was an anti-fascist conflict and an explicit defence of the right to self-determination.

Given trans people are less than 1% of the population, getting it wrong 4% of the time means you are 4x as likely to misgender a cis woman than spot someone is trans. This is without accounting for the effects of hormones, surgery etc. Absolute madness from the EHRC chair. A "human rights" body.

good to see the government hasn’t or chooses not to recognise where ‘a lot of people’ get their information is a polluted & toxic environment; it’s like saying you shouldn’t close a well that’s poisoning people because ‘a lot of people’ get their water there
Lammy says he doesn't think the Govt should come off X because that's where a lot of people get their information. FFS.

Indeed. In the 1960s many more people held racist attitudes but both the government and opposition were consistent in condemning open racism. We now have am emboldened and tolerated minority by both government and opposition.
The normalisation of right wing discourse in both major political parties, let alone in much of the media, has been one of the most striking, and disturbing, changes in my lifetime. Things weren’t great in the 1960s (Smethwick) but this is off the scale.

This is a really interesting article about someone who I previously knew nothing about. The fact that he was one of the very few people to be acquitted of High Treason is remarkable but passes merely as an aside. I thought this conclusion is also interesting.

I refuse to believe that, in the last 1,200 years, not a single novice monk has accidentally spilled a drink over or otherwise extinguished this flame, before quickly re-lighting it off a ciggie and pretending nothing happened. Eternal my arse
Reikado Hall, the sacred site of a flame that has been continuously lit for more than 1,200 years, according to Buddhist spiritual leaders, burned down on Wednesday in southwestern Japan. The flame itself was salvaged after the blaze and moved to a different site.
