"he's still at the school gate, kicking dead teachers" is stuck in my brain forever as the best way of describing the worst kinds of autobiography.

Odd This Day@oddthisday.bsky.social

It is, today, not the 13th anniversary of the publication of Steven Morrissey’s autobiography (it had been out for ten days) but something much better: the 13th anniversary of the Sunday Times publishing A. A. Gill’s merciless mauling of it—a review which went on to win Hatchet Job of the Year

Shout if you're a historian potentially interested in coming on for this one. i want to cover the discussions on repatriation, changes to headstones and Anglican ritual, and post-war grave tourism and grave photography services. @caitlindeangelis.bsky.social your wheelhouse maybe?

i really want to do a pod episode on the emotional mechanics of post-war rememberance. the logistics and architecture are both fascinating, but we don't talk enough about its impact on both national and personal approaches to grief.

Prince Maurice's grave is interesting, because it was a good example of the conflicting thoughts families had. Princess Beatrice refused repatriation of the body. She felt he belonged with his men. But she fought for years for the right to spend her own money on a custom headstone. This was blocked

In reality if you chose a personal inscription for a relative's war grave, and didn't pay the invoice, the Commision would rarely (if ever) chase for the money. Which was the right thing to do. But some soldiers will never have got an inscription because poorer families didn't know about this.

So today those personal inscriptions, ans and Prince Maurice's grave, are a constant reminder of how complex rememberance was. Both as war raged and in the aftermath. There was debate and counter-debate. But through it all, people trying to find the best and fairest way forward, with empathy.

For Beatrice, like many families, They could accept not having the body, and believed in the general principle of all war dead staying together. But it was about being able to pay in some way towards a funerary or memorial rite. A cultural and, for some, religious thing as much as personal.

This was a key contributor to the War Graves Commission changing its policy on personal inscriptions on the headstone. And, more importantly, the decision to CHARGE, per-letter, for those inscriptions. That decision was controversal with some, but created a path to contributing for others.

it is worth thinking though about the insane level of chance it took for that combo to happen. If you wrote a story where the guy who planned Gallipoli ended up PM with the Major who may literally have been the last guy out as his DPM, they'd call it too forced.

Churchill + Attlee was an incredible leadership combo. They complimented each other's wartine strengths and weaknesses, and both were self-aware enough to know it. THAT was what made the National Government work.

this isn't funny. Gripens only flair their necks like this when they're stressed.

RIP Walter Koenig. Of all his moments on Star Trek, one of his finest was accurately portraying an officer stuck doing bridge duty while massively hungover (Star Trek VI)

I'm not joking btw. It's great being able to do the big acting moments. But being able to accurately portray a raging hangover without it being over the top is hard shit. Walter Koenig nailed it.

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.
