Going down a little rabbit hole of black and white images of contrails, which are oddly beautiful (hello chemtrail nutters of the internet 👋). But this one of 8th AF escorts above B-24s in July 1944 makes me wonder about the wingman out of position desperately trying to catch up with his leader.

I mean, that guy is waaaaaaay out of position, and maybe he is in that cockpit bricking it trying to catch up or waiting for the next weave over the formation and hoping the leader makes a turn to the right so he can cut the corner. All while watching his fuel, his six and everything else.

Shout if you're a historian potentially interested in coming on for this one. i want to cover the discussions on repatriation, changes to headstones and Anglican ritual, and post-war grave tourism and grave photography services. @caitlindeangelis.bsky.social your wheelhouse maybe?

i really want to do a pod episode on the emotional mechanics of post-war rememberance. the logistics and architecture are both fascinating, but we don't talk enough about its impact on both national and personal approaches to grief.

This is a superb pod as we eagerly await Minus Zero. The Japanese right-wing interpretation of Godzilla as an avenging spirit of the souls of soldiers who have not been honoured is wild. @nhledbetter.bsky.social on top form here.

Rather surprised at some people, who I do respect, calling for the rebuilding of the Eagle's Nest, using imagery of Easy Company as one of the reasons. That place should have been bulldozed like the Berghof years ago.

Or Rear Window, a film that involves a guy ignoring Grace Kelly basically spending 90 mins offering to whip off all the haute couture and get on Jimmy Stewart and he is more interested in what's going on across the street. That is some twisted stuff right there.

66 years ago today, October 24 1960, at Baikonur Cosmodrome's Pad 41 a R-16 ICBM exploded on the ground and killed dozens of workers who were around at the time. About a month and a half later a KH-2 CORONA satellite captured the scorched pad from orbit: spacefromspace.com/declassified...

Been going down a polka dot rabbit hole and found this image in the NARA collection. A polka dotted B-24 assembly ship is great. But... The two streaks in the sky – what do you think those are? 🤔 V2s? Escorts high above what I would guess is the Norfolk coast? There wasn't a date on the image.

Ummmm... I'm pretty sure @aptshadow.bsky.social warned us about this sort of thing... I'm mean, I know Rex wanted to be a 'Good Boy' despite wondering why the 'little humans' were easier to kill, Bees and Honey were cool, but Dragon was an arsehole. Still, bad idea. H/T @nickharkaway.com

I do love a silver razorback P-47 Thunderbolt. Brutish yet shiny. Here is an original Kodachrome image and the zoomed-in crop from the original NARA file. 42-27607 was flown by 2Lt Richard D. Stark of the 82nd FS, 78th FG and was shot down on 3rd Sept 1944. Stark became a POW. #avgeek #aviation

Looking through the NARA images today, hunting down Kodachrome ones, and came across this well-known image of P-51B-15-NA 42-106950 'The Iowa Burt'. I've not seen this image so clean before, and the original file is 83 MB. Screw you IWM, this is how you do photos. #avgeek

I mean, this image, showing a dozen P-51Cs and Ds of the 361st Fighter Group tooling up on some (I'm guessing from the tail) B-17s in late summer 1944 (they have stripes), is 331 MB, and you can zoom in almost to your hearts' content... This is how you digitally conserve.

A thought on Amazon Prime Ads: they are selected to be so bad that you are willing to pay extra for the ad free tier, right? The ad for the bank I will now never bank with, where the son in Australia is extorting his parents for rent money, is excretable. Leave the prat to the dingos.

Looking through the NARA catalogue, I found these images of Concorde F-WTSA, the 4th aircraft built, in Anchorage, Alaska, in Oct 1974 during the Concorde West Coast sale tour. While making headlines, it wasn't a successful trip. Sierra-Alpha flew in a dual BA/Air France livery. #aviation #avgeek

Sometimes YouTube comments send you down fascinating rabbit holes. On the WACO Air Museum video, one of my subscribers pointed out that Jackie Coogan, the kid in The Kid with Chaplin, Betty Grable's ex and Uncle Fester in the original Adams Family, flew CG-4s with the 1st Air Commando in the CBI.

And for all my complaining about John Williams recycling himself, I am sat here smiling at the similarities of The Rocketeer score with Horner's own Wrath of Khan score. 😁

Currently reading an advanced copy of James R Hansen's Solo and Together about Anne and Charles Lindbergh. I still don't like 'Lucky Lindy' but seeing him through Anne's eyes through his letters is fascinating and I have more respect for Anne. Haven't gotten to Jr. or all the fascism yet.
