Hot take: You should build social apps so people can be social, not so you can eventually trap people in a room they no longer want to be in

Maybe the real moats are the drawbridges we'll build along the way? In my latest augment piece, I re-think "moats" for the open social web by seeing what @standard.site, @blackskyweb.xyz's Acorn, and bridges like @ap.brid.gy + @wafrn.netΒ have done for the ecosystem.

"but he fought for fair use!" no, he fought for himself, there were just positive ripple effects for everyone else, and he rode that like a false god for the rest of his career until he decided it worked against him

i wish ethan klein exponentially the pain i felt every time i saw one of my close friends turn into a monster as they fell down the "i'm anti-sjw, i can say the n and f word whenever i want" path

most folks only saw this side when his fight with hasan started, but he's been this vile creature since day one, he just hid behind "edgy comedy" like most of these top-of-funnel dudes do

i've seen that gross human treat progressives like trash for the last decade and saw my male friends align with that ideology in the vein of "it's just edgy humor, bro", i am so glad his last couple of years have been hell and it's only downhill from here

like, i know a lot of folks saw him as some goofy edgy dude, but he was the start of a lot of men's alt-right rabbit hole and i will laugh at his demise every chance i get

be still, my millennial heart

what most people don't realize is that your favorite website or app - yes that one - has likely always been covered in the digital equivalent of duct tape and wd40 and is still holding on at the seams and creaking with every click

This post is unavailable.

internet companies don't have folks running around w/ pagers for no reason, everything is ready to break. ppl who use it demand it run 24/7, and often tape is the quickest way to fix an issue. and companies don't want to pay for tape removal, they want new features they'll get paid for. piles up.

Spent too much time creating the preview image for: foryou.club/atmosphere I pulled the current profile pics of the Bluesky accounts for each of the apps that the cross-lexicon For You feed shows. Not sure what's the deal with @pckt.blog Can you spot an Easter egg?

Agreed. We need to build apps that corporate spots cannot replicate instead of taking development cues from them. Making people choose this over that is just re-creating the same issues we've had for the last two decades. We shouldn't be building today's apps by yesterdays myopic paradigms.

I just lost my job, totally blindsided πŸ™ I've been developing iOS since 2012, and now I've been deep into agentic Engineering, especially this year. My family situation requires me to work remotely. I live in Utah, USA. Please spread the word πŸ™πŸ½ Any help? 🩷

one of the reasons i'm holding back catsup rn. really proud of some of the ux ideas i've thrown in here and i hope people see it's a labor of love - i'm expecting a when-you-know-you-know moment for dropping it in ga beta.

This is what I'm trying to do with Reams. I want to make the best software 🫑

the alpha feedback has been so damn helpful in making it better, too, i've really appreciated all the folks playing with this very different and weird way of keeping up with the people you care about in this messy, random feed we call home.

one of the best things about the feedback so far is that people immediately understand the goals of the project without me having to explain it, and they give advice/ideas within its scope. the narrative is clear, the storytelling just needs some editing and tweaking πŸ”§

Replying to @alexbenzer.com

some folks reported not being able to use certain adult-focused platforms (like onlyfans and fansly) β€” there was an internal miscommunication and these were accidentally added to the list of disallowed domains. this is now fixed! but you may need to refresh your app to get the update. πŸ’™
