๐Ÿช spaces alpha release ๐Ÿช folks, this is the big one! lots of updates across pretty core protocol mechanisms. hopefully the last/only of it's kind (tho we are planning another release next Thurs)

discourse.atmosphere.communityAtproto spaces alpha updatesWe just cut another spaces alpha release today! This is the biggest yet, there are multiple breaking changes across core protocol pieces. This is likely the last/only release of this size. Though we ...

GM. We are going to win. An internet where 4 corporations wall us all into their surveillance state and make us pay rent forever is just incompatible with human flourishing. The only question is how long it takes everyone propping up history's worst billionaires to figure this out.

Anthropic found the origin of the NIST elliptic curve seeds: they were generated with drand48()! No one was seriously worried, but this should put some FUD to rest, completing the NIST ECC rehabilitation arcโ€ฆ just in time to be retired in favor of PQ. Also, we raised $36 Ki for ISRG. Yay!

words.filippo.ioThe NIST Elliptic Curves Seeds Bounty Has Been ClaimedWe now know how the seeds of the NIST elliptic curves were generated: theyโ€™re not the hash of some saucy sentence, but the output of drand48() seeded with the time, which was indeed in 1997โ€“98.

that basically explains why AI stuff blows itโ€™s like auto-tune for ideas, like yeah you hit the note but you lose the subtlety, the richness, the soul

ofc you can correct this by saying โ€œdonโ€™t over pick 7 or under pick it. really try for a uniform distributionโ€ but itโ€™s an uphill battle and this is a tiny isolated example. obvs way harder to head off with anything of actual complexity

checkout my presentation on atproto spaces from FediForum last week! I was shooting for a not-too-technical presentation that introduced our design goals for spaces and the current design of the protocol. lots of analogies to existing atproto!

@dholms.at came to #FediForum last week to give the first public presentation on "Atproto spaces", the new permissioned data and private spaces protocol from Bluesky. Missed it? We have a recording in our PeerTube channel: https://spectra.video/w/p/6P87exJeckBwbGtAijeKJ1?playlistPosition=2

give us a shout or post in the thread if you're coming to IETF 127! remember: the hackathon on the weekend is free and a great way to get acquainted with the IETF

atproto spaces is shaping up! we're getting pretty close to what I expect will be the beta spec. ("beta" meaning in-production on bsky PDSes with real users) however, there's still room to maneuver. if something in the alpha isn't working for you, this is a good time to bring it up!

i'm doing a followup FediForum presentation a week from today, this time introducing atproto spaces! come hang and learn about the new protocol with the fediverse crew

Atproto Spaces is the most eagerly awaited new addition to AT Protocol in recent memory. But how does it work and what cool new Open Social Web functionality does it enable? We are very happy to announce that next week at FediForum, @dholms.at, head of protocol at Bluesky, will tell us all [โ€ฆ]

I'm excited to announce that the PLC Organization now has a statute! And a bank account! And a @standard.site publication! All the important stuff. The PLC Org is an independent Swiss Association meant to operate the PLC directory, which collects and distributes signed updates to atproto accounts.

i think we need to do a permission sets push... permission sets are mainly for giving nice human-readable, user-friendly descriptions of resources! if your OAuth screen looks like this, consider publishing/using permission sets. this is scary/useless/non-sensical to users

honestly authorization servers probably need to start flagging bare permissions like this as dangerous! like these should be in red and say "only click authorize if you know what these NSIDs mean" maybe this warning could be softened if all the resource NSIDs match the client id domain?

come tell me why i'm an idiot & the protocol sucks (but really, the alpha period is for kicking the tires & collecting feedback. come chat with us about what's working for you and what isn't!)

on thursdays we drop the latest/greatest updates to the spec on the atproto spaces alpha host. first round of updates are now live! if you're interested in building against atproto spaces while it's in alpha, you can read more and get access here: atproto.com/blog/atproto...

atproto.comThe Atproto Spaces Alpha is LiveAtproto Spaces, formerly known as โ€œthe permissioned data protocol,โ€ is a new extension to atproto that enables non-public data. The alpha is now officially open. Hereโ€™s how to develop with it and what to expect as we work towards the full release.

just wrapped up deploying a spaces alpha release! nothing too bad, but some applications that make use of simplespaces will likely break take a look at the breaking changes here: discourse.atmosphere.community/t/atproto-sp...

SV tech companies have a long history of doing the opposite of what they claim would be satisfying & ironic if this also happened the first time they've mask off said "we're going to restructure society & replace you and everything you care about"

I am not going to pretend to be able to predict how all this shakes out, but I think it's possible that instead of Evil Silicon Valley making everyone else irrelevant as threatened, it's possible everyone else will make them irrelevant instead, which would be delightful.

@thisismissem.social @divy.zone and I recently went through an exploration of how the browser can help you login to websites with atproto accounts. We recently presented to the FedID CG and here is a sneak peek in case you couldn't join! This is early but we'd love your input before we go too far!

i mostly think the "y'all" thing is funny cause growing up (in the ozarks) my mom encouraged me not to say it along with words like "ain't" because it sounded hick & people would look down on it & now the same social contexts that she worried about adopted it as the *more* socially-acceptable term

anyways, it's a good word! i'm glad more people are using it. it does often sound performative, but just keep practicing & you'll be able to use it naturally soon ๐Ÿ˜‰
