I have plenty of hate in my heart, but negative polarization is like dry rot in your soul. You don’t want find yourself saying things like “people who have trouble with English are not welcome” for ostensibly ethical reasons.

hooooo boy we don't like this no we don't > If you don't speak English, you need to find a different community. We cannot distinguish between AI-written and AI-translated. Since you don't speak English, you can't even verify yourself if it translated correctly. www.reddit.com/r/opensource...

The world right now feels like when I went down to LA to deal with my childhood bedroom after the earthquake. Everything formerly meaningful is in a pile on the floor and it's, OK, what's neither shameful nor broken beyond repair, and worth taking into the future, except it's every institution.

1) AD&D 2e with occasional 1e sourcebooks because the FLGS was selling both and we didn’t know the difference. 2) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness 3) Twilight: 2000 2nd ed. <~15 year gap> 4) D&D 4e 5) Trail of Cthulhu or 13th Age; I’m not sure which was first.

Alphastream@alphastream.bsky.social

First 5 RPGs played? 1) D&D (Moldvay, AD&D) 2) Shadowrun (1E, 2E) (Gap of like 10-12 years) 3-5) Deadlands, then probably Hong Kong Action Theater and Werewolf the Apocalypse, all in like 2 months with a Philly gaming club that blew my mind!

It’s just very hard for many adults to conceptualize teenagers as “people.”

Daphne Keller@daphnek.bsky.social

“Child safety” measure that restrict teenagers’ access to information and ability to communicate with each other should 100% be seen in the context of youth protest movements — in India, France, the U.S., Mexico, the Philippines, and a whole lot more places.

BRETT KAVANAUGH: "Can you explain exactly how the consent would work?" Just saying... if *I* were Brett Kavanaugh, *I* WOULDN'T ASK A QUESTION SHOWING THAT I WAS CONFUSED HOW CONSENT WORKS! But maybe that's just me.

Dolly Parton could have been a billionaire. She could have simply used her money to make more money. Instead, she wrote a fuckin' check whenever it was helpful for her to write a check. Any of these assholes have the capability to be her, but none of them have the heart.

if you think of "speed limit" as really an energy limit (mv^2) (and it is energy that kills, not speed), the equivalent to a 20mph ebike limit would be something like 3-5mph for a two-ton SUV.

If you want to preserve old books for public access, fund libraries. If you want to make the contents of out of print books more widely available, shorten the term of copyright. Do those two things and there is no reason to stress about destructive scanning.

Today is July 25th, often celebrated as the fall of Italian fascism. Mussolini passed draconian controls over pasta production which he considered decadent and overly reliant on foreign grain. Today, we celebrate his fall with a simple, defiant partisan dish: 1) Pasta 2) Creamy butter 3) Parmesan

Every person I know who failed the California bar exam is currently practicing law. You’ll be fine, regardless of how it goes next week.

The bar exam is next week. I teach the bar studies course every spring at Akron and I coach students for the July exam every summer. If you are studying for the bar (or know someone who is) I have some thoughts for you as you approach the exam. 🧵

I am an ebike sicko and I hate these people even more because they’re fucking it up for people that just want a bike that can go uphill a little easier. We should have more light electric vehicles. Also they should have functional brakes and not pretend to be bicycles.

A punitive view of education will never have the answer to what to do when students can use AI. A view of education that cares about motivating students will. In a world where student motivation needs to be earned not just enforced it's pretty clear that's the only way to elicit effort.

I think I will be home with recuperating child, but this sounds like a blast for Easy Bay folks.

Honestly, everyone in America should experience America like World Cup fans have. Go to places you haven't been, eat the local food, have a blast. This country is huge and most people barely ever see any of it.

There’s been a lot of talk in this race about what makes a "real man." A man does what’s right when no one is watching. He upholds his commitments to his family and neighbors. He doesn’t lie, cheat, & steal his way through life. Real men serve others. Weak men serve themselves.
