First, we looked at circadian control: Even without external light cues, the spiders kept their own activity rhythm. This free-running rhythm shows that their sleep-wake cycle is controlled by an internal circadian clock. 🧵3/9

Earlier work revealed REM-like activity in another jumping spider species, including twitching, leg curling, and even retinal movements. But one question remained: were the spiders truly asleep? 🧵2/9

It genuinely does suck and is *bad* that it feels like there’s almost nowhere to go for people who 1. Want to work on robotics (like drones) and 2. Don’t want to build weapons.

Yes.

I'm sorry but banning non-English speakers because machine translation is unclean is more fascist than anything in the AI space except maybe Palantir's XAI enterprise account

i really dislike this purity argument, where having some kinds of restricted mutation preserving strong guarantees is the same as “doing almost nothing to restrict normal mutability”

And this is the corrollary. People are different, bc of cultural background, neurodivergence, whatever, and you gotta try and look past the surface expression for the intent behind it, and trust that people offline in normal social settings usually aren't just randomly dicks, before you judge.

Orual@nonbinary.computer

I will say that I think the common expression of some of them by neurotypical people can be really uncomfortable if you're not. Like getting let down easily mostly just hurts more bc of the anticipation for me! And things like that. You need to adjust to the person. But the principle is the same.

Neurotypical social norms are not actually mostly arbitrary bullshit! The specific mechanics can be silly for the same reason the vagus nerve is silly, evolution over time, but they're mostly active "I am mindful that you are another person with feelings and I am not treading on them" signalling.

I see autistic masking discourse going around again. Neurotypical social norms *are* understandable. Acting neurotypical is doable if high effort (my mom is like this). You can get a long way by being a kind of weird that doesn't rub people the wrong way, which is much easier. But it hinges on this:

With that as your lens, think about norms like leading with praise if you have bad news, asking how they're doing, giving a white lie answer to that question, even eye contact. And if you can't hit all the notes perfectly, you can at least be or act *sincere* in your caring.

Good actors don't perform by mimicking facial expressions blindly, they generally think of something that brings up the right emotions for the character and scene and then that shows through. I find ways to be curious about people, and to care about them as people, at least a bit.

Watching Megalopolis tonight in theatre. Coppola’s doing a text Q+A during the movie, moderated by his son. Apparently there’s also a letter we’re supposed to open and read before the show? I’m so excited :D

Being high agency is never enough to guarantee you will get what you want. But it will put you at a substantial advantage compared to most. Be persistent, put yourself out there even when it's hard, shoot your shots, take as much control over your destiny that you can.

Accurate. Butcher is hella sexist and a mid writer but that doesn't make his books not extremely fun reads.

4. The Harry Dresden books are not necessarily good per say but they are very enjoyable

God yes. The number of people who seem to confuse LotR for the Belgariad when criticizing it. Tolkien has many flaws as an author, but LotR is not remotely a by the numbers example of the genre it spawned except on the very very, very surface.
