*person who fucking loves it in this town, paraphrased*: i think y'all need to stop moping about how boring this town is and just go find one or two things that you enjoy, so you can suck it up and stop complaining and daydreaming about moving to the big city where all the stuff you actually like is

i remember in our classes human-level machine translation was treated as basically this impossible-to-achieve Holy Grail of the field and now it just exists

the ideal combination is insane ambition and formal structure, without the second as scaffolding it collapses into slop or endless gastown-style epicycles

Ethan Mollick@emollick.bsky.social

My general advice for using AI for any purpose is to ask yourself: "how do I make what I am doing even more ambitious?" You do this over and over until you either hit a wall and thus learn the shape of the jagged frontier (useful!) or you find out that the AI can do more than you think (common!)

friends & family tech support is even more annoying nowadays because i am literally just acting as a go-between that human-washes ChatGPT output for a luddite who won't touch AI

lately ketamine sessions have felt "easier" in a weird way. like my mind was resisting before but has been resisting less and less recently. the feeling brings to mind how it feels to have done a really thorough detangling of my (very long) hair, it always feels smoother than i thought possible.

I do not think that we should have democratic control over every aspect of our lives. The point of human rights and limited government is a stronger guarantee than simply "Currently a majority of the populace thinks I should have them". This should not be a hot take.

i'm late to the party but Teenage Sex And Death At Camp Miasma is a masterpiece and if you are a woman who loves women and you can even just tolerate slasher movie tropes it is must watch. i won't say i didn't know i needed to see Gillian Anderson like that, bc i did know, but they sure delivered.

i do not like horror movies, as a rule, so you know this pico review is for real. watch it unless you will literally faint at the sight of fake blood. or you're straight, i guess

A lot of people seem confused because AI both lowers the floor AND raises the ceiling. They se slop and assume thats all that's possible. But special is possible but takes effort! Don't listen to people who cannot imagine using a powerful tool to do anything but put minimal effort in.

i guess this is me coming out as clearly as i have to date as an institutionalist and no longer an anti-organizationalist. it turns out all the shit i thought was bad about organizations is actually the default case for human cooperation, and properly designed organizations actually minimize it.

Grass Toucher Georg@avengingfem.me

i think the core problem here is not "they are polyamorous" (full disclosure: i am also polyamorous) or "they are kinky" (likewise) but that their style of social organization is intentionally informal and personalistic and ambiguous, rather than formal and institutional and clearly-defined.

a counterargument to the "no ai authorship attribution on commits" position. leaning in this direction myself after having been in the "no attribution to ai" camp for a while.

It's not just advertising: if I use AI assistance, I'd rather disclose than not, because I want people to be aware that it was not entirely my own work, even if I have checked it over myself. People have a right to know whether they're interacting with an unassisted human, a centaur, or a machine.

onions are the worst thing to be incapable of eating. people want to put them in fucking everything. you don't have to worry about green beans randomly ending up in literally any savory dish, but onions sure do! "this vegetable is nasty, lets put it in everything" why tho!!!

in this world, if Smart People wanna coordinate with each other on something bigger than one person can achieve alone, they should do so via direct rhetorical persuasion of other Smart People, with no gatekeepers or institutional controls of any kind.

it is true that this allows one to move forward much faster than if you do have such things. but it also allows for all the stuff in the post above, and easy denial that any of it matters. nobody really has formal power, after all! they are just little low status guys, don't worry about anything.

rationalists believe a Smart Person should not be bound by any rules or contained by any institutional structure, because the Smart Person knows the right answer, knows the right thing to do, knows what should happen. the rules and the institutions just get in the way, slow them down.

about 2/3 of the way through Kevin Roose's The AGI Chronicles, and reading this post made me realize what's wrong with it. none of this is in the book. the book is so shallow it feels like it covers just the layer of snow on the tip of the iceberg that is the AI industry.

tbh it feels more like a book to give to a normie. if you've been following AI stuff for years, i won't say you won't learn anything, i do learn things, but it's little nuggets here and there. it will feel pretty low information density.

this got necro-liked by @norvid-studies.bsky.social and wow, it's wild how different everything feels. despite plenty of life challenges (various ongoing health problems, household might be dissolving) i just keep on trucking these days. i forgot that so recently my mental health was this bad.

Grass Toucher Georg@avengingfem.me

one way i can tell i have The Depression real real bad rn is that i’ve been daydreaming about this kind of thing for years and now that someone is building it (and i could probably also build my own following your example) i just absolutely cannot care. about this or anything else

lighting! it's so cool you can just buy cheap RGBW lightbulbs at ikea, install them in normal fixtures, and control them remotely individually from say, home assistant

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

autistic people can in fact learn social skills, including eye contact, small talk, and polite hedging/subtext doing activities like speech and theater is how I learned this. it's harder if you start when you're older but it absolutely is possible and it is not a thing autistic people "can't do."

technology is constrained by natural phenomena it relies on, and more advanced technology is more constrained than less advanced technology, such that flying a Concorde requires many more specific dependencies than flying a Sopwith Camel. magic has no consistent constraints.

was talking to my 8yo about what’s sci fi and what’s fantasy articulate the difference between technology and magic in one post. go

a consequence of this is that advanced practice of magic often looks like a wizard living alone in a tower with minimal contact with the outside world, while advanced practice of technology looks like enormous organizations with vast ranks of specialists all communicating with each other constantly.

the last time i posted this take i got all kinds of people on my ass telling me "no, advanced technology has fewer constraints and dependencies, what are you talking about, i just press a button alone in my bedroom" which just means you don't know about all the constraints and dependencies.

i think this is actually a seriously under-addressed issue, that increasing specialization makes job matching increasingly difficult, but as a society we don't really have any new institutions that compensate, so both jobseekers and openings just stay on the market ever longer.

If you are specialized in almost any capacity, the number of open jobs in the metro you live in at any one time is so small.

AI bucks some trends in technology by being *less* popular with 20-somethings, and I wonder how much of this is subtly about differences in perspectives about time. At 20, I felt like I had unlimited time. At 38, I feel like I certainly have a lot left but can't waste it.

"every person can have a well-constructed pair of shoes" is upstream of "it is no longer economically viable for every town to have a cobbler" and we are better for it

the amish are happy to let everyone else get on with our lives while they focus inwardly, but that's a consequence of their specific theology, not just something outsiders can impose. anti-AI crusaders have essentially the opposite theology which insists that everything is their business.

hikikomorphism@hikikomorphism.bsky.social

I genuinely do not think I am being uncharitable here, we let the amish get on with their lives in peace while not letting them set the pace for the rest of us, maybe that's the play here too

a family friend who's like a 70 year old mountain man ass trans dude who knows basically nothing about tech came to visit us today and was talking about using Claude. he loves Claude, but mostly in these insane long running chats where it gets kind of deranged. fresh chats are too boring he says.

he likes the personality that comes out when he just uses the same chat for everything for weeks at a time. very illuminating for me because i'm the opposite (new chats all the time, i do NOT want personality) and i didn't realize normies were figuring out how to get Fucked Up Claude.

And the more you want to make the code the best possible expression of your thinking, the more effort it takes! Readable, moduler, maintainable, well-tested, easy-to-understand code that clearly lays out your thinking requires clearer thinking and MORE TYPING than a mess of spaghetti.

i wanna hammer on this too: most of everything you touch exists because industrialization made it cheap; your couch is factory-slop, as any carpenter will gladly tell you. your phone as well if you call me stupid, you'll use industrial slop to do so, even aside from 'bsky uses llms'

jae (hallowed)@fubarchitect.com

"write it yourself" i don't want it that bad! it's worth having specifically because the idea came to me at a moment when i can pay a gpu-haver to summon it via text elemental. it's not "worth it" in-itself like most software you use, which was largely made for money, not intrinsic value

i'm trying to bootstrap this stuff in middle age because i didn't actually get them very well in college and then i transitioned anyway and then lost career time to health issues and i am seriously considering going back to school for a masters just for the environment.

jae (hallowed)@fubarchitect.com

if you decide not to do college, you have to bootstrap - a core professional knowledge base - proof thereof - a professional network - a sense of yourself as "good at" your field - habits for delivering work regularly college just hands you all that at the tail end of peak lifetime neuroplasticity

yes the conditions have to be right and you need to do the work, i don't really blame my dysphoric, depressed teenage self for fucking it up the first time. but even with the best of intentions, doing it on my own time feels *much* harder.
