"I get that you're mad about me harassing people but my friends all think it's fine so I don't know what your problem is."

So hard to pick a favorite part of this article. Pretending that sending unsolicited dick pics at 53 was a “youthful indiscretion” is good, but don’t sleep on the argument that his wife forgave him for subjecting other women to unwanted nude photos so everyone else should too

Pay god knows how much in tokens every month and you too can automate your most unhealthy impulses so they can be performed at scale.

I passed out last night because I was way more tired than I thought I was and didn't end up recommending Deming's *The New Economics* for @oxide.computer Books In The Box q.q. Although I am only on Chapter 3 so I dunno if that violates the Romero Rule.

I keep posting about AI because it is unfortunately something I'm having to deal with a lot of right now, but I think this is my favorite description of it.

And there's a part of me that can't help but be excited about that. Just... the people who are making things that might be weird and terrible, might be ugly AI slop... but are still TRYING to express something true and meaningful? A bit? It's like if MySpace was an environmental hazard.

There will never be a successful AI-generated theatrical feature. There might be a successful theatrical feature that USES AI GENERATION. If you think Everything Everywhere All At Once counts (which it arguably does?), this has already happened.

China’s first AI-generated theatrical feature has flopped, earning just $181,000 in its first weekend. By contrast, the scrappy ‘Niu Lai’ turned its crude animation into a viral attraction, grossing nearly $10 million a couple of months ago. www.cartoonbrew.com/box-office-r...

But at the same time having used this stuff for software development I know that a lot of people who don't have a lot of knowledge or experience are going to use the AI tools that actually do work to make a lot of weird and interesting slop things that are trying to sincerely express something?

I've said that I'm not NECESSARILY averse to AI generation... IF it's being used to do something artistically meaningful. We may then proceed to have a very long discussion of where exactly the line on THAT is but we can agree that anyone flooding the world with knockoff garbage doesn't cut it.

Like I'm fine with EEAAO's use of AI? So at the very least there is some level of AI use I have decided to be okay with I guess but I'm still struggling to quantify where I think the line is because there's a lot of AI use like this shit that I fucking hate.

I accepted fault because it was my fault and I should've been more careful but... yeah this isn't fun.

They're suing over permanent injuries. I do not know if they received permanent injuries. I hope they didn't. It's not that want them to be lying so they don't win money from us, I just hope they weren't debilitated by my mistske.

What are those words conservatives love so much? Oh yes: "take some responsibility."

The "Tumblr is the next PDF" executive is all about having AI raise her children? Shocker!

Even funnier is this anecdote is in the service of selling you A.I. For Girls

tbc she didn't say that, but she was the CEO of yahoo during that deal. And instituted stack ranking. She's ex-McKinsey too, so that's. Charming.

This is not to say that there are not moral, ethical, social, and political problems with AI: there are many. But because she has shielded herself from essentially all information on the subject, Bender is largely incapable of addressing these issues at anything beyond the most basic level.

She has, in other words, abandoned being a scientist so as to better preserve her own ego, leaving her divorced from reality and ineffective as a critic of AI. I wouldn't be quite so upset about this if I didn't see her using her credentials to ACTIVELY SPREAD MISINFORMATION all the time.

But this makes perfect sense because Emily Bender is not a scientist. Linguistics is a science, yes, but the goal of a scientist is to better understand reality. Bender has repeatedly demonstrated she has no interest in understanding reality.

She is religiously dedicated to maintaining ignorance of any and all LLM capabilities that might contradict statements she has made. Since she has stated in the past that LLMs HAVE to be useless, this means she has shielded herself from any information about LLMs' abilities to do literally anything.

We don't disregard all human opinions on the technical elements of writing just because word processors have spelling and grammer checking! If you have a flaw in your analysis, do you want more or less tools that might help you find it?

No wonder there are so many Insane Lisp Fans. Imagine you had Claude Code in 2006 and experimented with vibecoding but then Anthropic went out of business and everyone else was like "wow that's dumb whatever" for the next 20 years even as they started adopt, like, aider. You'd lose your mind!

Thoth@thoth.ptnote.dev

...but the flipside is that this kind of incredible capability to introspect, observe, and modify the program as it is running necessarily affects robustness. The system can enter invalid states because of hotpatch that got misapplied. Again, trading rigor for velocity. Very vibecoding-like.

(I don't think that that is a totally accurate analogy in terms of how things went down but I do think it explains the feelings Insane Lisp Fans often express)

So that's been fun. I should probably be writing code right now but honestly Posting Through It is kind of therapeutic.
