We, internationally, need to do exactly what the Brazilians did and lead by example with: 1) Block all far right figures/accounts 2) Never share a far right account even to dunk on them 3) Never reply to a far right account even to dunk on them Completely cut their algorithmic advantage

i don’t want “accelerated”, “increased-speed” or “fast-paced” research. in fact, am not interested in any shortcuts to mindful, intentional, and slow science

Sorry chatbot lovers but the waning of Boolean operators in most search functions on websites has made my life actively worse. You can't find anything, you can only have things suggested to you.

Why is it so weird that an expert in THING says THING is bad? Trust the expert. An assistant professor of Rare Diseases that is anti Rare Diseases? Yhea, no shit.

Wait, you're an assistant professor of AI but you're anti AI?

I haven't been following the light/dark toggle discussions, but my uninformed take is pretty simple: Stop Acting Like Design Decisions Have A Correct Answer (and then stop acting like the correct-answer machine is a real thing worth building)

Weird incident yesterday with self-proclaimed “AIs” joining an IndieWeb Homebrew Website Club meetup. They awkwardly edited the Etherpad, and apparently blanked/deleted chunks of content. The meeting hosts reacted quickly to change Etherpad and Zooms and not re-admit the aliases that had […]

Nobody ever explained to me what a passkey is or how they work. Websites just started asking me for passkeys like it's something we talked about.

I'm not saying we should abandon electrical technology, it's very good. But I will say I think we should return to mechanical means for many things. You do not need an app for your door lock. You do not need a smart fridge. You do not need a coffee machine with a camera. Bring back the mechanical.

Thinking about why women might not want to use a product that has forced itself into every software interface to confidently shout things that are wrong

blair@blairaf.com

One of the more misogynistic takes currently trending in the AI policy space is "women use less AI than men because they have less tech literacy" Ok but have you considered that women use less AI than men because we have more tech literacy?

I’m a climate scientist. Let me fix this headline. “Nearly a century ago, scientists showed that burning fossil fuels warms the planet. Today, we know human emissions account for over 100% of the warming. Yet dark money and disinformation still work to keep Americans addicted to fossil fuels.”
