The UK and Ukraine should accede together to the EU (UK squared if you will). It would be poetic.

This is the point; it’s crap to the point of indefensibility. I think the pessimists could be surprised the way this goes.

I know it’s dismissed, but if you take everything in the round, it’s very difficult to shake off the sense that everything is paused until something like an election happens (see investment summit, North Sea drilling, EU reset).

This got a bit drowned out last week, but this would suggest that something quite big is being discussed. “The prime minister is obviously ambitious. We are focused on the summit now…I think we are clearly talking about pretty big numbers in terms of the overall addition to GDP,”

Honestly her brain should be studied. Why is she incapable of going 'this nuts politician has said something nutty and vile?'

Surprised by how emotional I have found all the news. I knew Brexit bothered me, but it’s the first time I’ve felt hopeful since June 2016.

"THE ROAD BACK FROM BREXIT" @RachelSylvester.bsky.social for @ObserverUK.bsky.social Prime Minister Andy Burnham has astonished colleagues in Labour Party with a plan for the road back from Brexit, which The Observer says could prove a historic opening to Europe. #TheObserver #TomorrowsPapersToday

I’ve said this all along; there are plenty enough measures within EU law that the UK can use as ‘controls’. I think this can close down the least dogmatic opponents to FoM.

5. Majorities support measures permitted under EU law to manage free movement, such as requiring new arrivals to register and find work within three months, and limiting out-of-work benefits. Support is stronger where opportunities are reciprocal.

It does strike me for all the ink spilt wondering what Burnham might do, he’s actually pretty closely following what his and Steve Rotherham’s book said should be done.

A new mega poll by YouGov reveals that an overwhelming majority of constituencies want to rejoin the EU. Only 4 constituencies were not sure. It’s time to put EU membership on the table. https://bestforbritain.org/uk-membership-most-popular-eu-policy-in-all-uk-seats-bar-four-megapoll-finds/

I might be wildly wrong, but I do wonder whether this came out of nowhere or if there has been some kind of leader to leader conversation.

As I wrote in September 2024, there's probably only two realistic UK-EU models, the one we have possibly strengthened in a Swiss way if we accept free movement of workers, or membership. But how to work that into a political narrative? Tricky. ecipe.org/publications...

If you knew he was abhorant and dangerous but were perfectly happy to let Farage drum up the vote for Brexit because you thought it was the surest route to UK-EFTA or whatever dumb shit you convinced yourself would magically happen, I'm just not that interested in hearing from you in public life.

The only 4 constituencies where rejoining the EU wasn’t the preferred option were those of Lee Anderson, Farage, Tice and Lowe. In those 4, the top answer was ‘don’t know’. Confirming that Brexit has no real support at all. Not surprising for a total shitshow. And makes red lines seem very silly.
