Great animation illustrating the linking problem in planetary science! Remember there are *lots* of these moving objects in the images and we have to somehow match them all up across many observations across many years. Lots of hard work by planetary scientists to do this efficiently!

Meet our Solar System's newest dwarf planet candidate: 2026 ED138! Orbiting past Pluto, scientists found it in NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory data from earlier this year. Early analysis suggests it's ~600–1500 km across, one of the largest found past Neptune!🔭🧪 🔗: rubinobservatory.org/news/rubin-f...

My hope is that AI creates a Jevons paradox for human expertise. I.e. AI makes it so a human expert can supervise 100's of projects simultaneously. So it becomes cheap to have a human expert help with your problems. And people are willing to pay for that extra bit of assurance.

A recurring observation was the irony facing software engineers. Tech spent decades building software that automated other people's jobs into higher-intensity quotas. Now developers are seeing what that pressure looks like from the other side of the screen. #tech 3/4

I think it's vastly underrated how important org chart and team functionality is to building a good LLM. Over 18 months old, and still one of my favorite all time Interconnects posts. It's why we still often see orgs crumble and need to get rebuilt (e.g. Llama/xAI) & why underdogs can still catch up

Russia's attacks on Ukraine's energy system were crimes against humanity carried out as a state policy to deprive civilians of power and cause suffering, a UN commission reported on 26 October. The International Criminal Court had already issued warrants over the 2022–2023 strikes.

LLMs are increasingly used to judge whether AI-generated research ideas are novel. But are they any good at it? Our new eval reveals even frontier LLMs can reach different conclusions about similar ideas depending on how they're asked to evaluate them. 🧵 buff.ly/WjOSxcx

$72B of Anthropic’s $80B loss is a weird accounting issue and not actual dollars lost. They got an investment from Amazon but instead of getting the stock right away, Amazon will get it at IPO. Since then Anthropic is now valued at $1.5T to $2T and the value of stock they “owe” Amazon rose by $72B

I’m seeing people reacting by pointing out that he’s obviously wrong. I appreciate that, but it’s also a pointless exercise. The problem isn’t that he’s wrong. The problem is that this is normal in American politics — and it’s been normal for a while.

Disproving the Exponential Time Hypothesis does not mean P=NP, and it will not break modern cryptography. A big chunk of the discussion was spent swatting down instant panic and explaining why sub-exponential bounds do not magically collapse all NP problems. #security 1/4

While I agree that we need ways to reduce bundle size easily in apps and have good framework choices - we can do more, LLM's enable us to quickly refactor and migrate, let's do better than saving x% But... if this works for you and you can shave 40-70% of react, please do it!

Hungary's recent election was less free and more unfair than the upcoming US midterms, and pro-democracy forces still won. Similar point about Serbia's election this weekend. In normal democracy terms, America is in bad shape. But in consolidated authoritarianism terms, we're looking pretty good.
