In our course and book _Calling Bullshit_, we posit that If something seems too good, or too bad, to be true, it probably is. Now as a college professor I'm pretty confident that overreliance can AI can harm our thinking ability, but just ten minutes of use? Let's dig into this this study a bit.

I will not only be relieved but truly *ecstatic* to be wrong, if more and better studies soon start showing that AI actually improves learning and cognitive motivation. But so far they all show the opposite, and that is consistent with the evidence that I and other educators are seeing on the ground

I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

Last year it was ‘chatbots have been endorsing lots of people’s delusions and we didn’t notice.’ This year, its ’agents have been hacking lots of websites and we didn’t notice.’ Seems there’s a problem with controlling this technology and monitoring what it is doing.

#FAccT and other CS folks who care how your work is used to train LLMs - please let ACM know what you think!

We are opening a consultation on the inclusion of ACM publications within AI licensing agreements for access and training purposes. We have published this piece as to why we believe it is the right time now to enter into these discussions. buff.ly/VTatuda

Seriously, this article contains such amazing ridiculousness. What fresh hell is this: "They'll be able to say, 'Hey, I'm student number 1234,' and then the robot will be like, 'Hey, we were talking about this yesterday, do you want to continue that conversation?" nysfocus.com/2026/07/14/n...

This is who they're experimenting on: "Salamanca is the only incorporated city in the US located entirely within a Native American reservation. The school district serves ~1,300 students, including 32% who identify as American Indian or Alaska Native and 79% who are economically disadvantaged." 3/

And this is the company behind these robot teachers: "In April 2024, the company acquired Simulcra, the Las Vegas parent company behind RealDoll, which has spent decades creating hyperrealistic sex dolls and later expanded into sex robots that remain on the market today." 4/

Hire a real teacher with that $$! "The products cost the district $57,590, according to the contract attached to the school board agenda. Kiguel said the price was discounted; the company’s website lists the M-Series robot, the model purchased by the district, at a starting price of $95,000." 2/

In computer science, conferences aren't a nice-to-have; they are the primary venue for peer-reviewed publication. OMB's proposal to require pre-approval for conference attendance at grant-submission time is impractical: researchers don't know which conferences they'll submit to a priori. #TechPolicy
