Three days after the August primary, election workers in one Washington county went to check for late mail-in ballots. They expected no more than a few dozen. Instead, there were more than 500 — each a vote that wouldn’t count.

Once mass spam texts were made legal, younger donors vanished, leaving a grassroots fundraising machine that subsists on squeezing vulnerable seniors, some of whom give hundreds of times a day. It’s a horrific model. Consultants get generationally wealthy, and the party hollows out its future.

The research implies that a local newspaper creates $114 per resident per year ($84 in 2018$) in local government efficiency. A case for subsidies for local news, perhaps in the form of consumer free-subscription vouchers like @deanbaker13.bsky.social advocates

Justin Wolfers@justinwolfers.bsky.social

Lower accountability reads as higher risk. When a town's newspaper closes those local governments end up paying higher interest rates to borrow. https://newsletter.platypuseconomics.com/p/crony-capitalists-dont-want-reporters

I was deputy M.E. at the WSJ when Murdoch took over, with a similar “editorial independence board.” Within 4 months, our top editor was gone, replaced by a loyal Murdoch deputy. That board raised a quivering objection, but the deed was done. If the Ellisons own CNN, they’ll do whatever they want.
