trying to talk/think less about ai crap from now on, it's doing me no good and I could just spend time with my cats instead
today I watched Lanterns (fantastic show!) and redid all the player anims with the new char sprites, learning a lot by studying Mina sprites, they're so good!!!
Only a month left of my contract and I'm actually enjoying it (minus the guilt of being behind on a Wunder update)
But after Nov, I'll have enough runway to maybe get both Wunder and Scroll DX finished
Whilst AI is still making the world worse, I can't wait to make more stuff with my human hands!
If Wunder and Echo make any more money over the next year (hopefully they do 🤞), that'll just make it easier to survive / thrive, but I won't be depending on it!
Ideas are easy, you just think about the art / life you've engaged with prior, it's called creativity but that's all it is
Business people don't understand how that works because they don't understand art / life
genuinely "making games" is the best game I ever played, I was hooked as soon as I made an image change to a different image on a button press
my first game involved a stickman on a skateboard, he moved up and changed to a stickman doing an ollie when I held down the space button!
it was magic!
sorry, code is fucking beautiful. its fucking magical
i can type words in the thing and fucking TRIANGLES just appear ?
oops i typed it wrong and the triangles did something i didn't EXPECT ??
now weird shit is happening ??
this is the best shit of all time. i was born to fight the computer
just wanted to share something i discovered
the amount of games released in 2022 compared to this year has increased by 77%. I use 2022 because that marks the last year before AI really took over the internet
whats crazy to me is that the amount of games with ZERO REVIEWS has ALMOST TRIPLED. ZERO?
there are a lot of freaks in gamedev, who when given an industry standard method will go "no thanks" and start climbing a mountain
coding their own engine, sculpting it in clay, implementing ik from scratch, embroidering sprites, etc.
there's value in these journeys and games are better for them
Huge honor having Shack News stop by our office 24 hours before Mina's launch earlier this year. 😭
It's amazing having our thoughts documented like this for posterity. 🐭
Huge thanks to @davidlcraddock.bsky.social and @gregburke.bsky.social for so generously making this happen! 🙌
The question is not whether I should kick the puppy. The puppy is innevitably getting kicked. The question is whether I can kick the puppy in a sustainable, inclusive and empowered way. How can people be supported in kicking puppies for good? Let’s stop the puppy kick gatekeeping already.
It's so weird to see people say "I can't avoid all gen AI, so I guess I have to use it"
It's such an obviously disingenuous thing to say / think, I can't avoid popups or ads sometimes, I don't then go out of my way to get more popups and adverts. Just say you like ai you weirdo
I have witnessed this so strongly and so repeatedly!
it upsets me that I can't get 80k by saying exactly how and why my game is good, and showing them a game that is good. They always play it and then say "ye this is great... but we're going in a different direction"
We're in a very dumb time rn
A big goal for Vertical Slice is to amplify the voices of devs across the industry. Yes, we need to document major announcements, but it's also vital to scrutinise those marketing beats.
Case in point: The recent generative AI gubbins from Unity/Google.
Here's the dev view, and it ain't pretty.
you think this is like being a vampire? oh no i touched AI guess now i have to bend over
if everyone uses AI, then I'll make everyone's lives difficult, even if i slip up here and there
"I will not touch anything with ai-generated code" is going to mean, in pretty short order, "I will not touch software"
this is just functionally what software development is now and it's only going to accelerate from here
I'm sorry but it feels like the subtext of every "ai is inescapable folks just deal with it" post is "I'm getting the vibe that using Claude might be something people won't respect and like me for and I really need that to stop"
I find the argument that you soon won't be able to avoid genAI in games utterly unconvincing
it's predicated on the idea that genAI is, or will be, a shortcut to higher quality (rather than a form of corner cutting that remains present in the final product)
and it ignores why people make stuff
The last few years has really tried to embitter me; industry hollowing out, friends becoming ai-pilled and the internet warping into a place I no longer enjoy exploring...
but video games are cool, i love them and i want to spend my life making them. The human spirit is indomitable!
To mark being part of this great showcase, we've updated the demo with so much extra polish and improved visuals. Never a better time to check out the demo and the other punk games that are on show 🎉
We're so happy to be part of @punkgamedevs.bsky.social Punk Games Showcase!
With a newly updated demo, expect better visuals, balance and performance with full patch notes live on the steam page!

I don't think I'm exaggerating when I'm saying that me and my wife feel like the last survivors in a zombie apocalypse, seeing all close friends and family use this crap more and more.
Even a "I just asked ChatGPT what the best GPU for this game is" feels like that hidden zombie bitemark trope
I gave Braid an A+ back in my press days.
I spent 100s of hours working on The Witness at PlayStation, fighting for it, getting it into conferences, and being Jon's personal wrangler. I even coined "Metroidbrainia" after it.
I will not be buying Order of the Sinking Star, and neither should you.
FYI for any #playdate heads in chat: i help moderate a dev-oriented, no-AI playdate discord server — it opened its doors quite recently, but has already blossomed to over 100 members, which makes my heart happy!
🪶 if you make playdate games yourself, why not come along? discord.gg/SXtWeXrdwg
I loved Battalion Wars growing up and it still lives rent free in my head, so I figured I'd take another one of its designs and explore its art style and push the shape language even further.

one thing you learn from making a lot of things is that the nitty gritty details, the millions of tiny invisible decisions, ARE the art. The "higher level ideas" are not nearly as important or interesting
"AI lets you focus on the higher level ideas!!"
because we all grew up dreaming of becoming managers and CEOs
we all know the real artists at the very highest level are the shareholders, famously full of amazing ideas
This is the weirdest consequence of this doomed tech for me. I just don't engage with things that were previously light entertainment.
Losing light entertainment has had a deeper effect than I expected, I'm working on it but it's made me bitter
Big same. I spent 10 minutes this morning trying to decide if I could laugh at a bird video
A BIRD. VIDEO.
(it was almost certainly AI and I felt bad for feeling anything at the simulacra because it just cheapens actual bird hijinks 😭)
genAI discourse drives me nuts
“putting aside that the tech needs to steal from every artist with an explicit goal of competing with and devaluing them, I think using it speeds up my programming!”
back up, chucklefuck, what was that first bit again?
while I do believe people can genuinely seek atonement and change, it must be stressed that the path forward for victims is often far less linear. healing from trauma is often spiral-shaped and hellish, and condemning someone to walk that path is a deeply horrific act. we must never forget that.
i think a big AI hang-up i don't see people talk about is simply that i don't want to talk to a computer ever
even if there was somehow a completely ethical and environmentally friendly version of it: i don't want to talk to a computer
Something about video games, that is true for all art, is that people dedicate their life to create stuff whether there is any way to earn money from it or not.
People's motivations are very varied. But the side that makes us create something unique just because it's good will always remain in us.
Today is the one-year anniversary of the release of Unfair Flips!!!
The game is not on sale today because I forgot. But also it's $1.99 anyways so a sale is mostly in the mind

"i miss when games felt like art" - guy who keeps playing the most sloppy number go up horseshit balatro skinner box rat cage survivors games possible so he can have stimulation while listening to a podcast
residuals for devs really special in that it’s kinda the single issue you can spotlight that basically chain combos into every other shitty labor issue in gamedev
why shouldn’t we get residuals?
That's cool. I'm sure all the BitReactor devs that were furloughed weeks before launch are gonna see some of that $50 million... right?
Residuals are standard in other creative industries. If the people who actually made the game got their share of the profits, we wouldn't be in this mess.
Star Wars Zero Company is estimated to have sold 1 million copies, with the majority of those sales coming from Steam, which Alinea Analytics' Rhys Elliott estimates has generated around $50 million since last month’s launch. https://bit.ly/4xKTiku
