Proud to announce the next game Vampirium: 1997 Dracula is king of the United British Empire. Kill his enemies and find your own path through a minimalist immersive sim sandbox. Wishlists and retweets massively appreciated (and, you know, massively helpful) store.steampowered.com/app/4035190/...

Watching this thing suggests all over again that AI-generated art's central failing continues to be that the kinds of people who might use AI tools to make something interesting are the kinds of people who hate the supposed shortcut of using AI tools because they enjoy the work of making art.

It's funny how the Defenders of Western Civilization really want Odysseus to be this heroic patriarchal figure when he is canonically kind of a dirtbag.

Mass Effect was my ultimate white whale, my all-time dream project. For the last couple years I'd been in discussion w/ BioWare & EA to take on the project & as part of that I wrote close to 20 minutes of music to explore where the franchise can go next, may as well share it!

Well this is shitty. As with all of these, complaining that I don’t get to play a game feels childish and disrespectful to the many people who are getting fucked over here. But I also did really wanna play this game. I’d assume my current project indicates my love of this subject and genre.

I think Americans often misunderstand, or simply do not know, how good European laws can get. Especially labor laws.

Jason Schreier@jasonschreier.bsky.social

One important piece of context that many people might not realize: Shutting down a game studio is expensive. Shutting down a French game studio — thanks to labor laws requiring an extended severance period — is VERY expensive. Xbox doesn't want to take on those costs.

As someone with a lot of respect for a lot of the individuals I know are likely trying to work this shit out within valve, I’m intrigued to see what they come up with.

Aftermath@aftermath.site

Devs shouldn't have to be protecting their games, Valve should be protecting its shopfront: aftermath.site/steam-indie-ga...

Culturally, there’s a belief in meritocracy over there, and to an extent the platform is built around that belief. I dunno how you handle the conflict and straight up paradoxes of that world view as the meritless charlatans roll into town.

Fuck, and indeed, yeah.

LAIKA’s ‘Wildwood’ is tracking a $15-20M domestic box office debut after a skyrocket of pre-sale tickets. This will potentially make LAIKA’s biggest opening weekend ever. (Source: @GlobalBoxOffice on X)

Very much at the point with Vampirium: 1997 where I’m simultaneously grateful to mike of the past for setting up so much modularity that I can add good mechanics in a matter of hours, and very angry at him for where he left a refactorable mess I know I’ll need to get to some time. Interlinked.

I love that aspect of development, the relationship you feel with a year of choices. The way you express yourself and have done historically, and the manner in which I can see myself learning and growing by counting the rings in the bark. I like wearing in my code like a good pair of shoes.

Vampirium: 1997 isn’t in next fest, but while you’re in a wishlisting mood, I’d really appreciate you adding us too. Makes a big difference and helps us position ourselves better down the road :) Also I added pyromancy today. So that’s fun. store.steampowered.com/app/4035190/...

Criminally under rated film

Movie recommendation for tonight, Underwater Kristen Stewart stars in this sci-fi/horror set in an underwater mining facility, and that's all I'm going to say about it because I just watched this one night without knowing a thing about it, which was definitely the ideal viewing circumstance!

We've been squishing bugs and making quality of life improvements to Vampirium: 1997 🧛 Here's a handful of the updates we've been working on!

Next Fest was already a bit of a pointless exercise for 90% of devs. Now the AI slop has made it entirely pointless for 99% of devs I don’t really know what Valve can do about this, but I think it’s fair to say that we pay them well enough, that it would be nice if they’d bloody do *something*

I would read the hell out of an article collating historic quotes about the inevitability of NFTs and the metaverse from the current crop of LLM-poisoned boosters. Important context.

Better start implementing those smart contracts if you don't wanna get left behind, chumps 😎 /s

Added strangulation to Vampirium today. Any appropriate item can be used, of course if you want to do it to a vampire you’ll need to source something silver. Game development is fun and also creates an interesting search history.

I definitely went in with a similar ‘oh, are the racists gonna be a bit racist?!’ cynicism, but my god. It’s the way it trickles sideways too, the homophobia and misogyny. Loser ideologies stacking on top of each other. The most pathetic men from every town, gathered to wear suits and talk bollocks

it feels weird to even be surprised by the shit coming out of Reform at this point but the stuff in this ITV documentary is genuinely fucking repugnant. I'm not even all the way done but these people keep saying stuff that makes me feel like I need to pause and take a break before I can move on.

Quite enjoying hearing the undercover reporter absolutely weaponise mansplaining though. Amazing questions and aww shucks explain the world to me you big strong man who definitely doesn’t smell like a knackered chip shop.

My only solution to the current moment is to get on with it and try to make a good videogame. Admittedly, that is my solution to almost every situation, so shouldn’t be taken as advice.

That thing has ‘will be used exclusively in a universal studios show that will briefly replace waterworld but be cancelled a year in for bad attendance’ written all over it. Yes I’d go.

hoots@hoots.bsky.social

Is this a safe space to confess I think the flying car is hilarious? You couldn't pay me to get in that thing, but I'd 100% pay to see it at a monster truck rally.

Yo. @kenney.nl has done more to support up and coming devs, empower non artists and people starting out with accessible tech than any other single person I’ve encountered. Just wanted to throw that out there for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

Matchbox is a very dumb movie, but it is at least a movie that knows it’s dumb, and has respect for me, the dumb guy who decided to watch Matchbox, dumbly.

(I’m really sick, so this is entertaining me at exactly the level I need right now. They keep saying the word ‘matchbox’ and one character’s affectation is she fidgets with a matchbox)

It was bound to happen eventually, I popped onto the Play Watch Listen podcast to talk about stop motion animation + what a puppet hospital even is. Recorded after the Wildwood wrap party, I’d just about got my voice back. Watch me sip a lot of water & play with cute dogs. Mainly in it for the dogs.

Play Watch Listen@playwatchlisten.bsky.social

Here's to 190 episodes of Play, Watch, Listen! We recorded IN THE SAME ROOM(!!!), and with stop-motion puppet "doctor" Kerry Dyer. @alanahpearce.bsky.social @mikebithell.bsky.social @awintory.bsky.social youtu.be/lMCb3zEZX2Y?...

While this is indeed a bit scary, it is at least encouraging that growth in releases that actually pull an audience is much slower. Given how much Steam prioritises visibility based on interest, the impact of the slop seems.. limited for now

the funniest thing about galactic racer is how critical it's narrative elements are to how fucking hard it hits. It might not seem seem like fzero needed narrative elements, but galactic racer objectively proves how important they are to your game hitting like an atom bomb.

So is the epic stuff a pr pivot? Like they’re finding a point of difference with valve’s ’we think ai should be labelled’ stance by leaning heavily into genAI posturing? Or is this true believer Tim stuff?

‘I can fall off a building faster than Usain Bolt can run’

Chet Faliszek@chetsucks.com

This still is the funniest part of the Epic announcement... ignoring the jab at gabe but comparing their feature light early project as loading faster than steam! Tim might have wanted to keep some engineers around that could explain why this comparison isn't the big stab they should lead with...

Oh, they’re a genius and a lovely person who will bring light into your life

IntangibleMatter@intangiblematter.net

What if they explain it with lots of "ooh! And there's also this thing, and then this thing, and oh! Also! There's this..."

The easiest way to figure out if someone is knowledgeable on a topic is to ask them to explain it to you. If the answer is verbose, filled with colourful words of foreign speciality and annecdotes, they’re not. If they explain it like an exasperated but kind primary school teacher, they’re a genius.
