Introducing the concept of “losing” to my 3yo. We gifted her a game today which involves more than 1 player and we just had to deal a lot with feelings of disappointment and loss. We know it’s something we have to teach but to watch it being learned from the beginning is so eye opening

Went on X for a bit. I feel like I’m more attuned to AI stuff but not in a positive way. I come back to bsky and I feel like I’m less on the cutting edge but somehow feels more human and peaceful here.

I feel seen

i never make plans i hate looking at markdown i don't wanna read markdown files i just plan by having it make changes to the code then i look at the code to see what sucks then i prompt again

I miss hand coding sometimes. Having 5 open tasks and constantly context switching and making high level decisions is exhausting. Need a min to just sit and make tiny satisfying decisions :/

I also don’t understand the American obsession with SUVs. Like why? I am resisting so hard but my wife is also leaning toward it. And all our friends are on her side lol. I just don’t get it.

22, not yet finished with school, buys a new car, puts herself 80k in debt. 32, lives in Grand Rapids, works in *Saginaw*, has no reliable transportation & relies on Uber. I'd be more impressed with this article if they hadn't found absolutely gonzo examples of how Americans are struggling

😂

there's so much bro-economics going on right now "if the company doesn't use ai then they'll be less productive than their competitors and so they'll die" yeah imma go crush exxon mobil with the clanker crew and my 3 second attention span

These are my dad goals

Was struggling to find my own words for this (still am). Coworker used binary language to define ai acceptance and I was uncomfortable with saying I’m very enthusiastic but also uncomfortable with saying I don’t believe it’s useful

I don't like the framing of skeptic vs enthusiast. More and more people understand that it's capable (the degree to which varies), but the framing diminishes the very real concerns around all the other harmful consequences of the technology.

I am pro Iranian people. I stand with them against their own government’s repression AND against the imperial violence in the form of bombs dropped from the sky from Israel & the US who have already killed hundreds. I support neither imperialism or dictatorship. Sahar Delijani said it best:

I don't think LLMs make work easier. They make work faster, and that is "better" for companies and give workers an approximation of ease bc of the apparent lack of labour. You're still accountable for the output, which makes you a details reviewer, which I often find harder w/o the original labour.

How do you make sure snippets in docs are tested? Or do you avoid putting snippets in docs and just point to full samples?

This is insane.

Today, the Trump administration repealed the endangerment finding: the ruling that served as the basis for limits on tailpipe emissions and power plant rules. Without it, we’ll be less safe, less healthy and less able to fight climate change—all so the fossil fuel industry can make even more money.

In theory, family visiting after the birth of a baby is helpful. It should give us time and space to focus on the baby. But sometimes family visiting can add way more burden to the already hectic initial few weeks.

I feel like a lot of people think about time wrong. Been bugging me since I talked about side projects the other day and was complaining about it. I had to remind myself that at no point in my adult life has time been given to me, or materialised out of nowhere. You have to actively create time.

We use the #huckleberry app for tracking feeds, diapers, sleep etc. It’s one of the most well thought out apps I have ever used. Every bit of it is so intuitive.

Yeah plan mode only really works if you have a very clear idea of what you’re building. For small features of minor additions this is easy. For complex stuff I still prefer the “don’t code just talk” prompt to weigh my options and iteratively build out what I want.

dax@thdxr.com

started work on something complicated - instinct is to go write some code and think through it let me try it differently and use the LLM to create a plan first it just doesn't work when i don't really know what we need to build thinking through by typing is still important

First time setting up #nbgv versioning system for our libraries (dotnet, ts, and py). Once you get it, it really is very simple.

More of this non- zero sum game thinking

Once, my friend asked me if by teaching others I'm not creating competition for myself. I get where he was coming from, but that's not how I see it. We aren't in a race, we are in a life-long hackathon. If someone levels up, everyone wins. And I win, too.

the flip side of getting ai to write your unit tests is you basically never look at your tests, and if you do, you'll notice that 50% of the tests aren't actually needed

pretty wild statement re: Republican Chris Madel drop from race for MN governor: "Saying he cannot support the national GOP's 'stated retribution on citizens of our state, nor can I count myself a member of a party that would do so."

The Washington Post published a clear video of federal agents removing Alex Pretti's handgun moments before he was fatally shot. There's nothing in the video to suggest Pretti even reached for his weapon. wapo.st/49Zqv1L

i think this attitude — that all opposition is illegitimate and nothing we do can be questioned— is probably pervasive in the white house and helps explain why they keep making terrible political choices

Jan-Werner Mueller@jwmueller-pu.bsky.social

Putin pioneered this. No opposition is legitimate. Regular, decent, “ordinary” people cannot possibly be against us because only we represent “the real people.” Tell-tale sign of authoritarianism.

The past few days have confirmed for me something I’ve long believed: the American political system is terminally fucked, but the American people are not. Most Americans want to live in a democracy in which everyone has a decent life—the fascists in this regime represent a dying minority.

An insane, perfect encapsulation of it all: The same day Trump’s agents kill a Veterans Affairs ICU nurse in broad daylight, the CEOs of Apple and Amazon join Trump to watch a private screening of a film about his wife directed by an alleged sexual abuser who was seen shirtless in the Epstein Files
