hockeystick moments are the biggest opportunity of your career. It's exciting and kinda scary. Everything changes! I wrote Scaling Fast: Software Engineering Through the Hockeystick as your guide. 16 years of startup experience condensed into 240 pages scalingfastbook.com

Agent this agents that and it's all just Domain Driven Development same as it always has been. Guess what, agents write better code faster using less tokens when your words map directly to objects. AND you continue to understand the system even if you don't read every line

Building a habit of saying "This is a distraction" after sharing dumb exciting ideas with the team. Wish me luck

So weird thing about being manager – if you're bad at focus your team is bad at focus How do I get better at focus when claude and friends make it so easy to start a bunch of things in parallel?

Building outcome-focused engineering teams sounds easy in a book but in practice you’re saying “Ok so what does all that mean for the user?” over and over until you retire if you’re lucky others start saying it for you

You could clean house right now by reposting software engineering lessons from the 80's but add "agentic" to the title 🤔

Amazing stuff. We've been using Start in production for 2 years. Love

Sometimes management is just giving people the exact next step so they stop overthinking doesn't matter if the step is wrong, they'll figure it out, you're giving them the freedom to get to work by implicitly taking any heat for outcomes

Huge shoutout to late-20’s Swizec for getting into personal finance and setting up a bunch of stuff. San Francisco daycare rates are absolutely murderous but we’ll be fine. Probably.

Had our first UX roast sesh with the team. Why did nobody tell me how awesome these are? Great way to review features at a high level that you can’t get into in PRs

oh neat! when did apple's fake bokeh become smart enough to sharpen everything at the correct focal distance even if not part of the primary subject?

This is going to be my first design system migration where we hit 100% old code deleted Completely unimaginable a few years ago.

I like that agents ended the MPA vs SPA debate. You need an API for tools, might as well use it in your UI

Disgustingly hot today for long runs had to take a shortcut back home. Still not feeling back in shape, legit made me feel nauseous after

you feel young and then the optometrist hits you with the “it might be time for a reading prescription”

the hard parts of building a business are - solving a real problem for real people - ignoring shiny ideas that are fun but distracting - prioritizing boring stuff that moves the needle - connecting with customers if anything, AI makes it *harder* to build a successful business

Actually going super well. Letting agents rip on a huge design system migration has improved our codebase in measurable ways. fewer typescript error better react doctor scores more readable composition improved file structure fantastic UX

fuck I'm gonna spend the next week reviewing this crap aren't I

This morning Astra built me a silly little game and now Jev can play it for me while I watch TV. I love living in the future 🤩

People keep asking what’s my trick to save on tokens Secretly there is no AI in these systems, just code. I use AI to generate the code and let it run for a few seconds on cheap compute We could’ve done all this 6 years ago but it wasn’t easy enough to build

Use LLMs to run prototype workloads and iterate, turn the rules into real code when it’s time to scale model providers hate this trick

One of the hardest leadership things is when you have an idea or solution but people don’t see the vision yet. Then 3 weeks later they arrive at the same conclusion and are excited that they figured it out. You then have to applaud and encourage them.

Maybe Plasmidsaurus broke my brain (biotech) but I increasingly think of coding systems in a biology metaphor - running system - agents make changes - agents validate - agents find problems - agents patch things - ship all the time - feels random but keeps working agents may be human or not

Went for a test drive in a Rivian R2 and it’s definitely a driving appliance. I wants it and it accelerates fast enough to upset the missus 😈
