I feel like a lot of people think about time wrong. Been bugging me since I talked about side projects the other day and was complaining about it. I had to remind myself that at no point in my adult life has time been given to me, or materialised out of nowhere. You have to actively create time.

(Talking to myself here) If you want to ship some side project, it is on you to create the time for that to happen in. Similarly, new productivity tools don’t mean more time is going to become available. Never has, never will. The world will find more work for you. That’s the way gravity pulls.

You have to resist that pull and invest energy into making sure you have the time to do the things you want to do. So I annoyed myself when I said “I don’t have time” because it’s not true. I didn’t make the time. Me. Through my decisions. I should have said “I haven’t made the time yet.”

Sorry if you weren't looking for a reply here, but I've found this to be only partially true self-talk that puts a lot of pressure on oneself. If people were to do an honest time audit, my guess is that most of them would find that they're oversubscribed, even by the non-negotiable parts of life.

Especially if they took their energy levels into account. Work, Kids, Food, Friends, Relationships, Health, Sleep, Admin, Overhead will very quickly fill up the 168 hours we have in any given week, and achieving any extra-curriculars will only be possible if we are able to make these negotiable.

had to go through the process of realizing this the last few years, helped immensely to realize i can just plan things and then do them or just do things when i want and then do other things later

Knowing that you’re allowed to say no helped me a lot. I’ve applied this liberally in my current role. I’m focusing on one thing at a time and doing the best job of it that I can. Lots of distracting stuff comes up, often disguised as opportunity, but I’m staying strong.
