Come for over two hours of really bad awards show programming (HOW IS THIS STILL GOING), stay to watch an award given to a Louisville Cardinal.

The Ballon d'Or ceremony:

Surprisingly, nobody asked Laporta if he would twerk.

Alexander Abnos@anabnos.com

Joan Laporta answered a question about the importance of winning the women's Champions League with an answer about wanting to win the men's Champions League and La Liga...while accepting the award for best women's club.

women's sports thrive when you say loud and proud "this is a premier sports product, not a sideshow or a lesser version of the men's game" it's hard to sell that when you put the WNBA game before the NBA game like they're the JV team

big failure from the NBA to not get two of its teams to move one (1) regular season game. the NBA owns 42% of the WNBA (functionally more, since a lot of NBA owners own teams) and should be invested in wanting the league to grow, even at minor expense to its more popular product

"seismic" is right. This student-led movement started after a building collapse almost exactly two years ago. They kept protesting and organizing, built a political party from scratch, and just blew past projections for their electoral success. www.theguardian.com/world/2026/o...

Still waiting to see why everyone assumes this Inter Miami group can just flip the switch and dominate like it’s 2024/2025. Putrid stuff on the ball without Messi, and even he can’t carry a team that’s this wasteful.

I can’t stress enough if you aren’t watching: this game should be 5-0 if not for some really wasteful shooting by New York and a couple saves by Dayne St. Clair. Jorge Ruvalcaba isn’t an elite gamebreaker but he’s constantly getting into clear shooting spots; just isn’t taking those earned looks.

Game, Bulls. There were dozens, hundreds, of hirable coaches who could’ve taken over for Mascherano and gotten Miami back on track while accounting for their weaknesses. Instead, they’ve got Kily González.

I read a good article in The Guardian today. It was Xabi Alonso talking about how Chelsea no longer get daft red cards and how Penders is the new Courtois.

Honestly in awe of Chelsea's ability to find a volume of Premier League level goalkeepers, but always selling/loaning out the good ones and sticking with absolute wildcards.

Not sure Chelsea can pin this on the Palmer send-off. Right side of defense made Mathys Tel look like prime Thierry Henry there. Midfield happy to watch. Suspect they'll be just fine by Boxing Day, but they've hosted the best Spurs performance in ages. Crowd shots worth a thousand words.

If you bought an MLS club right before the league got Lionel Messi, the Apple deal and a domestic World Cup you would have been better off putting that money in an index fund

Tyler Adams loves baiting opponents into mistakes, but this is his lowest-effort success yet.

Mike Maignan sees red for shoving Tyler Adams in the face 😳 Marcus Tavernier steps up and converts the penalty for the Cherries 🍒

And Tyler Adams promptly baits Mike Maignan into earning the dumbest red card, taking a two-hand shove to his face before a corner kick. Not sure anybody on Milan has made much impact beyond the penalized goalkeeper. A doozy for Ruben.

I talked to Frantzdy Pierrot after Haiti's match against Scotland and asked him about the atmosphere, seeing that he played high school soccer locally and completely forgot about how they had to travel throughout qualifying.

A fascinating what-if, since the XAM received from LAFC helped Minnesota trade for Ike Opara in the following window. Opara’s career teems with its own what-ifs. But the Loons had at least three clear chances to bring Ramirez back after 2018, and alternatives have seldom matched his output.

Matthew Doyle@mattdoyle.bsky.social

One of the great "what-ifs" of the past decade is "what if Minnesota United just kept one of the best pure goalscorers in league history, played him 2500 minutes a year and just built out the team behind him?"
