The thing you're missing is that MAHA is not at all interested in real problems. They focus on vaccines and ignore Big Pharma's criminal marketing of opioids. They freak out about fluoride and ignore PFAS which are a real carcinogen. So reframing for legitimate concerns will not work

I’ve never met any MAHA supporter who wasn’t an antivaxxer. Just look at the 21 members of the IACC that RFK added. ALL antivaxxers as far as I can tell. (3 of them have been in my home) How does the author explain that?

MAHA talks about pollutants while the Trump administration destroys the EPA, rolls back regs, and limits enforcement. MAHA has done jack to bring down the cost of healthcare. Craig Spencer is clueless.

MAHA is furious that all the good things RFK promised to do about toxins and food have not been done because they conflict with Trump's let businesses do anything they want agenda. But Craig thinks we should embrace that.

Exactly. Maha wants chemicals out of food, no ultra processed foods & no vapes. but maha & their goals are irrelevant when a corp can pay off 🍊 🤡 to get their flavored vapes on the market with no regs & sideline the epa & other agencies keeping us safe.

Oh yes, collaborate with the people who are trying to destroy medical science. Great idea, Dr. Spencer. You have just affirmed the decision I made a few weeks ago to cancel The Atlantic, with this inance both sideserism crap.

"A lot of people in public health believe that MAHA is "nothing more than subversive anti-vaccine, anti-science syndicate." That is because MAHA is nothing more than a subversive anti-vaccine, anti-science syndicate.

What is wrong with you? I used to proudly subscribe and this absolute garbage is one more reminder why not. MAHA is an anti-vaccine and anti-science grift and if you want to pretend it is anything else then you’ve long past left journalism to be courtiers of the oligarchs.

This: “There are fights that are strongly supported by *both sides* … air quality in neighborhoods sharing zip codes with industrial facilities, lead and toxins in the water kids are drinking, and the poor quality of the food Americans eat and its clear negative impact …” Is absolute horseshit.

When I went away to college years ago one of the gifts my Mom got me was my own subscription to the Atlantic so we could talk about things written by writers like James Fallows and William Langewiesche over the phone, and I have to tell you I canceled that shit because of pieces like this

This is like “at least the trains in Italy run on time” logic in support of Mussolini. When only 4% of the lunatics in MAHA can dictate it focus on anti vax, you lose me. If the majority support the other worthy issues, then focus on that, instead I feel like they are trying to kill us!

The whole article boils down to, "Rubes are tied of hearing experts give them complicated explanations. MAHA offers easy-to-understand answers like snake oil and raw milk."

When it comes to covering science, medicine, and health, _The Atlantic_ has consistently been a joke. But not a funny joke. A cesspool that consistently and recklessly endangers the citizens of the United States. You ought to be ashamed. I am glad to have given up my subscription years ago.

Fascinating - the author proposes that professional medical associations refuse any funding from, say, vaccine manufacturers. He’s not necessarily wrong, but who should step in as the funders instead? Raw milk farms? Coffee enema suppliers?

Yeah its almost like something you could solve with... i don't know some kind of collective funding effort? protected from political interference... Nobody's cancelled anything like that lately have they?

MAHA has power (for now), so empire-builders are jumping in to trade normalization for a piece of the action. That's standard institutional medical politics! Team anti-vax and team anti-PPE are rivals inside the same country club. They don't differ on principles - they just bet on different horses.

Anyone else notice Collateral Global (GBD successor org) has scrubbed Bhattacharya (GBD author) and Bardosh (CG Director, funded by the Conly-Heneghan "EVIDENCE Collaborative") off their site? Burying COIs to make it easier for Bhattacharya to funnel money stripped out of the NIH budget to them?

They’re concerned with environmental pollution and government crony capitalism. OK. They supported the candidate who dramatically expanded both problems, and they still support him. So, in fact, they’re less concerned about both problems than the median person.

The MAHA Administration has: -allowed coal plants to spew toxic methylmercury -worsened climate change -dismantled public health & driven up sickness/death from infections -rolled back food safety -cut funding to Gavi, which will lead to an estimated 600,000 child deaths Why must I respect MAHA?

If maha is about gutting science and research, preaching discredited anti vax spew, and going after people like anthony fauci, help me see the upside that is worth all the downside? Help me understand why it's good to have the inmates run the asylum.

5,000 years of advancing science and the understanding of human biology vs "No! Now send me money to help spread the word." There are plenty of opportunities to suffer fools, we'll pass. And save lives, thank you very much.

"The movement is directly and indirectly responsible for killing and sickening countless people, so clearly the public health industry must embrace them" Fixed it for you.

The title nearly lit my hair on fire, After reading the article I agree with the opinion. This is not a defense of the unethical "leadership of RFJ Jr or Dr Oz, he levels justified criticism of them. It is correct in that there are legitimate criticisms of the Healthcare, Pharma & Industrial sectors

There is an opportunity to be exploited in addressing many root MAHA concerns that are currently being exploited by the worst among us. How to convince the confused & suffering to trust in government & healthcare institutions after this lot of miscreants are defeated is a legitimate question.

Which oligarch, who sells supplements, which are not regulated by the FDA, paid “The Atlantic” to write this sewer/ trash article? You will spend eternity in hell being sold shit that you know is shit , but you have to hear the pitches for the shit…..goddamn.

What concerns me is that MAHA's explicit opposition to pesticides in agriculture and chemicals in our food, yet RFK does nothing about the Trump administration's dismantling of environmental and workplace safety protections that undermine public health.

MAHA is a movement of grifters with nothing to offer. There are no true beliefs supporting their eugenic principles. Yes, America needs to be healthier, but we need to build a healthier society to do that, and conservatives are incapable of building anything for social good

Um, no. Can’t have a movement full of dogshit ideology that’s getting implemented, causing numerous negative adverse events in public health, only to see that they may have one non-totally-batshit crazy thought, but still a little weird, and proclaim “See, they have that!”…what’s wrong with you?
