New "quick" insect doodle: a shore bug, Saldula sp. It's drawn from a specimen photo, which is why it only has 3 legs... #entomology

Help! A job posting just came up for a position that I'm pretty sure I'd enjoy doing AND would do well, but the application questions are almost impossible for me to answer because of the specific activities they want me to talk about that I've never actually done.

It's not that I lack total confidence in my skills (maybe a little), but that my skills and experience are so unfocused. And maybe that's not a terrible thing, but a dominant part of my brain refuses to let me give a very general answer to a very specific question.

And also note that this job is SUPERVISING the folks that do the very specific stuff in question. I've been working on developing the leadership/supervising side of things for years now.

Make no mistake, I WILL apply and will do my damndest to submit a good application, but I really don't know what that's going to look like or how I can pull it out of my ass.

It's a weird feeling when the unicorn job you've been imagining for years suddenly appears, but you see what's asked of you and realize you're not a unicorn but an elderly old donkey with a paper cone taped to his forehead.

I don't have an area of expertise or a taxonomic group that I'm an authority on; I dive into learning about and IDing anything I can get my grubby hands on. I've never discovered any new species or developed any diagnostic tools, because that's not my job and my hobbyist resources are limited.

None of these things are truly required for the job in question, but they ARE explicitly parts of questions I must answer to apply, and I've got nothing to say in response that doesn't sound like a weird kid going "I LIKE BUGS!". Which isn't THAT far from the truth, but still.

It's an entomology position in a classification for which I'm on the eligibility list in good standing, but the app questions ask for formal experience in things that I only have informally. It's the old "yes, I'm an entomologist but I haven't WORKED as one except as an obsessive hobbyist."

What's getting under my skin is the knowledge that the big thing that would actually be likely to scuttle my attempt at the job would be outside verification that I'm not a "real" entomologist. Yes, I have a fancy piece of paper that says I am one. I've never WORKED as one, or published ANYTHING.

A very selfish reason I hope the U.S. sees a massive blue wave in the upcoming election is that MAYBE I'll see slightly fewer posts referring to a country of over 300 million people as if we're a monoculture composed of stinking coils of brain-dead dog shit.

The double-shot of flu and COViD vaccines kicked my ass yesterday. Felt a bit better today, so I did some chores, got groceries, and made sure my insect collection drawers were protected against carpet beetles for another few months. Productivity!

A good demonstration of how absurdly small insects can get. I was looking at a relatively small (2.5 mm) pteromalid wasp and noticed something stuck to its wing. It was an even smaller wasp.

I should probably be drawing something, or playing WoW, or pinning/photographing some insects, but depression has its claws in my brain tonight so I think I'll just play some TV episodes and start the 4-hour process of falling asleep.

"Programming is hard, I have to use AI!" I learned to program in 6502 assembly language on a Commodore 64 WITHOUT an assembler using nothing but PEEKs and POKEs when I was 13, don't give me that crappy excuse.

I was going to post the C64 assembler for printing "FUCK AI" but can't be bothered to look up the hex PETSCII codes (since Commodore used modified ASCII), so imagine a bunch of lines of "LDA #$45 JSR $FFD2" code.

Take a look at this tiny beetle, one of my last black light collections of the year! #entomology

I really wish I could just fall asleep instead of spending 3-4 hours each night in absolute misery until my body and brain give up out of sheer exhaustion and finally lapse into fitful slumber. I dread the end of each evening because I know I'm going to go through hell every night.

Reposting because I like these photos.

Some recent interesting insects from the backyard: Bembidion sp., Lebia viridis, and Aristotelia roseosuffusella. #Entomology #Bugsky

Any good entomologists (good = better than me, which is a pretty easy bar to surmount) want to go through a couple of drawers of bees and flies and tell me what the hell they are? Because I sure can't figure most of them out!

The funny thing about dermestids (carpet beetles) is that while they're household pests and the absolute bane of an entomologist's collection, I can never totally eliminate them because they occur naturally in my back yard. They seem to love hanging out on my native Ceanothus shrubs!

I also put my black light collecting setup away for the season. It's probably warm enough to use it for a few more weeks, but I have a massive curation and photography backlog and I found a dermestid-eaten specimen a few days ago so I can't just leave things sitting out any more.

I got a massive amount of yard and house work done today, so now I'll reward myself by... well, actually, I don't know how to reward myself so maybe I should do some more work.

I see we're having a debate about whether it's okay to go back to "X," the site owned by a trillionaire fascist who is currently bankrolling the GOP's midterm, throttled Ukraine's war effort, and still winkingly allows vast amounts of CSAM on his service Answer: No, what the fuck is wrong with you

The weird thing about taking a Thursday off from work is that it FEELS like tomorrow should be Monday but it's actually Friday. So I've got that going for me, at least!

I think I've figured out a big reason for my work dissatisfaction. While I acknowledge (reluctantly) that I bring a LOT of useful/specialized skills to the table, what I do is valued by the people I work WITH, not the people I work FOR. Which makes me useful to keep around but not worth advancing.

I should have seen the writing on the wall and started over doing consulting or some such thing ten years ago instead of staying where I am due to a desire for stability and a misplaced sense of loyalty to a system that has no such loyalty for me. Oh well. Just 15-20 more years of this to go.

ANYWAY, It sucks that if I don't want to work myself to death I'll have to sacrifice doing work that I want to for the sake of work that I have to, because there's no path forward for either and I only have energy for one. So glad to work in a system that treats science and creativity as trivial.

And while I love helping others improve themselves, finding creative ways to get things done, and adding value to the program (and have done so for over 20 years), none of that stuff is part of my duty statement so it means jack shit to the Powers That Be and is just extra fluff.

Forgetting to do something, then feeling too guilty/embarrassed to do that thing, then forgetting to do it AGAIN, then doing it super late and looking irresponsible/incompetent and repeating the cycle again with something else.

If you have ADHD (diagnosed or very strong suspicion) I have a question for you What ADHD symptom/quirk/characteristic has been the most detrimental to your life to date? For me, it’s my challenge w attention to detail & my terrible memory. I’ve lost more jobs than most ppl work their whole lives

Oh! Also the creeping and steadily ramping anxiety because I know I'm forgetting SOMETHING, followed by the depression flare-up when I realize what I (haven't) done and how it has likely caused me to look bad to others or cost me an opportunity for something I want or need.

Can I get a fish expert, either illustrator, scientist, or outdoors person familiar with anatomy who I can email my sketch of a Sacramento perch to check the gill cover/facial anatomy of art I’m doing for park signage? Fish are still a new-ish subject for me and I need fresh eyes plz. #SciArt 🐟

Please pause your scroll for this spectacular weevil. You're looking at one of the first two iNaturalist records of Systaltocerus platyrhinus, shared just in the last month!

Curious what the intersection of "using references is cheating/copying/stealing" and "using AI is NOT cheating/copying/stealing" looks like. Curious in a somewhat morbid way, at least.
