I used to make websites (Blogger, JPG Mag, Fray). I wrote the book “Design for Community.” Now I grow flowers and keep animals at milkbarn.farm in Boring, Oregon. No dooming in my replies. There's already enough doom in the world.

Yes, and also, I would absolutely vote for someone who said "we should ban online gambling because it's predatory and destructive to individuals and the world."

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

i don't think anyone should run explicitly on banning online gambling but i do think that a democratic-led government should just quietly take steps to undermine the industry and create an inhospitable regulatory environment

Cool. Do Jill Stein next.

This new law has also spooked the credit card processors and banks so bad, many are just pulling out of the market entirely. We've had to switch processors and banks several times in the last year just to keep selling.

So, unfortunately, I don't know if we'll still be selling CBD products come 2027. I hope to be, but I am truly a smol bean in this giant clusterfuck and have no control over any of this. And, yeah, it sucks. A lot. I'll keep you posted.

Since people have asked: We will definitely be ending the Loophole tincture by December 11, which is the new deadline. As for our other CBD products, I honestly don't know. They have minimal amounts of THC in them, but because they're made from natural inputs, there's always a little bit in there.

The new law says there must be no more than 0.4 mg of THC in a container. That number is so low, it's close to the LOQ (Limit of Quantification) of our lab tests, so our products will be within the margin of error. And they haven't defined how THC is calculated or the details on container size.

Make an offering to the god of bad art today.

The God of Bad Art gets offerings from all over the world, but in Their temple, They sometimes appear. "Why bad art?" I ask. "It is brave", the God replies. "To try and fail?" "No," the God chuckles. "Any creative work is a defiance of entropy, of Death itself. If you create, you do not fail."

Lula: "We had to overcome foreign interference through digital platforms, which we will have to regulate. A crime in the digital world must be treated the same as a crime in the real world. We cannot have monstrous companies earning millions... not paying taxes... wanting to steer elections."

Trump and Co. will try to steal the midterms. They're already trying. Gerrymandering, bad faith lawsuits, voter intimidation, and a whole lot of lies. But they don't have a genius secret plan. They're already doing whatever they can think of. And it's beatable. Shouldn't have to, but here we are.

Hungary's recent election was less free and more unfair than the upcoming US midterms, and pro-democracy forces still won. Similar point about Serbia's election this weekend. In normal democracy terms, America is in bad shape. But in consolidated authoritarianism terms, we're looking pretty good.

Whatever you create today, it is better than anything an LLM has ever regurgitated. Your worst art is art. Keep making it.

Aw man.

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

It's actually a handy way to tell a community from a cult. Cults only exist to amplify the person at the top. Communities amplify the people at the bottom.

It helps when you can acknowledge that platforms have purposes at all, which is still strangely uncommon knowledge.

Anil Dash@anildash.com

There's nuance here about "how do we use platforms owned by the fascists". You *have to understand the political purpose of the platforms* in order to use them to subvert authoritarians. For the most part, Americans simply do not. Centrists (including DNC consultants) do not. Major media does not.

The purpose of X is to spread far right white nationalism, full stop. If you participate there without acknowledging that, you're complicit. Same goes for Fox News and its lesser competitors.

It's almost as if being a far right politician requires also being a sniveling loser crybaby.

1. BREAKING: Flávio Bolsonaro is refusing to concede Brazil's presidential election and says he will seek to have the election annulled after losing to President Lula.

"Don't comply in advance" includes not believing them when they say they've already won.

Greg Sargent@gregsargent.bsky.social

Stunning Lula victory in Brazil is another sign of how easily we all let ourselves get psy-op-ed by the right's expressions of confidence into, you know, believing them. We really have to get over that habit!

"You can't vote your way out of--" Shut up.

The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.

It is a delicious treat.

Patrick Wyman@patrickwyman.bsky.social

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

This. This is how you do it.

Kansas Dem Sen. nominee Adam Hamilton on trans rights: “I don’t think we should take a small group of people and bully them, pick on them, and hurt them. I understand one thing really clearly when it comes to transgender people, and that is Jesus told me I was to love my neighbor as I love myself”

And you don't even have to make it a Jesus thing. You can just say "the Constitution says all Americans have the same fundamental rights, and that applies to my trans friends and neighbors, so anyone trying to exclude them is unAmerican."

I found a nest of transphobes who need to hear this and now will not because I am on a blocking spree but I'm going to say it for any I miss: If someone's physical body disgusts you, that is a problem with YOU.

i do not mean the democratic or republican base i mean independent political power, like unions, base-building organizations, member-led movements

we have to think so much less about finding the right candidates and so much more about building political power that makes individual candidates simple stewards of the will of the bases they are accountable to

Biden had a dog that bit people and told meandering stories at a whisper. He didn't get us into a war, he didn't help dictators, he didn't hurt our allies, and he didn't turn ICE into a military police force that killed Americans. This comparison is insane.

Josh Marshall@joshtpm.bsky.social

Put this under nature of the problem. From an axios piece by Jim Vendehei about the growing multiple risks of cascading crises. You’d say the same about Biden? Not politics? lol

One of the great indignities of Trump is that he is so evil, and the press is so complicit, they drag everyone down to his level just to make him seem normal.
