The science start-up Colossal is making sci-fi real! After resurrecting the dire wolf in 2025 using 72k-year-old DNA, they're eyeing the woolly mammoth for 2028. The goal: "rewilding" to restore and stabilize modern ecosystems. Read: bit.ly/4tIXAqo

dire wolves this, wooly mammoths that the only thing that will fix the world's ecosystems is combatting the major polluters that cause climate change. it's way more simple than whatever this is.

Nevermind that all of this is false, adding back species that went extinct 10,000 years ago is not a stabilizing force. Also, stop writing about science, Rolling Stone.

They didn't 'de-extinct' anything, you credulous ninnies. bsky.app/profile/adam...

The resurrection circus keeps clowning, but make no mistake, Dire wolves remain very extinct. An angry, sweary piece by a frustrated geneticist. arutherford.substack.com/p/dire-wolve...

I came here to tell you that they absolutely did not resurrect dire wolves, but everyone else already did that. So I'll just say you should be ashamed of yourselves and that it's a good time to delete this article.

None of this would restore or stabilize any ecosystem even if they could actually resurrect these species, the climate they lived in no longer exists and neither do their food sources

Are you guys ever embarrassed by how bad your science reporting is that you just swallow the corporate press releases at face value? This company has done neither of these things. You need to talk to an actual expert in genetics, or just any competent scientist to explain this to you.

They , quite literally , did not being back the dire wolf - this is sloppy journalism that could have easily avoided making that claim by simple fact checking against their PR department debunked claim

I request putting the woolly mammoth on hold & try resurrecting integrity and accountability in American politics. The non-scientific attempts to do this have failed miserably.

As an editor, gonna use this as an example of why exclamation points backfire terribly in most non-dialogue writing cases. Thank you for your service also dear god have you no shame

Come on Rolling Stone, I thought you were better than that. They didn't resurrect shit. They just fucked with the genes of a regular wolf to make it kinda look like a dire wolf. You don't gotta lie for the rich people

They did not bring back dire wolves. They made a new thing that isn't the old thing and called it the old thing. Y'all would glaze snake oil salesmen if you were an 1800's magazine.

Can we not do this for every single flavour of pseudoscientific scam artist. They haven't done any of these things and their claims are about as credible as Musk's delusions of orbital data centres and martian colonies.

Colossal tortures animals to make currently not-extinct animals look kind of like what we assume extinct animals look like---nazis did this with bulls because the thought of hunting aurochs made their dicks bust concrete. But extinction IS FOREVER and cosmetic eugenics isnt science!

in fact, there's a recent 2 part episode from QAA podcast all about Colossal and its mickey-mouse nazi origins! Stop mindlessly parroting ad copy for these fascist freaks and do even a little bit of research!

They did nothing of the sort. It's a modern wolf genetically altered to create a boutique "direwolf" look. It's no different from creating a labradodle. Plus the co-founder has Epstein's tissue samples and DNA from when they were creep friends.
