307,991 eligible voters not enrolled as of Friday. Almost half (43%) are 18-24. The least enrolled age group; now even more so than 2023. This govt KNEW this would happen—and did it anyway, with no mitigation plan. Such disdain for democracy, and for young people. www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/election-...

I accidentally drop a priceless Eisenhower Globe on another Eisenhower Globe, shattering both. I stomp my foot in rage and clumsily crush a third Eisenhower Globe

From the late ‘60s, a souvenir model of the Post Office Tower (as was). Per the blurb on the back: “The Tower itself is 619ft high including the 40ft steel lattice mast. The aerials and associated radio equipment will eventually provide for as many as 100,000 simultaneous telephone conversations.”

It's absolutely impossible to express how much this means and how unbelievable it seems.

There is well known Russian term for this - vranyo. Vranyo describes a form of shared and performative lying in which both parties know the other is lying but they both play along is if it’s true. See also kompromat.

It's hard to fathom where these cuts can even come from. Archives NZ has already cut services that would normally be considered essential. When I tell Australians in the sector over here that in 2024 Archives NZ wound up its digitisation unit and digitisation-on-demand service, they're gobsmacked

The Press@thepress.co.nz

In separate announcements on Wednesday, Department of Internal Affairs staff learnt 24 jobs would go, and Archives and the National Library staff learnt 45 jobs would be cut.

The death of history's most successful publisher: Google has a scorching case of "main character syndrome." bsky.app/profile/did:...

I published my first story in 1988, when I was 17 years old. Today, at 55, I've published more than 30 books, with three more coming in the next year or so. In the intervening years, I've spent a lot of time thinking and talking about publishing.

King Death calling two of his victims to Judgement in St Machar's Cathedral, Aberdeen, on the memorial to Patrick Scougal, c1690. Scougal was the last-but-one Church of Scotland Bishop of Aberdeen before the episcopacy was abolished, a notorious anti-Catholic and witch-hunter. 1/3 #MemorialsMonday

Surely that poor dead horse should be spared the flogging by now… A small number of errors in a database in years that are not included in the calculation of Australia’s temperature trend means, frankly, bugger all. (Other than to remind me why The Australian can’t be taken seriously any more.)

Peter Hannam@peterhannam1.bsky.social

The Australian attacks the Bureau of Meteorology…for data a century or so old … what a relief that we don’t have to worry about climate change… (handy, too, to undermine the coming State of the Climate, and the mass of record temperatures in Australia and abroad)..

I am terribly sad to hear the great Douglas Dunn has died. I turn to a treasured copy of Terry Street, inscribed by both the author and its previous owner Derek Mahon!

It's petty, unconstructive and vengeful, but we should still spend a lot of time rubbing this in the faces of everyone who said this is hysteria, as a little treat for ourselves

All of this sucks and congratulations we are creating 19th century systems where only the wealthy elite can study the subjects that make us human and critical thinkers.

Pleased to see this is going really well for them.

We understand the strength of feeling this AI Charter has provoked & that more explanation is needed. We will publish a blog tomorrow detailing why, in a vacuum of regulation, this charter demands more transparency & accountability from organisations on how they are using AI now and in the future.

OUP really does seem to be struggling at the moment, and recent books are poorly proofread - here the same typo crops up in both the contents page AND the chapter title. In-text typos are one thing, typos in chapter titles are something a publisher should probably, um, avoid 😳

Gonna tell my kids this was the Bayeux Tapestry.

This 1804 French print boldly suggests Napoleon’s invasion of England could be carried out by routing troops & guns through Channel tunnel with further troops attacking from hot air balloons. English defenders include riflemen flying on kites (Belloc, La Telegraphie Historique, 1888)

Detailed study of the dissemination of the spinach decimal point error, which was repeated thousands of times, convincing millions that spinach was a great source of iron compared to other veggies, all faked but caused by citing citations of citations without checking.

Fascinating account showing how a false claim can become widely accepted (and propagated by multiple independent sources) as a result of a common academic shortcut: citing a source you haven't actually read after seeing it cited by another source: journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....
