there’s a discourse going around today about why western devs can’t make a game as good as chrono trigger and i think it’s worth saying that a lot of japanese devs can’t make a game as good as chrono trigger either

Chrono Trigger is my favorite game but I think people’s expectations are killing their experience with CT inspired games, even tho some of them are def bland. For me, Sabotage nailed the spirit in Sea of Stars without feeling lifeless in the way some CT inspired games do

aw geez i just cant figure out why nobody is able to have the same success as 3 high-profile artists being given a blank check and an already written game engine to build off of. probably uh due to woke or something

your only shot of something similar to that would be indie, like undertale, which is a jrpg made by western devs. the chances of non-indie western devs being able to make something that impactful are very, very slim. but that's true with japanese devs as well!

I mean it just had some of the biggest names at Square and Enix working together for character designs, plotting and music, all who had made their mark, would go on to make said mark with this game or be part of another similarly legendary game as the third person behind it.

Let alone the fact that Chrono Trigger itself inspired the creation of a few games. Septerra Core, Anachronox, Daikatana. Each with their own unique take and spin on ideas and concepts in the game. From the basic JRPG stuff, to the world building and combat systems.

Septerra Core itself being severely underrated if a bit long in the tooth that attempts to be a very earnest fushion of JRPG and PC Adventure games that has a ton of ambition. (CGI Cutscenes, Fully Voiced Dialog, completely original world, rag tag main characters)

as far as I know sometimes the exact same sentiment happens with Japanese games being like "this is inspired by Chrono Trigger" and then it turns out to not have what made Chrono Trigger good

Hell, they couldn't make a proper sequel to Chrono Trigger twenty five years ago, on more powerful hardware than the Super NES. We got... whatever Chrono Cross was.

i think thats what started it and i do agree, like jrpgs are absolutely pulling from jump i don't think you can say that's not true, but watching the posts go around the last day i think there's a lot of assumptions being made on way too small a sample size, just cause of character limits

by which i mean i think generalising to all western indie devs is unneccesary when what basically 85% of the posters mean is "sea of stars fucking sucks" lmao

This makes it sound like every JRPG should be like Chrono Trigger, which I don't think is the point. The point is, many indie devs are using Chrono Trigger as a base and marketing point (if not them, definitely game journalists), and when people play it, it's not Chrono Trigger.

Oh yeah no. It has. It's just that kind of marketing can backfire sometimes. See Nick All-Stars Brawl. Smash fans and media have marketed it as a killer to the iconic series. People overhyped it, and when it launched, it was just an average fighting game.

lol i prefer chrono cross to chrono trigger, my intent was pushing back on the idea that there's one essential reason why westeners can't capture the magic of jrpg writing, because there's good and bad writing eveyrwhere, with influences of all kinds

i don’t think there’s any essential reason why western devs can’t write good jrpg inspired stories, if that premise is even true. i think good writing is hard, and making a game is harder in completely different ways

1. The CT devs were called “The Dream Team” for a reason, it was composed of MULTIPLE industry veterans and had the oversight of the Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy creators. 2. It’s incredibly hard to catch lighting in a bottle, even CT had a chance of not ending up like how it eventually did.

3. There CAN’T be another Chrono Trigger, because Chrono Trigger is Chrono Trigger. Instead, focus on creating something that is uniquely its own thing, just like how Chrono Trigger is uniquely its own thing.

I feel so many of them are attempting to emulate CT without understanding the ethos of the game. It's not really the specific plot or design points per se, it's just an incredibly dense JRPG that was ahead of its own era while having an emotionally resonant soundtrack.

It's not really a game you go "I'm gonna make a better one" because a fair amount of what made it stand out was the pool of games around it. If you wanna make one of the great RPGs of now you're most likely gonna make something that doesn't draw much comparison to CT.

chrono trigger is a marginally translated mechanically stunted video game that was nonetheless filled with cool anime flavor that came out when the modern devs were teenagers people shouldn't be trying to make chrono trigger

Reminds me of how people say “of course the women are well written in Fullmetal Alchemist, it’s because the mangaka is a woman” And, like, I think there’s more to it than that? I think it’s fair to call the author of one of the most beloved stories ever… a good writer?

I think Arakawa gets her flowers for writing an engaging stories with a bajillion characters that all get a satisfying resolution in an insane climax, but whenever people boil the women/romance down to “the author is a woman” I wonder if maybe she doesn’t get enough credit after all

imo chrono trigger is gaming's biggest monkey's paw; in originating new game+ it did so much to the notion we have now that games need to be replayable forever nobody remembers that ng+ was done to specifically interact with the premise of the gaaaaameee

yeah, it's very much inviting you to return to the game with greater context and gag reels! it's part of the package, not trying to keep you on the hook forever

And in most of the cases the ng+ is a boring enemystats+(level cap)*(number of ng+es you are on). Few actually change the game when you're doing a ng+, not even skipping the initial tutorial sections when you no longer need them

Because it's not a JRPG. If someone calls Chrono Trigger the best of all time there's a good chance they prefer JRPG-style over CRPGs. They're fundamentally different formulas.

But now we are just going down to personal preferences. The underlying argument OP was alluding to is that Western Devs are incapable of making long-standing beloved classics like Chrono Trigger. A false premise given how there are games right now that will be looked on fondly for decades.

call this a hot take but imo the primary difference between baldurs gate 3 and a jrpg is the jrpg is made in Japan. baldurs gate 3 is a dragon quest that is horny in different ways

Eh, apples & oranges. Is BG3 successful as CT? Maybe, but BG3 has a tonal different feel. It's ultimately an immersive sim rpg meanwhile CT is not that at all. I think people want to make a game that's tonal similar to CT

I really do think there's a level of racism going into so many people's "Japan makes the best media" opinions. Like, yes, Japan has many great games, movies, anime, etc. So do so many other countries. Saying Japan has the best media just feels so reductive to every country, including Japan.

I mean, I don't think anyone has touched Chrono Trigger, not even Square. But I do think there've been a lot of great, interesting "western" (whatever that means) games over the years: Undertale, CrossCode, Cassette Beasts, To The Moon series, Chained Echoes, Clair Obscur looks dope, etc.

Chrono Trigger was the best of the best in the JRPG biz at the time all getting together to specifically make a kickass JRPG, and then after FF7, the JRPG kind of died off for decades and has only recently really made a big comeback. And "western devs," at least AAA ones, ain't making JRPGs.

So what you're left with are indies, and the indie devs, despite often being very small teams including often just a single person, have been doing phenomenally well. I have no doubt if some banded together and buckled down with a decent budget, they might be able to actually do it, if they wanted.

Chrono Trigger was a dream team of developers coming together to make lightning in a bottle. It has 30+ years of nostalgia backing it, unrivaled talent that made it one of the best RPGs on the system, and is/was an industry darling. No one is ever going to make that again.

a lot of ppl forget chrono trigger is fondly remembered as it is because it never makes you engage with its systems ever and is just an onslaught of SNES setpieces with the occasional elemental weakness boss

true, but also, square during that era made live a live, a game imo even better than chrono trigger as well, they just had the sauce flowing like mad in the 90s for some reason
