there’s a discourse going around today about why western devs can’t make a game as good as chrono trigger and i think it’s worth saying that a lot of japanese devs can’t make a game as good as chrono trigger either

This makes it sound like every JRPG should be like Chrono Trigger, which I don't think is the point. The point is, many indie devs are using Chrono Trigger as a base and marketing point (if not them, definitely game journalists), and when people play it, it's not Chrono Trigger.

It's kind of like when gamers and journalists hype up the new game as a "blank killer", only for it to backfire completely.

And yes, I know. You're probably taking a jab at Chrono Cross lol.
