This is a very good story. Yet it's amazing to see the New York Times continually miss the forest for the trees.

It’s not just one billionaire. It’s a full-blown cult of billionaires who believe dictatorship should replace democracy—and that technology (crypto and AI) will make this inevitable. They say it loud. Some guy just wrote a book about it (That guy is me!) www.simonandschuster.com/books/The-Ne...

simonandschuster.comThe Nerd ReichNEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “This transfixing debut from journalist Durán investigates the antidemocratic ideologies espoused by tech billionaires ...

The NYT is ok with extremist ideology as an anecdote in a profile—but highly allergic to any deeper examination of the ideology itself. No one gets to write an op-ed explaining any of this. That’s not allowed. But a billionaire can drop it in a quote as a passing comment.

See their interview with Naomi Klein where they can't seem to get past the title of her book so they don't have to deal with the subject matter of her book

Cal Newport's op-ed on the related topic of the "rationalists" and the craziness of Silicon Valley culture (emphasis on the first syllable) was good, but with the NYT it's always one step forward, nine steps back.

That’s the real brilliance of your book. You bring ALL the receipts! It’s all out in the open. They’re telling us what their plans are. They’re shouting it from the rooftops! It’s important to listen to them, not because they’re so smart, but because they’ve got us in their crosshairs

It's their evil-dumb (fear) chasing pointless profit on a dying planet. Anxiety isn't about "make more money!" Anxiety is about "grieve your past harms to wake up!" They're resisting taking emotional accountability and it makes them MORE dumb, more panicked, more useless

CRYPTO is the driver of much of this. ZERO UTILITY besides grift, attempted closed wealth system, and therefore influence.. Use dollars to buy and then convert to dollars when sold to next sucker because u always need an higher buyer.....madoff Crypto summit aug 17th at WH...wake up people

bsky.app/profile/gild... @gilduran.com, @nytimes.com has also published a piece today calling Karoline Leavitt a "fierce and nimble speaker" and Trump's "machine gun". They aren't missing the forest. They see it, they just pretend it's not there and walk around it. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/05/b...

love hearing about efficiency from a guy who made his money on crypto, of all fucking things, whose entire premise rests on INefficiency

You will find me endlessly arguing against using the word authoritarianism, because it's a cold war propaganda word, but I think you're actually using it here correctly because these particular fascists are like a fascist vinegarette reduction.

interesting.. i endlessly argue for using the term authoritarianism because it gets to the heart of the problem with any other "ism".. or religion or corporation.. we have roughly 1/3 of any population being authoritarians.. EVERY time they gain enough power they fuck everything up.. human nature..

i'll add that it's a bit on the nose about it being cold war propaganda coming from the authoritarians in our country at a time we were VERY authoritarian, and are so still.. and what the "law and order" morons are all about in actions and words.. there is no law but "because i said so" with them..🤮

It is very billionaire-brain coded to think that efficiency matters more than self-determination and the humanity of our species, as a whole and as individuals. IDGAF about efficiency. I care about anti-corruption, and outright waste, but not "extreme efficiency" at all.

Hi. Amateur historian here. You don't get benevolent dictatorships, which is why we don't use them. You get dictators. Case in point. Trump is a dictator. He has been extremely efficent in dismantling 250 years of democracy and erasing the bill of rights. He ignored both other branches of government

So you can build a nation over centuries and get maybe even several benevolent dictators in a row, leading the nation to success. And then you get one Trump who destroys everything because he's a fucking moron, and you, the poor fucking citizen, have no way to stop it.

Sure. Efficiently corrupting. Efficiently one sided. Efficiently restrictive. Pretty sure efficiency was never the selling point of democracy. Democracy was the point of democracy. 🤔

The fetish of efficiency and the ledger-like moralism of ultilitarianism are both products of The Enlightenment. This is what happens when the tools of the Age of Reason become not the means to human flourishing but the ends themselves. Even Voltaire understood where this led absent common sense.

First they came for the billionaires. And I said, "Sure - I'll show you where they're hiding. Give me a sec to fetch my phone, so I can film this. Do you have enough zip ties?" Because they would never speak for me.

Trump is a wannabe dictator and we can see how that works. Incompetent sychophants in charge of everything. None of them can say the Emperor who is all knowing and all seeing and has the biggest brain has no clothes. That's how they all work.

They’re never benevolent, just occasionally useful for the connected few. At least for a little while, til they lose favor or become disloyal. Only a fucking idiot or complete bootlicker would have this kind of world view. Fuck this asshole.

Dictatorships are actually extremely inefficient because the government is run by incompetent loyalists, corruption is rampant, and policies turn on the whims of the dictator. The Nazis did not make the trains run on time, that was just propaganda.

The efficiency is entirely deceptive (temporary). The inefficiencies are far greater and manifest themselves in botched transitions.

This is sometimes attributed to Voltaire-- "The best government is a benevolent tyranny tempered by an occasional assassination." But I'm not sure he really said it.

And it’s not even accurate. The only thing dictators are efficient at is funneling money to themselves. Because of their corruption and the impossibility of speaking truth to power, it’s much harder to identify and fix problems bsky.app/profile/gild...

The wealth of the Forbes 400 is 20% of the amount of the national debt. We need a billionaires tax to prevent the wealthy from using their wealth to destroy our democracy, but also to fund programs that they say we can’t afford because of the national debt.

Funny how fascism protects the oligarchs from accountability so efficiently. bsky.app/profile/gild...

Gil Duran talks about the countries they want to create. Just google "Network States" with his name and he explains it all pretty well about what the techbros want to inflict on humanity politically.

Why not use these technologies to help make democracy more efficient? Given crypto's obsession with treating social problems as technical problems, it's pretty glaring when they take the pass.

The Gilded Age (1920s) oligarchs (Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, et al) were at least content to influence events behind the scenes, and build universities. These assholes are just straight-up demanding to rule.

The single most important tenet of democracy is respect for the Rule of Law, applied to everyone regardless of their status or wealth. The peaceful transition of power is a ritual of observance of the Rule of Law. This follows even if there are different levels of enfranchisement and voting systems.

"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority, still more when you superadd the tendency or the certainty of corruption by authority"

DEPRAVED BILLIONAIRES MUST BE TAXED OUT OF EXISTENCE! Dems win if they run on this. It's more clear than ever that we have a sociopathic billionaire class who have entirely too much power, $$$ and zero respect for human dignity. THE TIME IS NOW! THE PEOPLE ARE FED UP AND READY! RISE UP!

One of the faculty members at the college I work at asked me to buy your new book for the library so he could read it. I did, and he absolutely loved the book and learned a lot from it. So good work!

Benevolent dictators are a fantasy. Theres a reason dictatorships are synonymous with oppression, abuse and death of citizens. Democracy has its problems but those inefficiencies actually can protect as much as they can harm

All these billionaires have never truly experienced consequences for their actions and think of themselves as above punishment, excpt in very rare cases where the rule of law has been applied to them, mostly as a fine or a light social rebuke. The downsides of autocracy are invisible to them.

“Let’s believe he’s a good man. But his second-in-command–is he a good man too? You’d better hope so. Because he’s the supreme ruler too, in the name of the king. And the rest of the court…they’ve got to be good men. Because if just one of them’s a bad man the result is bribery and patronage.”

They are so god-damned stupid. I mean willfully ignorant. That's what ultimately drives me nuts, they're so fucking dumb. Every lever of society with hundreds of thousands of competent, hard working people, and Darryl Dumbass w a Billion dollars getting called genius by dumber media.

I mean, I have a cutoff on wealth, we don't need Billionaires, 999 million is more than enough monetary compensation for whatever you might have contributed to society. If you "need" more than that I suggest therapy, because you will never be satisfied by more income, you have a deeper need.

Quibble: Let’s look more closely at the implications of the word “efficient.” Are these benevolent billionaires smuggling in the proposition that the ultimate goal of society is “efficiency”? A slaughterhouse can be run efficiently. A business can pay starvation wages in the name of efficiency.

Ah yes, the Ayn Rand/Friedrich Nietzsche pipeline from nuanced discourse about the complex relationship between the individual and society to overly technocratic "efficiency" based solely on the whims of a "benevolent" dictator. Because no "benevolent" autocracy in history has *ever* failed. 🤮

Autocracy is incompatible with human freedom. Some are more malevolent than others, but there is no such thing as a benevolent dictator.

I have a proposal: All these monarchist parasites can be relocated to an unpopulated island of their choosing. There, they can use weapons, generously supplied by the people of the Earth, to choose which of them will be king of the island. We can airdrop food once a week until they're all dead.

Thiel ("inspired" by Yarvin et al) is fairly loud about what he believes and wants, and Musk is an openly fascist loudmouth...so this twerp is just one who consented to a profile in the NYT. Sadly the techbros have pretty big mouths about their politics nowadays.

These people’s minds are broken. He can’t conceive that democracy is a good in itself or that people other than him are entitled to agency too.

South Park by the way just did an episode about this. A lot fewer people would hate billionaires quite so much if they'd just keep their shitty opinions to themselves and go about their evil business quietly.

Problem is, benevolence, at least to the whole of society, doesn't track with the extreme narcissism required to even want to be a dictator.

That ‘if’ does a loooot of work there… first the chances of finding a benevolent autocrat is 0 as it by design attracts terrible people, the inevitable backstabbyness of the inner circle is bad and quite inefficient, and problems of transition are historically very messy, just nope

Efficiency should never be the primary goal of good governance. Services should first be designed in a way that’s best for *all* of society. THEN find the most efficient ways to deliver those goals, accepting a certain amount of waste and overlap as inevitable, but a small price to pay.

I’m gonna go insane, dictators aren’t efficient! It’s total bullshit! Running any group larger than a weeknight trivia team quickly becomes too complex for information to flow through one person! And that’s not even addressing the flimsiness of these guys being supposedly “benevolent.” Fuck!

It is wild to believe this. 20th century history is a series of authoritarian regimes being absolutely bodied by the material efficiency of liberal democracies.

the extra dumb thing is that it's not true even if you DO get a "benevolent" dictator, because even well-intentioned individuals simply cannot properly allocate and manage resources by themselves on a national scale.

Notice people who say this never have any examples of where a benevolent dictatorship works. Where's the data that shows this? What specific country is run more efficiently? The Russia model? Saudi Arabia? Just what country do they think is so much better than any democracy?

You’ve heard it before from weirdo tech billionaire Peter Thiel, who is deeply involved in the career of weirdo Vice President JD Vance.

Dictatorships are horribly inefficient. You get an army of thugs looking to run their own small pond, just as the thuggish "Benevolent Dictator" does. Quickly everyone realizes merit is meaningless. The only thing that matters is carrying favor with the Dictatorship. Meaning just like Trump today!

Me: We need someone, such as me, to unilaterally take command and make all the hard choices. Also Me, the unquestionable overlord: We need to address all these mouthy people questioning me and hang bits of them from every corner of the realm to highlight why you don't question me.

Wealthy men hunger for the “efficiency” of complete control. What does that look like? It looks like telling you what to think, how to live, what to read and say, who to marry, and when to bear children. The efficiency is in the utter lack of choices, inc. over your children, who they will traffic.

This is, in fact, one of the first things one is taught in a graduate economics program. The reasoning is simple: A benevolent dictator can always impose whatever outcomes a democratic government can produce, and can also choose a better outcome if it's available. Fun in theory, hard in practice.

Baffling to me how they can put benevolence and dictatorial power together in their heads without any sort of thought about the consequences.

I had this debate with my college PolySci professor. He handed me my ass. Thank you Dr Bruce Cain, for disabusing me of this sort of horseshit.

Even if you get "efficiency", who on earth said that was the goal? A lot of people love Singapore. It's an orderly, prosperous society where I'd never want to live. The point of democracy is representation and consent of the governed. It wrangles competing interests and is inefficient by design.
