"Fierce debate has broken out" = the same NIMBYs who've been trying to delay this project with dodgy research and spurious claims for the past five years bring out their latest bout of dodgy research and spurious claims.

Bedford Independent@bedfordindependent.co.uk

A fierce debate has broken out over East West Rail in Bedford. Rail bosses say a town-centre route is vital for growth and Universal UK, while campaigners push for a southern bypass to protect homes and save £1bn... #Bedford #BedfordNews #EastWestRail #Infrastructure #Regeneration #EWR #Environment

It's the real pension age in this country. The age when you become the war generation. Looking forward to turning 70 and regaling the youngsters about my bravery at Dunkirk.

yet again, I am asking, just how long ago people think the Second World War actually was

One fix would be for money to be added to the prize fund for every traitor banished. Wouldn't change behaviour necessarily, but the faithful would have something to show for it at least.

Jim Pickard@pickardje.bsky.social

one year the participants in Traitors will finally realise there’s literally no point in finding traitors for the first dozen rounds because they just get replaced anyway

My more complicated idea is separate traitor and faithful prize funds. Every time the faithful banish one of their own, the traitors get money, each time the faithful get a traitor, they get money. And each can steal from the other through the challenges etc.

Drury *this* close to saluting their courage, strength, and indefatigability.

“That’s a victory for being thick skinned and defiant”, says Peter Drury. Funny, because I thought it was a victory for repeated cheating to the point that the football club should be kicked out of English football.

As disappointed as I am, this is probably the perfect result to sum up the sorry state of the Premier League as it stands. We’re watching a sham. The cheats still prosper.

These guys don't know a thing about Athens either. Sure, it was a democracy but it was also a rapacious imperial power that exploited its allies and used its military might to impose its will on others, and oh I get why they like it now.

RIP Jeffrey Archer, not a day goes by when I don't think about the judge in his 1987 libel case (which Archer "won" by doing a bunch of perjury) summing up for the jury by going "would a guilty man have such a hot wife". one of the most insane legal moments of all time

Probably the best thing about Strictly is back! "He dances with the urgency of the dribbling tap in a Nando’s toilet" Just perfect.

Can't believe after a decade of Tory Brexit nonsense, it's a Labour government that has got me so frustrated I'm writing emails to my MP. First time it was Starmer's vile immigration speech. Now it's me asking them to consider maybe doing something - anything - about the fascist mobs on the streets.

Who the hell is giving their kids a fiver?! Mine get a pound and usually forget about it so quickly, they don't notice it's the same coin that's given to them the next time...

Putting a milk tooth under your pillow and waking up to find it replaced by a coin has been a money lesson for generations of children. Yet even the tooth fairy is not immune from the effects of inflation or the cashless society, writes Claer Barrett: ft.trib.al/1n5vsfw

There are similar ones with Martin Lewis confronting Bailey instead, accompanied by a fake BBC news page. My parents were almost taken in by it.

In the last few weeks on X, I have been served dozens of ads similar to this that seem to show AI-generated images of Nigel Farage having some sort of altercation with the governor of the Bank of England or a CEO on Question Time or Newsnight No way in hell I'm clicking on it but clearly a trend

This reminds me of a local company called "Bedford Batteries" whose tagline is "Not just batteries!"

This is pretty scandalous I think. The local mayor ran an overtly anti-EWR campaign, got elected by a few hundred votes, then spent thousands of pounds on spurious studies challenging the railway, and has now admitted he has a financial interest because the chosen route cuts across his family land.

One of the infuriating things about this government is they seem to view the political landscape like the weather, rather than something they can influence and reshape with the vast powers at their disposal.

If I were the government, I simply would not be directing eyeballs and the political conversation to a website run by a guy who has explicitly said he opposes the PM and is visibly fighting an information war against me.

Given the constraints Sam identifies, as well as Burnham's background, I wonder if something dramatic on electoral reform and devolution will be top of the agenda. Low cost and quick implementation compared to many reforms, and it'd appeal to disgruntled left wing voters and wonkish centrists alike.

Putin’s aims for Ukraine are textbook genocidal. He says Ukraine doesn’t get to exist, that Ukrainian language & culture doesn’t exist. His actions - civilian massacres, occupation, executing people who have Ukrainian symbols, the child abductions - all genocidal
