During spooky season three years ago I was talking to my horror-loving kid about slasher movies and I said, "What I don't get is why the victims are always young people. If anyone is being stalked by death it's people my age." This is gonna be so much fun.

On top of everything else this motherfucker *doesn’t believe in germ theory*

The Bulwark@thebulwark.com

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

Although as always I do wish commenters would watch the clip, not just read the quoted part. Yes this is racist af but everyone is responding with history lessons and his whole (again, loathsome) point is that this history has been destroyed by degenerate modern Arabs

I just found out my sister and her kids load the dirty dishes *while* emptying the clean ones because they think it's more efficient. Pure madness.

Why isn't there a hiphop version of Booker T's "Green Onions" called "Rapscallions"?

Moby Dick@mobydickatsea.bsky.social

The devil fetch ye, ye ragamuffin rapscallions; ye are all asleep. Stop snoring, ye sleepers

"Don't bend over like Zimmerman. It is not graceful." Arthur Augustus Zimmerman, "The Jersey Skeeter" (1869-1936). One of the first cyclists to license his name for athletic gear.

'Some dont's for the women bicyclist.' A satirical 1895 article commenting on judgemental attitude towards women cyclists.

"Bob Dylan was a great songwriter but not a great musician" is an argument greatly undermined by how nearly every cover of Bob Dylan is worse than the original

I don't know what the best Taylor whether lyric is but this one is probably the quintessence But I miss screamin' and fightin' and kissin' in the rain And it's 2 AM and I'm cursin' your name So in love that you act insane And that's the way I loved you

My usual answer to this is dental floss. You have no idea how unpleasant it used to be. But, well, looks like you’ll be finding out again!

washingtonpost.comDental floss is shedding potentially harmful chemicalsManufacturers are switching to different materials, trading smoothness for safety.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

With Tom Skerritt's passing, the cast of Alien have so far died in the same order as the director's cut (where they find Dallas still alive waiting to become a cocoon): 1) John Hurt 2) Harry Dean Stanton 3) Ian Holm 4) Yaphet Kotto 5) Tom Skerritt It's macabre, sure, but it's also fascinating.

Our parents: the designated driver used to be the person who was the least drunk. All of us texting on the 401: that's crazy!

Daniel Radosh@radosh.bsky.social

It’s crazy that drunk driving used to be socially acceptable, I think while searching for old PSAs on YouTube as I barrel down 6th Avenue

Saw it on the big screen tonight for the first time in 35 years. Still holds up.

Daniel Radosh@radosh.bsky.social

I watched An American Werewolf in London many times as a kid but just rewatched for the first time as an adult. 1) It holds up great and 2) It's remarkable how I, as a Jewish teenager, completely missed what this movie is about

On top of everything else, so funny to be saying you can't report on polls that lack scientific basis at a time when TV is going all in on prediction markets

Kevin Collier @kevincollier.bsky.social

In any other admin, this would probably be the most outrageous official statement ever made by a sitting FCC director: Strongly implying that the government forbids broadcast networks from reporting on the president's falling poll numbers. (Sorry to paste from twitter but that's where he posts.)

They say Big Walk is online co-op only but Giovanni disagrees

Daniel Radosh@radosh.bsky.social

Ok the final section of Big Walk is one of the all time great gaming experiences. Play it with people you vibe with!

Books I've read and enjoyed after seeing people talk about them on Bluesky: Murderbot The 3rd Policeman Little, Big The Sea, The Sea Across the Universe Gideon the Ninth Understanding Octavia E. Butler Gormenghast Rabbi Burns

Josh Cook@joshthelibromancer.bsky.social

Was it @joshuajfriedman.com who declared "BlueSky is the app for books?" Maybe @lollardfish.bsky.social Anyway, this post went around yesterday & I had the most new subscriptions...I think ever on a single day. October issue should go out tomorrow afternoon!

Interesting! Disney added the jumping off the cliff part but the idea that lemmings will migrate into the sea until they drown dates at least to this highly speculative article (that includes the phrase, "We shall have a severe winter and no grass next spring, owing to those children of Satan!")

Bob Roman@bobroman.bsky.social

The Disney documentarians were hoping to film the behavior, and when they didn't find it they gave the creatures a push over the cliff. But the legend of lemming suicide is older. It first took root with this Popular Science article from 1877. en.wikisource.org/wiki/Popular...

Going through the NYC voter guide trying to decide who I want for city council and when you think you’ve gotten to the crazy part of this bio, keep reading because you haven’t

Since there’s also a movie facts prompt going around I feel like not enough people know that lemmings don’t really throw themselves off cliffs, that’s all based on a scene staged for a 1958 Disney documentary, just absolutely brutal character assassination (also, actual assassination)
