Mrscomputer is very gifted at remembering every student’s name, and that is part of why ten years since she’s been out of classrooms I still encounter people out and about in Lansing who see our last name and gush about how she’s their favorite professor of all time.
i learned this game from a colleague first week of teaching and have done it in every class ive ever taught without fail - genuinely the best thing you can do.
It's not weird or surprising that companies decided that they'd rather not have us talk to each other to get information when they can charge us for accessing that same information through an object they own.
It's bad but not surprising.
Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea
Students from North Carolina A&T can be seen marching back to their HBCU after voting on the first day of early voting in the state.

Swimming in a Great Lake is an incomparable experience and a great privilege. Let’s keep advocating to make that privilege available to everyone in a waterfront city or town.
The bizarre culture that’s sprung up around Silicon Valley AI companies - which overlaps hugely with rationalist and effective altruist circles - appears to be seriously pressuring some women into attending sex parties for the sake of networking.
This is, needless to say, horrifying.
we have control mechanisms for this. it's called The Law. these guys should be held personally liable for these harms. the suicides, the thefts, the intrusions into computer systems. they should be sued and prosecuted as appropriate. problem immediately solved
NASA picture of the day today is a real 🏴beauty! This is a composite image of the ~5000yo Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis. The amazing Giuseppe Petricca has only gone and photographed the Sun at noon there, every few days, for a whole year. #Dedication 🔭🧪👌

Eye popping. Court just unsealed Summary Judgment motions in New York Times v OpenAI / Microsoft.
Easy to see why the AI companies had so many redactions (pink). Their own people wrote the lede for NYT, the "largest theft of labor in human history"... "more and more substitutive..." /1
Fun fact: Tippi Hedren, the actress possibly most famous for her stellar performance in Hitchcock's The Birds, was a major cause of why ~50% of all nail salons in the US are Vietnamese owned and run. While she volunteered at Hope Village, a refugee camp in CA set up for aid during the Vietnam War,
Also, even if it were happening (which it isn’t), if you think sports are more important than people getting health care then I regret to inform you that you are both stupid AND evil.
I think the really important thing about the "trans sports debate" is that it's NOT REAL, the things that people are fearmongering about are NOT REAL and are NOT HAPPENING. Cis women are not competing at a disadvantage against trans women, cis men aren't transitioning to win at sports, IT'S NOT REAL
What is the quintessential Onion headline? The strong contender that just randomly popped in my mind is "Hank Williams Jr. Honored by Institute For Football Preparedness"
No, that isn't what happened here. The referees stole the game from WMU and gave it to UM because WMU is a small school and UM isn't. The fact that the Big10 is being trusted here to tell a story that happens to perfectly produce the outcome it would have wanted is insane.
My Lansing brain went right to “oh that’s because Car A changes lanes a half mile ahead of Car B, causing Car B to become blind with rage, standing on the accelerator to ram them.”
The distracted driving discourse is already popping off but I’d just like to throw in: I’ve been an insurance adjuster for almost 13 years. When I started, we almost never saw high speed rear end impacts. Now they’re like the most common type of claim. It’s distractions, this is obvious.
I don't think it's just rich people. There's a very poisonous thought amongst many, many people and we need to address it out loud, which is: "I had a bad time, why shouldn't other people have to?"
There are endless studies showing this and also the financial and societal benefits of universal basic income and or housing-first policies but the U.S. never goes for any of it because it would require allowing the poor to receive benefits that the rich consider “undeserved”
I recommend to you this podcast series about Dolly Parton by Jad Abumrad (creator of Radio Lab). You may ask: how did a MacArthur Award winning pub radio guy meet Dolly? Because she personally funded his father's vaccine research, that's how.

This is a great book, particularly if you want to get frustrated when your org refers to putting DORA metrics into a spreadsheet and making it into a chart and calling that Observability.
Excited to have gotten this in the mail today! Congrats @charity.wtf and team on making this book even more historically impactful than the first edition.
I suspect those who've speculated are right. Trump went ballistic on round one of the QatarForce One story because underneath it was this pretty humiliating episode of Trump getting smuggled out of Turkey in a food cart. And he'd do anything to stop that from getting out.
Steve Wilson, project leader for OWASP Top 10 for LLM created a game for learning the Top 10 for LLM. Works great in landscape mode. Check it out: open-agent-ai-security.github.io/promptfall/#llm#ai#games
I honestly don't understand how polling is as close as it is. I live in an area with plenty of middle of the road old school Democrat town, that have signs in their yard every election. Not a single Stevens sign. Abdul or nothing. Stevens signs are only posted up in "public" spaces at intersections.
The vibes may be exciting, but if Democrats are going to win this year and in 2028, they must reject the DSA.
If you’re tempted by a democratic socialist this year, think of what use Republicans will make of these victories, and ask whether you want to do favors for fascists.
This feels grimly accurate. I think for most people, engagement with the party feels like getting on Temu’s mailing list: Just a neverending stream of spam asking for cash and no other meaningful call to be part of anything that might generate any sense of identity or community.
There's nothing to "join" in the Democratic Party. It's a brand with products I spend my vote on once a year at the democracy store. Most people's experience of it is an endless stream of texts that read like scams, their reward for donating or signing a petition. No wonder DSA is growing
