Game devs throughout our industry are being disposed of and underappreciated. This crass petition and campaign sure isn't improving those issues and feelings. The devs who poured their hearts into Mass Effect 5 don't deserve to be tossed to the wayside and forgotten. Support game devs not games

Feeling deeply grateful that the majority of my fellow Torontonians made the correct decision in voting "YES" on today's binding referendum on the question of "Should Brad Bradford be legally exiled to Bradford, ON?" and I hope what follows will be a long productive healing process

I love being reminded that the audience really doesn’t give a shit about the developers. Like, forget that one of the most influential studios in our industry was just executed by its publisher, just make sure the product continues on the assembly lines!

After hearing news of BioWare's closure on Wednesday, over 75,000 Mass Effect fans have signed a petition demanding that EA put another studio in charge of the franchise or license out the IP. https://bit.ly/4siIubW

The last time I played Deus Ex was during the pandemic, out of sheer perversity. And now, a few years later, this line hits really hard:

Props to the ad agency: they nailed the "white person who plagiarises and steals credit using LLMs" look with 100% accuracy

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

it's 2030. there is one american game job. the game is a result of the fortnite-roblox merger. they added gatchas and ads exclusively for prediction market platforms. while you work on it, jared kushner and a random c-suite with at least 3 sexual assault cases take turns yelling at you.

I also wanted to pull out a special part of the piece: fuck Jensen Huang. By forcing customers to take early delivery of GPUs to boost quarterly revenues, he artificially inflated the price of RAM and every consumer electronic. What he and his hyperscale paypigs have done is morally reprehensible.

Free newsletter: In July, Apollo Economist Torsten Slok said that "AI better work out, or we have a problem." Facing ever-growing high-interest debt, negative-EBITDA AI labs and $200bn+ in warehoused GPUs, that's exactly what the AI industry has. www.wheresyoured.at/ai-had-bette...

my entire life trajectory was oriented towards "being good at things", I sacrificed quite a lot to get where I am today, and now society has deemed expertise not very valuable anymore and for what little remains, AI/people using AI will siphon it out of you the very moment they smell it in the air

Kathryn Long reposted

it really does feel like they just got away with unprecedented amount of theft of expertise, and are now profiting off of it while replacing the professional opportunities for the very crafts and humans it trained on I never thought I would see the concept of expertise get so devalued

This means that the increased price of RAM and consumer electronics was a result of an artificial "supply chain crisis" created by Jensen Huang pushing NVIDIA's customers to take early delivery of GPUs. Jensen Huang is responsible for making life worse for everyone.

Ed Zitron@edzitron.com

NVIDIA seems to be channel stuffing, forcing Amazon and other customers to take early delivery. The argument that these things are "scarce" when you don't even have anywhere to plug them into is nonsense...unless NVIDIA is saying you NEED to take them now, or else. GPUs are stacked in warehouses.

Last I'll post about this, but Elon Musk disagrees with me. This means I am onto something, and I feel more valid in my opinion than ever.

I feel every time anyone writes "developed with a core team of XX" about a game, they have a responsibility to write "developed by YY developers with only XX developers being employed"

Kathryn Long reposted

So I think everyone understands this already, but this is basically a euphemism for "we're hiring fewer full time employees and more contractors and codev studios because we don't have to pay them as much." I wish I could say this was an isolated case but I'm seeing it p much everywhere.

GamesIndustry.biz@gibiz.bsky.social

Star Wars: Galactic Racer was made by a core team of 75 people. "What we wanted to do was keep that core small, smaller than perhaps you might have done in the past, and scale capacity and capability with what we call distributed development." https://bit.ly/4hT02qg

If you dislike AI please stop saying AI can code now. Just because it can generate code that works for some loose definition of the word works doesn't mean it can code because coding is so much more than that. Please, I'm begging you, you do not, under any circumstances, gotta hand it to them

The latest Musk publicity stunt with his “”””flying”””” car illustrates the broader issue with a lot of the tech industry these days (particularly AI, but related to enshittification in general) in that: What pressing problem is this supposed to solve, and does it do so efficiently and effectively?

Kathryn Long reposted

Basically it's just very important to me that if someone burns $56k of diesel to do this, that I not benefit from their actions in any way
