The way AI art is pushed is so bizare if you think about it. Imagine if in 1997 Coca Cola were like "The Clip Art Genie is out of the bottle, from now on these will be our advertisements, it saves us a lot of money. like it or not"

Not a single parent has filed a book challenge in Palm Beach in two years. The district just removed 1800 books anyway, because AI told them to. There are many reasons that is unthinkable but let's not forget AI DOES NOT HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT THE BOOKS. IT CANNOT READ THEM. It just makes crap up!

Florida Freedom to Read Project@flfreedomread.bsky.social

Palm Beach pulled 1800+ titles from its school library collections because AI flagged them for review. Media specialists and principals must sign attestation forms verifying their libraries are compliant with vague law. None of this is normal. freedomtoreadproject.substack.com/p/when-ai-de...

It's as easy as it gets. The supposed 200K for the real indie game would have gone to real artists and programmers. The supposed 50K costs for the vibe-coded game go mostly to Big Tech companies such as his. It's his bottom-line, that's why it matters so much to him. bsky.app/profile/kim-...

(Ofc the numbers and "viability" talked about are non-sense. The other side of the coin is that nobody really wants to play some AI-generated shit put together by some lazy arse using plagiarism machines. That's his problem with the labels, it allows people to avoid the games they don't want).

This shit just writes itself at this point. Just the name "Epic AI MegaJam" is a joke that best describes what is going on with these companies.

So we've seen before with slopclones. The problems being created by "AI" are not so much about the supposed power of AI but about this cult creating incentives for companies and individuals to really ruin things bsky.app/profile/vexo...

So now they even make press releases about generating the exploit in 1 day (a feat that's normal to accomplish once you already found the vulnerability) or that they are releasing "Codex skills" to identify if your php version is vulnerable. As version checking wasn't completely doable before AI.

With slopclones. Nothing really stopped anyone from taking your indie demo and modding it to rename text and make the assets slightly different and try to publish the stolen demo as a different game. But what's changed is that the current culture of generative AI encourages and rewards plagiarism.

So the internet was initially designed as a way to keep communications going even after a nuclear holocaust. So it's all about your data getting routed through all sorts of channels and devices until it reaches its destination.

This is great for communication, but not so good for privacy and security. This was a problem when we started using the internet to send bank transfers or to organize political upprisings.

Enter public key encryption. If you want to send a message to someone, they can provide a "public key". You (your web browser) can use the key to encrypt the message and only the owner of the public key can decrypt it.

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

This is another reason why AI losers have gotten into retro decomp/recomp projects. Nobody wants to play AI slop games, so they have to reinforce the value of AI by producing something desirable, which in this case is just repackaging the work of actual talented people.

zagawee@zachisagardner.bsky.social

just wanted to share something i discovered the amount of games released in 2022 compared to this year has increased by 77%. I use 2022 because that marks the last year before AI really took over the internet whats crazy to me is that the amount of games with ZERO REVIEWS has ALMOST TRIPLED. ZERO?

It's pretty scary how much power is being amassed by just 3 or 4 companies. While we keep getting told AI is going to become sentient and destroy all humans. The real story is that Anthropic is amassing insane amount of information incl source code. And the ability to influence the code.

We already have flying cars. They're called helicopters. They're really expensive and there are good reasons you have to have a pilot license and work with air traffic control to fly them. Putting jets on a sedan is not going to result in a better vehicle or transportation experience in any way.

If the goal was to provide a good product, AegiSubs would have become the industry standard. But Instead, Crunchyroll (Sony) keeps pushing to replace aegisubs workflow with a tool called OOONA. It's hard to understand why. But I have a theory: The endgame is AI subtitles. daiz.moe/crunchyroll-...

By eliminating the expectation of proper subtitles that can adapt to the visual content of the media. If standards are lowered to just a stream of text. It is far easier and less expensive to generate the stream of text from just Japanese audio than possibly having to pass full video to the AI.

This is an example of the subtitles you can expect when AegisSub is in the workflow: Fonts, positions and color are changed to match the image. Dialog gets a completely different font and position so that you can focus on it.

Crunchyroll received a lot of pushback last year. And gave the appearance of backing down. But now we are learning that they just hoped to wait a year until people forget about the controversy. And they are once again pushing for the use of shitty subtitles, in low-profile releases.

The best theory to justify this baffling behavior is that this makes it easier to eventually sell the anime licenses to other streaming services, which use simple subtitles and don't support the .ass format generated by AegisSub But I think there's a bigger factor and is the roadmap to AI subtitles

A year ago, Crunchyroll got in hot water over this push. To explain things simply, anime subtitles tend to be better than the subtitles you find in your usual streaming service. And it's not just about the translation. Anime subtitles will usually make use of color, font and location.

The push for OOONA is basically a regression. OOONA is a "industry standard" for the rest of streaming services and the origin of all those awful subtitles that are basically just text and if you are lucky they MIGHT change location in rare occasions and that's just it.

We probably gotta talk about how you, as a person, are unlikely to lose your knowledge. But the billionaires can make sure that you run out of money bsky.app/profile/doct...

The fact that a theory-free AI might demand far more cash to accomplish a task (even a "solved" one like playing chess) than an expert would charge is beside the point. Billionaires *have* money, they *don't* have expertise.

hence why if you are "learning AI skills" and the "AI skills" consist of making your workflow dependent and more dependent on spending money on running AI prompts. You are playing a game that's rigged in the billionaires' favor.

Apropos of nothing. Isn't it weird how this is being framed as "anyone can build a website" now? Because... Everyone was always able to build a website or a game or etc. Hosting was abundant. Knowledge for how to start doing these things was always available. bsky.app/profile/sara...

This post is unavailable.

Easy tools and templates that help you do it were always available. Now there are real threats to "building your own site" and are not the lack of knowledge. It's things like Age Verification laws that are going to put a huge burden on web site devs.

Or rising hardware and cloud hosting costs caused by AI. And also the resource consumption from AI scrapping that will make it less viable to self-host. Meanwhile those vibe coding-based tools for building sites will be gated behind a token cost.

We always had the options and the open source tools to do things. Some folks' interest in Vibe coding is less avoiding technical limitations and more avoiding to have to credit anyone. It's preferable to credit "claude" a faceless corporation than have to admit you had to rely on some FOSS project.

the thing that really bothers me about a good half of these projects is like how often they are just two things stapled together with no transparency, like entire MiSTer cores that are just shitty, uncredited MAME ports

Those guys using vibe code to make launchers for emulator devices no longer have to admit they are building on top of Emulation Station's shoulders. Linus Torvalds can brag about how he "vibe coded" an app's graphics and thus he saves himself the embarrassment of having to credit Pygame.

Imagine I made a machine even smarter than Claude that was able to 'port' arcade ROMS on the fly! It would read the ROM and transform its instructions to native instructions of the device running my program. The process would be deterministic to avoid the stochastic parrot-caused bugs.

If "AI" were a mere tool and not a political narrative you wouldn't need to headline "X used AI to do Y" all the time. Anything anyone does while "AI" is involved must reify "AI"'s power and relevance. Because it's not "just a tool", it's a project of disenfranchisement some willingly embrace.

On one hand, the vibe-coded Epic launcher is very bugged and looks bland. But on the other hand, we had to burn a small forest to make it and it's going to be used as an excuse to get more people fired.

Not only no culture, but no *commons*. The dependency on the capitalist overlords will be complete, because you can’t ask for help or context from others when there is no common frame of reference. This has already happened in coding, the first space where they destroyed the commons we’d all built.

this is the ultimate end point of capitalism, ai will completely atomize everyone and there will be zero shared experiences. there will be no culture, only pure consumption. this must be resisted
