The #core of the #Earth spins around a slightly different axis compared to the #mantle. In this animation we start in a space frame and switch gradually to the frame spinning with the mantle. In that frame the core appears to wobble. The mantle precesses and the core, being fluid, lags a bit. 🧪 🔭

1/ There’s an instructive debate underway in the open review pages of @egu.eu journal Ocean Science. It’s about whether we can tell if the #AMOC is already on a trajectory towards collapse. What I think it really teaches is how scientists judge evidence, & why that differs from assessing risk. 🧵

doi.orgOpinion: The AMOC is weakening – time to take the evidence seriouslyAbstract. The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a critical component of the climate system. Climate models have long predicted a slowing of the AMOC due to anthropogenic forcing, w...

I don't care how famous you are in your field and how much grant money you bring in, how you treat your group members tells a lot about you. Over the years I have seen/heard of toxic behaviors from many PIs and they have lost my respect. ⚛️🧪

Someone please explain to me how could the "author" of this preprint "take responsibility for submitting this paper and for the accuracy of this statement" when he clearly states he has no training in astronomy, and cannot verify the results, meaning that he doesn't fully understand his own paper?

interestingggg.... paper on the arXiv tonight of a new planet candidate found with and written up entirely by AI, including the caveat, "The author has not independently checked the analyses and does not have the expertise to verify every technical detail." arxiv.org/abs/2610.28575

To the first, I say: Fine, I don't want to go where that bandwagon is headed. "Left behind" is an interesting phrase, it indexes a notion of a race towards a desirable/shining "future" that only some can access, and which we should all hope to participate in. >>

It’s Nobel week. While we partake in the (well deserved!) celebration of the individuals, let’s remind ourselves that science is a collective endeavor that stands on the shoulders of everybody. From the humble lab assistant to the Nobel laureate. There is no such thing as a lone genius. #Nobel

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

I am engaging more with Bluesky. What the hell is wrong with me that I still hold an account on a platform that serves as a forum to stroke a billionaire, mental toddler's ketamine fueled ego? When an ai leans towards coddling bigotry, it's very real and not intelligent. PLEASE FOLLOW

I'd never seen this Roy Lichtenstein painting before, but it's incredible how he manages unfailingly to make his copies worse than the original comics he's ripping off.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

This is the most remarkable story Ray Bradbury ever shared with me. He told it to me late one night, sitting in his den of antiquities and mementos. Take five minutes to read this. It’s pure magic. #Writing #Living #Creativity #RayBradbury #BookSky
