Trump is bragging about "an absolute fortune" being made in the Middle East. That must be comforting to the families of the 21 service members killed and the 865 wounded in the war with Iran.

One of the things sheriffs do is warp the perception of democracy. Each county has one sheriff no matter how few (or many) people live there. About 2/3 of counties are rural (there's no real definition of rural, so this is broad). Little map for you. The green is rural.

Alex Burness@burness.bsky.social

That’s a staggering fact to take in: About 1/3 of U.S. counties are now contractually partnered with ICE—to say nothing of all the counties assisting ICE more informally. I wrote recently about what this type of collaboration can do to communities: boltsmag.org/frederick-co...

The Army awarded an artillery shell project to General Dynamics in a rushed process without the typical vetting. The result: a fiasco in a Texas factory with robots in flames and half a billion dollars in taxpayer funds that yielded no usable shells. (Published August)

propublica.orgThe Costly Blunders in the Army’s $533 Million FiascoProPublica revealed how a rushed effort to arm Ukraine with artillery shells wasted half a billion dollars in taxpayer funding. Here are the biggest takeaways from that reporting.

The absolute unrelenting courage and tenacity of Epstein survivors cannot be lauded enough. They continue to be put through absolute hell and most of media ignoring each revelation is another renewed assault against them. The Pedophile Protector Party is run by a rapist.

Kyle Griffin@kylegriffin1.bsky.social

House Judiciary Democrats have just released a 50-page report that pulls together years of assault allegations against Trump and his reported connections to Jeffrey Epstein. The report calls for a special counsel to investigate Trump's ties to Epstein.

One week until Election Day. America deserves better than the pedophile protection party. Knock doors. Make calls. Get your friends to vote. Let’s elect Democrats up and down the ballot and finally make Trump release the Epstein files.

This, like the Comey seashell case, should have been laughed out of court, with severe sanctions on the lawyers who brought it. Judges need to stop playing nice. The DOJ is mocking the law. They should be severely punished.

As proof that this remark made people think of Donald Trump, JD Vance recited a new version today. He no longer talks about a "tinpot dictator," but "a FOREIGN leader IN THE MIDDLE EAST." That is, "I'm not talking about the tinpot dictator in DC, y'all!!!"

As the midterms approach, I would just remind everyone that US politics has become increasingly parliamentary and that what matters most is the *number* of Ds or Rs, not the idiosyncrasies or ideological quirks of individual candidates. If you want D outcomes, vote D up & down the ticket.

I did a classic base rate neglect demo in class today. Half of the class did probabilities (Kahneman & Tversky, Bar-Hillel) and half did natural frequencies (Gigerenzer & Hoffrage). Remarkable replication: complete base rate neglect for probabilities and perfect Bayesians for frequencies.

The political media is visibly chafing at the current situation, where Republicans are glaringly awful, fucking everything up, running deviant candidates everyone hates, and Dems are just being normal & winning.
