Fun project I've been working on the side for a couple of months now. I quite like cycling, but I hate that I need to sign up for Strava/Komoot just to be able to share routes. In the spirit of rewilding the internet with ATProto, I figured why not build an open alternative? www.attrails.app

attrails.appATTrailsDiscover and share cycling, running, and hiking routes on the open social web.
ATTrails@attrails.app

Hello, world! ATTrails is a route sharing app built on ATProto. Discover running, cycling and hiking routes shared by the community, and contribute by sharing your own. Built on the open social web, and your data always remains yours. Where will the trail take you?

I don't get this. So your app is US-Only? OK, put that in your Claude md 🤷‍♂️ Asking for a list of things to improve should not be followed by "yes do all of these". It's an opportunity to reflect on where you are and where you might go. These are text generation machines. Engineering still matter.

if you never used llm coding tools, you should know: this is either manufactured for bait, or this person is the "holding-it-wrongest" user on the planet there's simply no benefit to not knowing the actual state of the thing you want to fight against. it is, in fact, a detriment.

i don't use Facebook, but I just learned they're now charging page owners to share more than two links per month, whether in a post or comment. insane bit of rent seeking enshittification.

Also - and this is interesting - there's new language that explicitly prohibits you from using *your own blood sugar data* (oh sorry, Dexcom's data, they own it apparently) with any AI system. Pretty sure this would prohibit something as simple as asking an LLM to analyze graphs for trends.

Deno spent years persuading developers to bet on a better runtime. Now its creator calls gains over Node.js “marginal” and says it was “sucked into the gravity well of node compatibility.” The backlash, the forks, and how AI is changing the future of JavaScript runtimes. socket.dev/blog/deno-ac...

Interesting indeed. If this works, sites that don't require high security can turn their login form into an email address entry and that's it. The user's email service session on that device becomes the proxy for the authentication. Really neat!

eliminating xslt is a huge middle finger to the open web this is something that has worked reliably for 25 literal years i know because i have been using it for 25 literal years the rationale is "it's old", "less than 1% use it", and that there are vulns in the implementation

judah@joodaloop.com

i would like to wish a very hearty go suck yourself to the engineers at Google who can’t maintain one measly XSLT parser with all their infinite agentic budget

Huh I am not sure I knew Tangled was built with HTMX, and I definitely didn't know they would soon not be. I wonder if there were some specific issues with HTMX or if it's just that "everything is a roundtrip to the server" is actually not that great.

ana@okami.mom

im glad tangled is killing the htmx site soon because its just breaking more and more. even the diff viewer is just consistently broken now

We need a better and more secure way to run on-demand, ephemeral, networked apps than what the web currently provides.

My idea of where cities are on the globe v where they actually are often creates fun moments. Like, which of these three is farthest north: Istanbul or Tokyo or New York? Which is farther west: Reno or Los Angeles? Boston or Aruba? Atlanta or *any* non-island point in South America?

This is why my design systems are centered on CSS, which has evolved but hasn’t been replaced in 30 years. Our design tools and frontend frameworks change every few years, but with a solid, bespoke CSS framework supporting your system, devs don’t even have to write CSS and it works with any stack.

Dave Rupert@davatron5000.bsky.social

Watched the @syntax.fm episode on how everyone's moving from Tailwind to StyleX and while I'm sure it's great, but it dawned on me that I haven't had "How do I write styles without scoping issues!?!?" problems in a long time. In #webcomponents, you write CSS. www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIG9...

i mean it's very easy to come up with failure modes for the various types of architectures. i'm the first to admit that SPAs are overused but i think critics are way too happy to throw out the baby with the bath water.

Jake Lazaroff@jakelazaroff.com

on the flip side, hypermedia apps tend to degrade rapidly without a network connection. if i put my phone on airplane mode and try to use the kanban demo, all my updates are lost and i get no feedback whatsoever — not even an error message. that is a dealbreaking bug! i'd rather use a normal MPA.

A modest proposal. The current people building the future are fucking it up. We want some better people to build the future. Perhaps even a future not built by pedophiles and oligarchs and fans of autocracy.

The killer feature of PWAs is not that they update automatically or they’re cross-platform. The absolute killer feature of PWAs is that they can be freely distributed without any app store dependency No risk that one party can kill your distribution and end your business. That’s a killer feature.

🚀 Container style queries are baseline; New attr() capabilities are nearly there. Neat apart, but together they change how we can wire up components. Practice will make perfect, and I still need to rewire my brain for this combo. So, time to start that rewire. utilitybend.com/blog/contain...

I keep repeating this fun fact to people while they stare at me with feigned interest: “helicopter” is a compound word, but probably not in the way you think! it’s made up of “helico” as in, “spiral,” from the Greek “helix” and “pter” as in “wing,” like in pterodactyl!!
