there's really no difference between this and saying that playing violent video games is harmful to the characters

dame@dame.is

Anthropic is introducing a new policy to address users who are being abusive and cruel towards Claude. This is good and shouldn’t be controversial. Humans that perpetrate abuse and cruelty towards things, even “inanimate” or “lower” lifeforms, should face consequences for their behavior.

i made a bet on preact last year as the foundation for my company's app and i've never once regretted it. easily the most underrated javascript framework. excited to upgrade to v11!

Jovi 🐨@jovidecroock.com

Preact 11 is out 🎉 We’ve been hard at work at making our diffing use modern features like moveBefore , leveraging ESM for tree-shaking Preact Compat and ensuring you have a great experience with resumed hydration.

"apps should be distributed, not hosted" has been rattling around in my brain for an entire month

Lyre Calliope 🧭✨@captaincalliope.at

Stray product(s) idea. A class of atproto apps should be spa's (single page apps) installable directly to our pds @wisp.place style. Apps should be distributed, not hosted. I should be able to install the Bluesky app to bluesky.captaincalliope.at, and then install that to my phone and desktop.

TIL!

that sort of technological solutionism always reminds of this interview with joseph weizenbaum — creator of ELIZA, the first chatbot! — on the role of computers in education ebiquity.umbc.edu/paper/html/i...

one mistake people make a lot is treating every technological incursion into a field as a form of progress when that is absolutely not always the case

journalism? ai is getting there medical? ai is getting there legal? ai is getting there farming? ai is getting there art? ai is getting there you can absolutely be a part of the creative and design process with ai, and you very well may keep a job! but your job is going to be very different

take for example touchscreens in automobiles, which some manufacturers have begun to phase out in favor of physical buttons because what makes sense on a phone doesn't necessarily make sense on a car dashboard or 3D TVs, which were once supposed to be "the future" but are now nowhere to be found

the good reason is that ~every native UI development toolchain is significantly more excruciating than web dev

Eternal Skies TCG RPG@eternalskies.neocities.org

You want to know why your thing sucks now? There's a 50/50 chance it is secretly a web browser and site for no good reason instead of a real computer program. I don't know why we've turned many things that should not be web dev into web dev, but here we are.

politics aside, it's fucked up that google maps can unilaterally decide that this is just what everyone sees now. users should have agency to label their maps however they want

The Internet is absolutely beautiful. A guy made a video about an artist at a Con with nobody at his booth who talked about a comic he made himself about Nigerian folklore. Artist woke up to 25k new followers and 200+ orders www.instagram.com/reel/DcUvl_u...

all the vibe coded apps is really killing my atproto enthusiasm icl gang, do folks have some recommendations for Organic Free Range atproto apps they like?

pretty wild how liberating it is to write code that just works in the browser without a build step

It's still incredibly pleasing to run through old projects converting TS into JS + JSDoc. I made the decision to cut out TS (excluding `.d.ts` files, they get a pass) from all my personal projects years ago and I'm still very much convinced that's the right move. TS as an authoring format ain't it.

bruh what is wrong with these people can you imagine windows asking for 15% of every purchase you make on one of their computers. its absolute clownery and its a big part of why apple has been losing their customers' respect for a decade now.

"you know how true and false are reserved words… can you imagine the havoc you could wreak on a project if you were able to redefine the words themselves to alter the fundamental nature of true and false? it would be absurd for javascript to allow this, and indeed it does not…" go allows it 🫠
