Maturing as a software engineer doesnโ€™t mean writing fewer Horrors, it means knowing when to write A Horror and how to construct the proper containment zone around it

I once inherited a python system that handled about $100m in ARR. It was a single Django class that was 25k lines long and had zero tests or docs that always called out to MySQL and postgres via fork+exec rather than actually using those client libraries

There is no such thing as over-engineering anymore. Be as ambitious as you know how. Make perfect, fast, accessible, maintainable software.

I *may* have over-engineered this shadow designer just a touch but gawwwddamn, she pretty. #Lumen for #CSS โ†’ lumen.renderg.host

We just sent $100,000 to 20 open source projects ($5000 each) that the Syntax team use regularly and depend on. Thanks to all the maintainers for all your time and efforts! Thanks to @sentry.io and @opensourcepledge.com for giving us the resources to do this. blog.sentry.io/another-year...

blog.sentry.ioWe just gave a million dollars to Open Source maintainersSentry raised its Open Source budget from $750,000 to $1,000,000 this year. Here's why, and how we split it among maintainers and foundations.

@sentry.io is a real one for this! $1M to open source maintainers this year ๐Ÿ™๐ŸŽ‰ for many years, Sentry was the only company using my software to actually donate to me. if nothing else, it was a big reason i decided to join the team! blog.sentry.io/another-year...

Building an atproto PDS in Zena today, that's going to be the basis of the Zena package manager. Fun times!

our ambitions have grown here because llm-assisted development allows us to cut through layers of abstraction like butter composability, performance, and size discipline all remain important, but we can raise the level of abstraction for author DX while lowering internals much closer to the metal

Wrote a blogpost about AI and atproto. Just a normal blogpost. Normal kind. (I actually did write the text of it.)

Yesterday, the CSSWG accepted my proposal for mesh gradients and diffusion curve gradients! Want to make gradients like this natively in CSS? Well, we've started the work on it. It's coming! Here's the Explainer: github.com/w3c/csswg-dr...

my strength as a junior was my fearless (yet exceptionally naive) belief that we are capable of building absolutely anything it's too easy to let life grind that belief out of you. don't!

conputer dipshit@davidcrespo.bsky.social

one very significant difference between junior and senior devs is that the problem for seniors is pessimism and too-low ambition for what the tools can accomplish based on a career of saying โ€no, thatโ€™s too much workโ€

I highly appreciate this directed graph showing which language is used to indicate incomprehensibility in different languages (eg, โ€œitโ€™s Greek to meโ€)

My support for bluesky/atproto is pretty much explicitly a "political" project. It is bad for a small number of (mostly right-wing) people to literally own all the sources of media. Open-source algorithms + the ability to move your account without negative network effects opposes this.

If the cost of generating and maintaining code is going down, open source projects should double down on community, people, helping their dependencies and upstream teams, building trust that they are good stewards of that piece of the ecosystem. Some are sadly going in the opposite direction.

natemoore on elm street ๐Ÿ‘ป reposted

One thing I'm hoping to come out of this is that Deno... or at least a derivative of it, is picked up by someone in the ecosystem and continued. We need choice and diversity in the ecosystem.

GM. Itโ€™s not that atproto is illegible to devs or even civilians but inscrutable via the systems of power that have taken over the internet. The sin of social media wasnโ€™t technical but aligning with the desires of established power and ours is the long hard work of breaking that alignment.

natemoore on elm street ๐Ÿ‘ป reposted

I was thinking about atproto more and had a thought: no one needs to know or care about the protocol. we just need to normalize the idea that itโ€™s bonkers to allow any company to own part of your identity itโ€™s like how you used to lose your phone number if you switched carriers. that sucked
