At what point do companies realize that "new and improved with AI" is not actually a selling point but something that actively repulses their current customers?

The supposed independent thinkers have gotten absolutely dog walked by the fascist right for years—and they just *will not* see it. Conspiracy theories as religion.

Vile stuff. Perfectly clear that Robert Kennedy Jr. is a fascist and trying to position himself as Trump’s heir apparent. I just want to take this moment to shout out all the post-left contrarian types who embraced him as some kind of independent voice for truth. Good job, losers.

I don’t think we should get used to a man this wealthy, this full of hate and this willing to demonize a small minority having so much power in our economy and in our politics. To defend democracy, we must defeat the oligarchs.

Hate on billionaire industrial capital all you want but even in places where Democrats totally control state government, they are not making investments in the humanities in public higher ed.

Democrats have trifecta control of government in 16 states; but not one of them has done what Republicans in Iowa and Florida have done in pumping millions of dollars into the humanities. ballotpedia.org/State_govern...

Do Democrats not see that the effort to build civic centers using taxpayer dollars and private funding at public universities is an effort to shape future voting preferences against them? Why aren’t rich Democrats counter the Right and funding normal humanities departments?

In my most curmudgeonly moments, I don’t see why presenting the prose output of a machine built on mass theft as your own scholarly work should be evaluated less harshly than old school plagiarism. Traditional plagiarists at least had to identify and evaluate the works they were going to copy.

Opinion: If AI is now part of academic writing, what should institutions actually evaluate? This essay argues that analytical writing should be judged by evidence, structure, argument, and accountability not by guesses about how each sentence was produced. https://chroni.cl/4eDRdjg

The sad thing is that historians both in and beyond the academy desperately need powerful institutional advocates, including scholarly associations that actually respond to the needs of their discipline and merit the trust of their members.

Public discussion of Christianity is often caught between New Atheist dismissal and sweeping, transhistorical assertions of its universal value. A new book sidesteps the culture war, revealing a Christianity indebted to the Roman world of Virgil and Augustus.

jacobin.comHow Revolutionary, Really, Was Christianity?Amid renewed interest in the religion across the political spectrum, the historian of antiquity Tim Whitmarsh argues in his new book, Rome’s Age of Revolution, that Christianity’s success relied on the physical and cultural infrastructure of empire.

You know, we've actually had long periods in this country's history when we taxed the very wealthiest at high rates. This isn't some uncharted territory. You might want to look at what happened to the rest of the economy. Sounds like you'll be surprised!

When we talk about "returns" on investments of taxpayer dollars, we need to emphasize that there are vital non-monetary returns that need to be thought about here. Many of those returns actually come from giving people the resources to think about history, culture, literature, art, etc.

Will any reporter ask the President of the United States to name the five specific states where he alleges that public school teachers are deciding -- all on their own initiative, over the objections of the parents -- to force their children into gender-affirming surgeries? Seems like a big story?

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump: "We have 5 states where your child goes off to school as Tim and comes back as Tammy 3 or 4 days later. It's true. And teachers make a decision. 'Goodbye Timmy I love you so much, I'll see you later.' And you say, 'Where's my son? My son is in the hospital.' Can you imagine?"
