We are PACES: Vancouver - Parents for AI Caution in Educational Spaces, a group of parents concerned by the effects of GenAI+chatbots on students.

Follows are not endorsements.
Over 2,500 people have signed the petition asking the BC Ministry of Education and Child Care for a two-year pause on AI in schools.
Research supports it.
NYC and LA have done it.
We can stop our kids being unconsenting beta-testers for this unproven tech.

You should stay far away from @dayofai.bsky.social "Day of AI".
It's full of foot-in-the-door incrementalism.
It will talk about how best to use AI, never about how using it harms students, and how they would be better off _not_ using it.
MIT would never publish something that questions AI.
"AI can draft an essay for you, especially if you give it a high quality prompt."
Really? This is what MIT thinks high schoolers should learn?
MIT's "Day of AI" dayofai.org provides materials for K-12 teachers and claims to have reached over 5,000,000 students to date. 1/2
"Schools need to figure out the best way to incorporate relevant technology to help people learn better."
Do we? Why? Why is it our job to find a viable use case for these crap products?

NDP appealed to right-wing voters they didn't get. Their base felt ignored and decided to not vote?

The prevalence of AI slop writing is changing the way people write. They are sounding more and more like AI.
Asking a chatbot for feedback on your writing has the same effect. It will make suggestions that make you more sound like AI.
You have a unique perspective and voice, don't lose that to AI.
The conservative playbook is to cut funding to schools. AI always comes up as a way to fill in gaps in teaching.
We need solidarity between parents, teachers and students to fight against cuts in funding AND against AI being sold as a "solution" to cuts.

The BC Conservatives have won a majority government following BC NDP leader David Eby's decision to call a snap election almost two years ahead of schedule.
Here's what a Conservative majority means for LNG, Indigenous Rights and more #bcpolithenarwhal.ca/bc-election-...
This alone is just a perfect chefs-kiss embodiment of how AI is a solution to nothing.
So it's OK to use AI to write something, then re-write it completely yourself and look up all of the evidence it cites.
So why not just look up the information and write it yourself? Why bother with AI?
What is happening just south of the border in Seattle should be wake-up call for all parents in BC.
Microsoft buying its way into the education system, students being told to use AI to generate ideas.

Day three of fourth grade and my child was presented with a school district (SPS) approved presentation about how using AI to generate ideas, brainstorm and do research is fine. I feel like I’m going to blow a gasket.
According to this the NDP haven't said anything about AI in schools?
Even the Conservatives, who think SOGI is out to eat their kids, have some meaningless "AI literacy" stuff in their policies.

We're looking at years of an even further anti-science pro-business provincial government.
What kinds of deals will the Conservatives cut to let tech companies become even further embedded in education?
When the fossil fuel industry controls government, the government deems pipelines in the natural interest, and outside the bounds of democracy.
Data centres are learning from the fossil fuel playbook.
AOC: "As AI begins to encroach in our society, their goal is to take your cognition away from you. AI's goal is to take your thoughts away from you, your ability to think away from you, so that you become dependent on a machine ... reading books is active resistance"

This piece by student journalist Naishu Vempali made me pump my fist in solidarity. I hope when I’m back teaching at UMass next year they take a class with me, where they can expect nothing but top quality human-grade feedback, interaction, and attention.

Sometimes talking about AI fanatics having the same views as eugenicists seems hyperbolic.
Other times they just come out and say that anything but their own language and viewpoint should be destroyed.
Daniel Hannan says learning languages is a waste of time now that AI can translate. He seems oblivious to the fact that learning languages develops analytical and interpretative skills that he wants schools to teach. And how would you know if the translations are wrong?
Vancouver had the highest voter turnout in years, and almost a fully progressive slate.
New West had lower turnout than last year, and was a right-wing sweep.
A big part of the electoral left's work needs to be getting the vote out: most people who don't vote would be voting more left if they did
NYC, Washington DC, LA, and even smaller suburban districts in red states have all paused or banned the use of AI in their school districts. It's time for Seattle Public Schools to do the same! Let me know if you'd like to get involved!
gonna end up with universities using “A.i.” to summarize recommendation letters professors wrote with “A.i.” for students who did their assignments with “A.i.” that the professors graded with “A.i.”
The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot
A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead:

Mounting evidence suggests that AI can impact foundational skill development for K-12 students. We gathered the research for you here: https://edut.to/4dIvVRi
Have faculty elsewhere had their admin introduce CircleIn (an AI "tutoring" app that is integrated into LMSs) & if so are your students receiving emails like this? Despite being told that we can opt our courses out of CI, we've reason to doubt that—plus this email directly undermines us as teachers.
The recent school board elections in Vancouver elected a majority of trustees who support a pause on AI in classrooms.
We asked provincial parties what their stance is. We have heard back from the BCGreens and OneBC, but not the NDP or Conservatives.

This especially odd as the BC Govt is suing OpenAI for its failure to notify authorities, as OpenAI's chatbot told the shooter how to best conduct the shooting and how to avoid detection.
