Thanks vline for trying to fit 12 train cars on a single 3 car set while Geelong sees half empty ones go out

Ho boy, do I have a story for you. The question of how ice breaks has been central to glaciology for well over a century.

Glen@gergyl.bsky.social

Didn't know this was especially controversial. Unsupported vertical ice obviously has a structural limit, determined by the distribution of internal fractures, especially ~vertical ones. Vertically fractured ice becomes a column crushing problem. Details are what's not known, and consequences?

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854

Ok... I'm going to need British History to stop reusing characters. Are you telling me that Waterloo involved General Wingate and Slender Billy and Burma involved Bill Slim and a General Wingate descended from that other one? What?

not the main point here but that is some gorgeous design

❄️☀️ China’s Qinling research station is showing that renewable energy can work in some seriously challenging conditions. The Antarctic base is already getting around half its power from renewables, with plans to eventually reach 100%. It could eventually replace hundreds of tonnes of diesel 🌱

Precisely this—the power attributed to technology makes it incredibly useful for laundering responsibility

The AI industry wants you to say "the AI just did that thing on its own!" Like, United Health's AI that's denying a shitload of claims with a 90% error rate? They wanted you to think it's just the AI.

Some humans have a subconscious nasal cycle. This means they breathe primarily through only one nostril, which changes every 2hrs. if only one of your nostrils gets blocked at a time when you have a cold, this is why. if you focus, you can also feel which one is "active" at any given time.

Tell me a fun fact.

@ptua.org.au @danielbowen.au any idea how many 3 car services melton will be punished with during the day after the 9 car services roll out? Surely standing room only services in the middle of the day aren’t desired?

Privatised public transport infrastructure is so wonderful. Southern cross is still working on replacing escalators after an entire year of degraded service

Can’t wait for an entire line of stations as part of a generational expansion of train services all being operated with the same quality

@ptua.org.au any idea why Transport Victoria and vline continue to be trash tier when it comes to bus replacements? Multiple no shows, a timetable that was written assuming no traffic at all and zero attempts to put any traffic management in for the buses

Sure there's no transition? Check out global new car and light truck sales by powertrain. ICE vehicles have lost 1/3 of unit sales in the past decade. Dramatic decline, and quite obviously not about to reverse. Source: iea.blob.core.windows.net/assets/a096b...

"In their seminal book Life After Cars, journalists Aaron Naparstek, Doug Gordon and Sarah Goodyear write that the noise, pollution, and epidemic of violent death brought to our streets by cars have become so ubiquitous that we no longer even notice them."

nsnews.comOpinion: Cars are the biggest threat on the road, not kids on e-scootersAll the outrage we feel about teens weaving on e-bikes and scooters would be better spent figuring out how to keep massive motorized vehicles away from all other road users

Getting blocked for pointing out that Sundown towns were real, that the movie The Purge even used Sundown town sirens, and that the premise of the Purge is dystopian horror for white people, but echoes reality for Black people.🤷🏿‍♂️ I'm OK with the block.

Mekka Okereke@mekka.mekka-tech.com

Except... The Purge was not an absurd premise? It was real, and really happened. The real life version of the purge wasn't one night a year. It was every single night. Again, a lot of dystopian horror is just "What if someone treated us the way we treated Black people?"

My real nuclear take is that most financial instruments including stock should be banned until the financial sector learns how to behave. Sorry you get to only have bonds and CDs
