Tue plan: There’s a bunch of client stuff to get through today, including a meeting at 1100 AEDT. There’s also administrivia, tradie wrangling, shopping, and various comms tasks. A busy day! As usual there’s further alleged plans in the Weekly Wrap. And ibises.

NEW BLOG POST: “Weekly Wrap 856: All the Birds of Success, and Ibises” stilgherrian.com/weekly-wrap/... Covers 19–25 October 2026 and includes all the usual links to Interesting Things.

My attitude to today has been shaped by the 4am koel, the 6am ravens, the 6.30am sneezer, and having screwed up my meds recently. Corrective actions have been taken.

Tuesday. A struggle to remain professional after a decline in the lemon supply. Show them the entertainment vegetable. Reputation! Tuesday.

The police chase is silly, yes, but also I’m admiring* the list of charges and outstanding warrants that bloke was running away from. He seems nice.

This post is unavailable.

Mon plan: Ease into the week because guess who forgot their meds last night. Stretches; set a new crowdfunding target; finish and post the Weekly Wrap; administrivia; get into some client work, or at least as much as my focus levels allow; quiet evening, I reckon.

Mon plan, an update: I needed a nap earlier and now I've been sent on a Special Mission. All those other things will still happen, however.

It's cloudy in Sydney for the moment but the Sun will emerge later. The temperature will be 3°C below the average for this date.

Sun plan: I’m mostly taking it easy today. Slothful morning; bird counts somewhere not too far away; ponder the week ahead, because it’ll be busy; Weekly Wrap; make a vegetable curry for dinner, because that has been the request. There will also be pluggage of the thing. We’re 96% of the way there!

CROWDFUNDER UPDATE: Can we finally hit the first target for the season by Sunday? Please support my podcasts “The 9pm Edict” and “Another Untitled Music Podcast”, my newsletter “The Weekly Cybers”, and my life in general. ko-fi.com/post/Can-we-...

Sun plan, an update: Still 96% of the way to the crowdfunder’s current target. I’m about to head out for a bird count, a little shopping, a quiet beer, and then home for the Weekly Wrap and the making of dinner. Very excitement, what with the thunderstorm coming through later.

Sun plan, another update. Nah, I’ll set the new target and post the Weekly Wrap tomorrow. It’s the weekend. You’ll cope.

Stilgherrian@stilgherrian.com

And yes, thanks to a few more generous people we've hit the target. Thank you all so much. That's now a total of six episodes of "The 9pm Edict" podcast this season, and I'll be surviving while I produce them. Cheers! I'll set up a second target later this evening because spring isn't over yet. 😉

It's about 6.20pm AEDT and we're 97% of the way to the first target. Thank you. I reckon we can close that gap tonight, yeah?

Lofts Garden, Campsie. Time: 4:45 pm Silver Gull × 2 Common Myna × 1 Welcome Swallow × 2 Rainbow Lorikeet × 8 Pied Currawong × 2 Australian White Ibis × 1 Noisy Miner × 6 Australian Magpie × 3 Galah × 3 #AussieBirdCount

Watching an Australian magpie who's taken his two offspring out for a stroll. I think he's showing them how to poke about for food. They're trotting along a few paces behind him. No photo because they're a bit far away.

It's kicking off! Dog is barking at the magpies and, when they fly, chasing them. Magpie is swooping the dog. Noisy miners are now swooping the dog as well. Dog runs back and forth to its human seeking approval. Human laughs. More barking and alarm calls!

Lol! Someone brought a little yappy dog to the park. Daddy magpie issues an alarm call and zooms up into a tree. Dog charges at kids and they too climb out of the way. Daddy magpie is now swooping the dog very aggressively.

This meme really shits me. This is not how you measure data centres because they come in all shapes and sizes. Data centres aren’t only about AI. The US has many smaller, older data centres. And the US is home to the vast majority of internet services that serve the entire planet. So much dumb. 1/2

Note for the hard of thinking: This is not an apologia for large-scale AI developments. This is not to say that there is or isn’t an AI race. This is just a complaint about such a dumb argument getting so much traction simply because it matches some people’s current gripes. Do better. 2/2

As it happens, Johanna Weaver and I talk about exactly this thing in this week’s podcast, although it’s only a small part of our conversation.
