I don’t know enough about socioeconomics to understand most of this, but the fact that China Mieville wrote an entire thesis about Marxist theory in international law is extremely metal

So that Bond villain plan to launch mirrors into space to reflect sunlight back at earth at night? It's already happening, and thanks to the oligarchs and their rubber-stampers in the federal government, there's not a whole lot we can do. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

Scarlett Camberos becomes the first Mexican woman to be nominated for the Ballon d'Or, finishing 21st in the official rankings amongst the Top 30 women footballers in the world and becomes the highest-ranked Mexican player in Ballon d'Or history (men's or women's) 🇲🇽 Orgullo Mexicano. Vamos, Scar.

A truly Pacific Northwest tale. English ivy is taking over every surface. Coyotes are eating all the local pets. Your only allies against the chaos are a fixie bike, the local gardening co-op, and some kid who plays too much D&D

I have a theory about one of the characters, but I will wait until more people have seen the film before I post about it.

(Also extremely fucking grim that what she describes is happening in the 21st century and not, you know, some dark age era we can conveniently ignore)

This is bizarre framing. The vast majority of immigrants come to the US for work or to escape violence. This implies a coordinated plan to influence elections. Only one person (a German) they interviewed even mentions voting. The rest just want legal security. www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/...

An amazing image from Twin Peaks, Dune, and Fallout star Kyle MacLachlan's memoir "Fictional Selves" that just shows how awesome Patrick Stuart is.

Gardening influencers are sharing end-of-season cleanup videos and I'm feeling smug bc the garden here at the house of inconvenient stairs still looks pretty good, aside from the usual late season powdery mildew. (It's nothing I'm doing; credit goes to the urban heat island. We stay pretty warm.)

Arabic names (including Somali and Egyptian names) are usually patrilineal patronymics. Your "middle name" is typically your father's first name. Your "last name" could be your grandfather's first name or your family name, or both, and you might use both interchangeably. None of this is nefarious.

So Ilhan could use "Omar" (grandfather's first name) or a family/tribal name as a last name, interchangeably. She'd also have the same "middle names" as her other siblings. All this is normal. Likewise, Abdul El Sayed is not "hiding" his middle name bc he doesn't have one. Mahamed is his dad's name

They think our naming conventions are weird! On my marriage certificate (I got married in Egypt) I am Gwendolyn, daughter of Middle Name, Son of Last Name, bc that's how their legal docs are set up. I tried to explain that we choose middle names just for shits and giggles and nobody understood.

One of the genuinely good bits of social media are the niche accounts doing fascinating work you might never otherwise have thought about. The Rural Indexing Project is one of my faves. Now they have a book coming out!

Rural Indexing Project@ruralindexing.bsky.social

We made a book! RURAL INDEXING: A COLLECTION OF AMERICAN BUILDINGS, SIGNS, AND SYMBOLS arrives from Rizzoli in March 2027. Our favorite themes and subjects from the thousands of places we've visited since 2010—450+ photos, many never published before. Preorder: linktr.ee/ruralindexingproject

I recommend starting your day by parkouring through your unfinished attic space to measure things while your contractor texts you saying "please do not fall through the ceiling." Better than CrossFit. I am very awake now

At one point I had a foot on a beam and a foot on a 2x4 thinking "so if you take away the insulation, a ceiling is just an inch of drywall?! damn"

Watching a show and I'm supposed to believe this character is sleeping on her back at 8 months pregnant. I can feel my lungs compressing just looking at her

This is incredible

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

Is that supposed to be Andrew Huberman?

Trump posted this bizarre AI video this morning without context, then added a screenshot from some random AI account on Twitter that reads: "Even Behind Bars, Bullies Can't Break a Strong Man. 💪🔥 Never Underestimate Someone Who Refuses to Give Up! 😱😱"

At some point a couple of months ago, another writer on here talked about switching her author website to an author-website-specific service, and how great and easy it was--and apparently I didn't save the post with the details. 😭 If that was you, please pipe up. Looking to switch mine over.

Yes parenting toddlers is hard, but parenting teenagers means frantically trying to resurrect your ability to solve linear equations at 10pm

Walked past this beautiful blanketflower (native to the western US) growing in an empty lot where an old building burned down a couple of years ago. Couldn't resist collecting some seeds. 😬 I imagine this is technically private property but God knows whatever equity firm owns the lot won't care.

Fellow WA voters, let's bury this. I can't imagine any parent wants to subject their child to this vile "examination."

Doctors and nurses are voicing their objections. I-638 would require EVERY girl who wants to participate in sports to go through biological sex verification. That means expensive, invasive, and utterly gross examinations. Protect our kids and let them play. Vote NO on I-638

this article confirms what ive been telling younger comic writers for years: unless you are very wealthy, there is no point to table in artist alley at a big show (unless table comped). you will not make your money back & your time’s better spent meeting people www.comicsbeat.com/is-artist-al...

comicsbeat.comIs Artist Alley even sustainable any more? It's more expensive than ever to set up in artist alley or at a comics show - and here are some of the numbers
