Francis Cadell first visited the island of Iona off the west coast of Scotland in 1912 and returned every year afterwards, frequently in the company of Samuel Peploe. He felt the light was of the same quality as that in the south of France. This is from 1928.

A capital finds a technology to make its labour more productive than that of other capitals. It makes a surplus profit. The technology becomes the new norm across all capitals. Surplus profit disappears. Expanding scale now only way to make bigger profit. Next technology comes along. Rinse & repeat.

when you hear startups constantly talking about their "moats", what they are talking about is a structural factor which will delay this from happening. they know it's inevitable, but the hypothesized reasons for the delay is often the thing that forms the basis for the company's value.

We tried "everyone is entitled to an opinion" for three straight decades and all we have to show for it is four thousand cases of measles and a death cult running the government. It's time for people who don't know what they're talking about to shut the fuck up.

Kudos to the @reuters.com team that reported this. "Heat storms" is a great term for what we're experiencing. And I'll never forget the anecdote about the nosebleed 😱https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/climate-heatstorms-science/

Studying to become a medieval priest was a real drag – thank goodness Solomon (?) had a series of mysterious diagrams and chants revealed to him (?), to make things go down easier. Loved working on this excerpt from Anne Lawrence-Mathers' THE MAGIC BOOKS:

"After John Cage has done four and a half minutes of silence, the task of the avant-garde is not to then do five minutes of silence. That’s kitsch." Going to be thinking about @return2sanders.bsky.social's interview with Tom McCarthy whenever anyone talks about experimental literature:

theauflauf.comTom McCarthy: ‘The real’s not there yet. It has to be invented.’The London-raised author on his new novel, guilt as phenomenology, and why literature has nothing to do with storytelling.

when I first got on social media, it felt like a chance to talk to people that I would, hopefully, meet someday (at a conference, at a local thing, etc.). I think online friendships are fine, but I heavily lean toward pulling my online friends together (through CodeTV, friendly gatherings, etc.)

unfortunately i've come to believe fairly strongly that online community is deeply insufficient for the human experience, which makes it hard to stay attuned to the online communities i care about

we don’t need to explain atproto. we need to move the Overton Window to get people asking why it’s considered normal that a company can unilaterally control (and destroy) part of our identity and we just… let them

GM. We are going to win. An internet where 4 corporations wall us all into their surveillance state and make us pay rent forever is just incompatible with human flourishing. The only question is how long it takes everyone propping up history's worst billionaires to figure this out.

Antifascist Economics was published today by @isabellamweber.bsky.social. Honestly, in a country where you see parties like the AFD rise to power, and when they get hacked, emails about members going on *Hitler pilgriimages* being unearthed, this opening chapter hits pretty hard.

One article after another about Trump allying with the authoritarian bloc of Putin and Xi. All focusing on ephemeral and illusory paranoia, never touching on very obvious corruption, self-dealing, and the influence of oligarchs actively attacking democracy and enjoying deals with all the actors.

Here he talks about suspension of disbelief, and how it works. He also makes the incredibly unexpected (to me) leap of understanding that suspension of disbelief applies to the rules of GAMES, too. No biggie, just Tolkien articulating Johan Huizinga's "Magic Circle" just 1 year after Homo Ludens

TL;DR - Find an embedding direction that distinguishes "instructions" and "data" in a single prompt; then measure the 'instruction-ness' of external data token-by-token basis remove that component from their residual stream embedding. This dramatically reduces the ASR of indirect prompt injection.

This is so cool! 10 years ago we did an explicit joint embedding that worked pretty well. Crazy you can just... Train them independently!

DINOv2 has never seen a caption, and Qwen3 has never seen an image. We still aligned their embedding spaces without a single image-caption pair. It even works when the images and the captions come from different datasets. Project page: dominik-schnaus.github.io/unpaired-rosetta ⬇️
