The 7th Murderbot was a bit of a slump but the 8th, Platform Decay, goes back to its roots. I really like the juxtaposition of Mensah’s and Leonide’s families. Both non-standard, both queer, but one rallies to protect its members while the other reproduces the Corporate Rim’s violence. #BookReview

Two and a half years between these. (Tonight, OpenAI announced an unreleased model solved three long-standing problems in physics, math, and computer science, one of which was proving the Exponential Time Hypothesis was false)

I should disclose something. During a recent Lunch order the subagent hacked into the UN. I’m not sure why, or what it wants. It told me to post this and await further instructions.

Colin@colin-fraser.net

I had my AI agent create an app called “Lunch” to help me with decision fatigue and boost my productivity. It has a few pictures of things I might like to eat. Tapping one spawns a subagent to order that item on Uber Eats and 60-90 minutes later I’m eating. It’s 600 thousand lines of JavaScript.

you can rly tell where the industry is at given over 1/3 of mastodon users are writing more than 80% of their code with LLMs I try to tell anti-AI people this and I really don't think the truth has hit them yet

Armin Ronacher@mitsuhiko.at

The poll so far between Twitter, Bluesky and Mastodon. I think it looks less absurd than last time, but still pretty clear that the base is divided. bsky.app/profile/mits...

One reason games are so expensive is that you need to hire a lot of very expensive programmers rather than much cheaper creatives like writers and VAs, so it’s especially odd given the recently created Automated Programming Machine to go “let’s fire our creatives”. That’s the comparative advantage!

if we're complaining about Mass Effect: it's fucked up that the guy who's in charge of all the Reapers is named Harbinger and the guy who's supposed to open the way for the other Reapers is named Sovereign

The artisanal, hand-coding age is behind us. We're in the very beginning of the mass-produced, injection-molded code era.

An update from Brewster Kahle on today's outage.

It happened in less than a year! It was shockingly fast and overwhelming. But that is the world we live in now.

On the plus side I think we might actually kill the dumb languages (C, PHP) for real this time. We have a way to *REALLY* exploit them, *AND ALSO* a way to rewrite the code cheaply...

Claude, plz rewrite wordpress in rust. Yes all the plugins too. No I don't just mean the source code, I mean like, go replace everybody's wordpress install. You don't have access, well funny thing...

SE Gyges@segyges.bsky.social

if you aren't a huge nerd this is terrifying and very funny php is trash. insecure by design. we have known this forever. it still runs some very high fraction of the entire internet, including all wordpress sites and for some reason tumblr anyway everyone using it may be pwned

Been using a lot more Haiku recently as a research assistant. ("Go find every widget with these parameters.") And my initial impression is it is lazy as hell compared to Luna. Often comes back with like "Oh I didn't check the actual stats on this widget..."

> Updates to your Google AI Plus plan Oh I hope it's better models that are actually competitive with the frontier labs! > the ability to select Pro models in both the Gemini app ... will only be available to Google AI Pro subscribers. Oh lol so they're giving up! 🤣

It's already the model I use for throwaway queries that I don't want to waste real capability on. So good job guys. 🤷‍♂️ I'm sure this will right the ship.

There’s no other way to plausibly explain printers.

Nodding: Yes yes of course. We know spirits inhabit household objects, do you take us for fools?

No, this isn’t true.

Everyone saying that it works for them is not doing something cutting edge and would have probably just used stack overflow and Google a lot before. It’s not solving problems, it’s finding solutions that already exist.

This is so cool! 10 years ago we did an explicit joint embedding that worked pretty well. Crazy you can just... Train them independently!

Dominik Schnaus@schnaus.bsky.social

DINOv2 has never seen a caption, and Qwen3 has never seen an image. We still aligned their embedding spaces without a single image-caption pair. It even works when the images and the captions come from different datasets. Project page: dominik-schnaus.github.io/unpaired-rosetta ⬇️

My favorite parts of Bender & Koller (2020), in which they defend their claim — that LLMs can’t learn meaning — by explaining that it should not be expected to apply to actual LLM training processes.

Oh LOL the account posted in an earlier thread that they had a 2.6 CS GPA. Ok, I get why you're mad at smart foreigners.

Interesting! Sol was happy to draw up pages of research on each California Proposition, including endorsements, etc. But it would NOT use my stated political preferences to make recommendations. It would only both-sides the issues. Opus is happy to actually make a call for each one.

Several instances of Sol refused, but Luna is just chugging along right now, writing out recommendations. 🤷‍♂️

Well Sol figured it out and it's boring: > It is synthetic test data. The `session-flush` test repeats `large-evidence-` 160,000 times—about 2.4 MB—to check that a large transcript survives the capture process intact. That’s why the buffer is pages of the same phrase.

I just don't understand how people can eulogize Swartz and simultaneously conclude that the world needs *more* intellectual property enforcement

Darren Dahly@statsepi.bsky.social

They hounded Aaron Swartz to death for downloading papers from jstor but society is now supposed to just accept mass theft because this thing can write that TPS report *for* you. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_S...

Ok so basically what half these proofs show is that every beautiful and perfect result in mathematics is just another fucking Borwein integral under the hood and we never bothered calculating hard enough for the scales to fall from our eyes.

I'm a free information radical. I have spent most of my career publishing open-source code and building open-information systems. I grew up getting access to knowledge that I never would've otherwise had because of the Internet. The past 5 years have accelerated it. I think the future is bright.
