I’m guessing the results from the first batch of GPUs in space are bad because instead of hearing about how wonderful orbital data centers are Elon has pivoted hard towards “only I can break regulations fast enough to build regular earth based data centers, unlike those losers at Coreweave”
Elon Musk says SpaceX closed $40B in GPU debt, debt markets have shut off credit for AI data center firms, and 200+ neoclouds face "death and consolidation" (Elon Musk/@elonmusk) Main Link | Techmeme Permalink
Sushi in Japan is for rich tourists and corporate expense accounts, not normal people. At nominal exchange rates (eg tourists), the median American is richer than all but the top 5% of Japanese households, and even adjusting for PPP differences they’re comfortably in the top quartile.
@evanwch.bsky.social Most Americans think the Cheesecake Factory is a "nice and fancy restaurant" while the French get farm fresh cheese at gas stations and the Japanese get flawless sushi in subway stations BECAUSE US capitalism has kept us poor and abject. So that's for pointing our the problem.
One reason games are so expensive is that you need to hire a lot of very expensive programmers rather than much cheaper creatives like writers and VAs, so it’s especially odd given the recently created Automated Programming Machine to go “let’s fire our creatives”. That’s the comparative advantage!
One thread they dropped completely after ME1 was you were supposed to be a spy, not a super soldier! Like the council called you up and went “listen up 007, we think this guy is dirty, go check it out and maybe push him out a window in a plausibly deniable manner if he is” bsky.app/profile/slic...
ME1 felt like solving a mystery while running over mechs in your lowrider tank
Not relevant to the headline per se but I love how after WW2 Japan just invented 20 fake holidays and named them shit Tree Day and Respect for the Elderly Day and Culture Day, which happened to coincide with like Imperial Dominion Over Manchuria Day or whatever they previously celebrated
Just announced: Shigeru Miyamoto has been awarded the prestigious “Order of Culture” award from the Japanese government, for his “contribution to Japanese culture”. The Emperor will present Miyamoto the award on the Japanese national holiday “Culture Day” (11/3). news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/ca2...
A huge pet peeve of mine is that literally the oldest and most basic genre of storytelling, the tragedy, has entirely vanished from mainstream big budget media for inscrutable and baffling reasons. The most recent original example I can think of that isn’t a remake/prequel might be Breaking Bad!
Last year the CEO of a multi billion dollar quantum “company” absolutely lost his shit at me in public and started yelling at me for being disrespectful little shit because I asked a simple question about the claim he had made one sentence earlier. These people rely on identifying and fooling fools!
Right, that’s the trick: people expect fraudsters to be masters of words and emotions who will cast a spell on you, but in reality it’s someone saying “I made the greatest thing on earth, don’t worry about the details, give me money?” and you being too afraid of missing the boat to say no.
Obviously the answer is just that men are better at it than women. As the time investment to cook falls and wages equalize, the comparative advantage of women cooking vanishes, and men return to their natural place in the kitchen. This is why it's diffusing out from the upper middle class first.

A very good approximation of the “quality of life” in a city is the marginal cost of moving there, ie market rent per square foot in units of income. If you tried to build a better index you might be able to, but it would probably have a R^2 of 80% and the graph would not looks like this.
Sacramento is, by these metrics, the best value and some of the highest quality of life anywhere in the west. California incomes and sunshine with Portland’s prices and Denver’s access to nature is I guess a ranking-friendly combo?
Alex Karp really is the perfect spokesman for neurodivergent people online, in that can’t fucking do anything beyond self medicate with cocaine and yap about how much smarter he is than everybody else
“‘There are basically two ways to know you have a future,’” Palantir CEO Alex Karp said. ‘One, you have some vocational training. Or two, you’re neurodivergent.’” 3/25/26 share.google/BSpEdevJ0wx9...
This paper makes school closures look pretty good! It finds they are the second most effective NPI overall, behind only masking, and argues that cost doesn’t justify it. But to get to that $26mm number they need to use an absurdly high number for education value and still only end up at 2x VSL.
lmao this is such a sick way to conclude that COVID school closures were a mistake www.kuow.org/education/20...
