one thing you learn from making a lot of things is that the nitty gritty details, the millions of tiny invisible decisions, ARE the art. The "higher level ideas" are not nearly as important or interesting

Freya Holmér@freya.bsky.social

"AI lets you focus on the higher level ideas!!" because we all grew up dreaming of becoming managers and CEOs we all know the real artists at the very highest level are the shareholders, famously full of amazing ideas

Imagine looking at the media landscape—music, books, movies—and concluding that it would be better if it were all simply infinite reflections of yourself, if you never had to be exposed to another personality, another experience, another life. Just you, you, you. Sounds fucking horrifying.

part of why I don't like AI is bc it's so often the antithesis of caring for the little things, the appreciation of the mundane, of seeing beauty where others haven't yet been able to, and seeking genuine fundamental understanding all in the name of "get product faster" I find it so disheartening

the greatest tragedy of ai will be all of the kids who never become real artists because they exhausted their momentary hyperfixation by ordering up worthless slop about it instead of scribbling out some beautiful trash on their own and getting the drawing virus permanently

I am exasperated with people accusing programmers of "gatekeeping" programming. We were practically dragging people through the gate. Do you know why a mindless LLM can tell you so much great programming information? It's because we've been sharing that information for free online for decades.

Like two fuckin weeks on Linux and I'm already a "telling my artist that, really, console git is simpler to use than a GUI anyways" person I AM ON RECORD AS LOATHING GIT AS RECENTLY AS THIS YEAR Linux: not even once

Godot’s new AI policy is here. the TL;DR: all code must human authored.

Godot Engine@godotengine.org

For years we have been overwhelmed by the volume of code contributions we have to review, especially from new contributors. AI has made the problem much worse. That's why we are taking steps to reduce the burden on maintainers while still welcoming new contributors: godotengine.org/article/cont...

hearing "don't get into this industry" is disheartening for many, but please consider the youths who only get fired up when they are acting in opposition to an authority figure. someone has to tell them it's impossible or else they will never build up enough spite to prove the man wrong

I know this will piss some people off, but I just used AI to write a short story for the first time and I gotta say: As someone who hates writing, hates reading, does not like people, doesn't want to do anything ever, and has never felt anything approximating joy... this is a game-changer.

oh no, i don't use the ai for <thing that i am paid to do> it's terrible at that. it's great for <thing you are paid to do> though.

Non-existent. Essential to the appeal of comics is its hand-crafted nature, a particular point of view and style evident on the page. Anyone who uses AI to make comics is an outlier, because the audience is overwhelmingly uninterested in a comic no one bothered to make.

Friday already? This week just flew by! Busy day today, but I think we can still have some Office Hours. Comment here to leave a question about me, my books, or writing in general. If you like, you can use this handy-dandy anonymo-tron: ngl.link/planetx2

Everything sucks right now, but looking back through history, truly when hasn’t it?? (Especially for anyone marginalized.) I don’t think it’s being naive or a distraction to find joy and hope in life despite everything, I think it’s necessary really. I’ve come too far to be pessimistic.
