OKAY! A friend on bookstagram asked for queer novella recs, and I said, I HAVE TO DO A WHOLE POST ABOUT THIS. But once I made my stack, the intrusive thoughts began: "what if you invented a whole bunch of arbitrary categories to sort these books into so this isn't an undifferentiated pile of book?"

For @comicsbeat.bsky.social, I reviewed Tillie Walden’s CHARITY & SYLVIA, which fleshes out extensive documentation of two real queer women who lived openly together in a small town in Vermont in the 19th century. Walden is at the height of her craft here. This book is incredible. My thoughts:

Britain is a nation of animal lovers. These people aren't. The government is consulting on a ban right now, but it closes on the 18th of June. Five minutes of your time could end this for good. Have your say: consult.defra.gov.uk/defra/trail-hunting-consultation

I will just say that a close family member who works with AI, when asked how the data is secured, said "it isn't".

my favorite saying to remember this is: "you could be the juiciest peach and some people just don't like peaches."

Katie Croonenberghs Art@kamakru.bsky.social

It seems obvious, "well of course not everyone likes everything, Katie!", but I see too many creatives worried about the fact that not everyone likes their work. I'm trying to say that the sooner you understand it's impossible, the more freeing it is. Sometimes it's just not a match and that's ok!

this game is AI slop. I don't care if they replaced everything, they still used it, still forced their employees to clean it up, and if someone steals once you can't really trust them not to again studios need to understand that AI usage is toxic and our behavior is the only power we have

Crystal Dynamics has responded to its AI use in Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, telling Eurogamer "we leverage AI tools to help our teams iterate on ideas faster and more efficiently, while ensuring that all finished content in the final product is human-crafted" www.eurogamer.net/tomb-raider-...

Note to media: police arresting peaceful protesters singing “give peace a chance” is not protesters “clashing” with police. It’s the state violating the First Amendment rights of people upset that human beings who did nothing illegal are being held without due process and being fed maggots.

Serendipitous discoveries in the archives and stacks aren’t possible if you shut them down “The document – a scrap of parchment inserted into an account of the Ramsey Abbey manor of Warboys in Huntingdonshire…”

I sure do feel boiled, but we managed to tour Oxford University and the cathedral, plus look at many cool buildings today. Big thumbs up to the mid-day mango passionfruit smoothie. Lifesaver.

Noticing how most holidays strayed further from their meaning to signify "a day off" and then to "a day to sell shit" is one of those "let this radicalize you" moments. Navigate capitalism as best you can, and sure, snag a deal along the way, but it is really kinda fucked up.

Ian Rose@ianrosewrites.bsky.social

I have seen two ads this week saying a version of "Honor Memorial Day with great savings on ..." It's pretty offensive, and we accept it as normal. No judgement at all if you buy something cheap today. It's tough out there. But the use of dead service members to sell mattresses is nasty work.

Technically one year late, but I booked my mom and myself a night at a castle. It's beautiful! We walked around earlier in the day to see the exterior and the gardens, then had afternoon tea. We are now hiding out in our room from the oppressive heat. 10/10 would recommend

For a timeline cleanse, here’s a shot of a whale tail today in the ocean off of Provincetown. That green tint in the water is caused by phytoplankton, tiny microscopic plants with chlorophyll that reflect green light onto the whale’s white underside. I hope you are having a great day!

The fact that Nyong’o’s beauty is causing a war between two rival cultures in America right now is proof enough that she is the perfect Helen of Troy.

Which is one of the major reasons it's important to avoid using dehumanizing rhetoric for *anyone*, even your enemies, even casually, because any time you rhetorically draw a line around "human" that doesn't include every human, you are reinforcing that propaganda effect.

I’ve never had a single problem sharing spaces with trans people, they’re just people living their lives for fucksake. I do have an issue sharing spaces with transphobes, people who think women’s bodies should be policed.

I’ve been working on “The Lovers” when in the flat here in Cornwall. I think it’s done, but I’ll give it another look over when I get home. I planned this composition to maybe crop the painting into a large oval frame, but not so sure I want to now. Ravens, Glastonbury abbey, and may blossoms.
