It’s IX time! This is a small detail of one of the brand new paintings I’ll be revealing at the IX Art Show for the first time. Looking forward to seeing you at the Goggleworks Center for the Arts in Reading, PA this week for a celebration of imaginative realism in art. imaginativerealism.com

How about a little slice of life in the studio? Haven't done that in quite some time. Was really in flow state making these drippy granulated watercolor textures for a while. I wish the red red didn't wig out my phone camera so much, it looks better in person.

One of the paintings that was stolen was this one, framed. It’s big - like 15x20”. I’ve been tasked with putting together an inventory, which is an awful thing to do. I’m grateful that I have five paintings in my apartment on my walls, but for some reason I stored this one.

Exciting news! Congratulations and best of luck to MtG and DnD workers. As a freelancer working with Wizards of the Coast, you have my support.

Traditional watercolor illustrators who struggle with clients wanting transparent background files for spot illustrations: Affinity Photo has an "erase white paper" filter. I just started playing with it, but it's kind of magical. Total game changer. I had no idea it existed. Mind blown.

I have several pieces in this group exhibit featuring work from dark artists throughout our region- opening tomorrow, join us! Phantom Narrative V Opening Reception: Thursday, October 1, 4 - 7 pm Carroll Community College, Gallery in the Scott Center, Westminster, MD Exhibit Oct 1 - Dec 5, 2026

I made official shirts for Bewitching Peddlers of Halloween in 2024 and 25. I have a few left (not all sizes available) and have marked them down to $15 just to cover printing and shipping. www.joannabarnum.com/shop

“Autumn Arrival,” watercolor from several years ago…the season blowing in. Can you feel it? Happy fall! Getting spooky. Getting cozy.

Many of these sold at the show, but the otters and the butterfly/flowers/Stonehenge piece are still available. They are $200 each. www.joannabarnum.com/shop/river-o... www.joannabarnum.com/shop/butterf...

Made another batch of these little experimental mixed media pieces before DragonCon. This group inspired by species from Cornwall with collage bits from old books I got in a local shop while there. I love making these as a palette cleanser between bigger projects.

“Magpie Study (Two for Joy)” finished just in time to bring to Dragon Con! Saw so many of these guys in Cornwall, where we learned to “salute the magpie” to counteract any bad luck from seeing a single magpie. At first we took it quite literally, we started giving them a military salute.

Then we learned that it’s more of an old timey way of saying you should greet or acknowledge them. Apparently many people say “Good morning, Mr. Magpie, how is Mrs. Magpie?” I love magpies and can’t help but be overjoyed to see them, alone or in groups. Here I painted two with English bluebells.

The common magpie in the UK is Pica pica, whereas the magpies in the western United States are Pica hudsonia, even though they look indistinguishable to me. Apparently they were considered the same species until the year 2000. Prints & original are up in the shop. www.joannabarnum.com/shop/

“The Lovers,” watercolor. I painted this piece in the flat in Cornwall earlier this year, based on my photos of the Glastonbury Abbey ruins, a possible legendary burial place of Arthur and Guinevere. Some legends say that upon his death, Arthur transformed into either a raven or a Cornish chough.

When visiting the famous Stonehenge & Avebury, I was struck by the great efforts ancient people undertook working together to create these monuments, digging with simple hand tools, and moving stones across great distances, during a time when simply surviving took a great deal of energy and effort.

We can’t know for sure exactly what these monuments meant to the people who built them, but I feel a deep resonance across the ages with the human urge to create for artistic, symbolic, memorial, and spiritual reasons, beyond the strictly practical.

My plein air paintings from Cornwall earlier this year. The originals and limited edition prints are now up in my shop, along with lots of studio work inspired by the trip. It’s a big update! I’ve been sitting on a lot of stuff to drop at once. www.joannabarnum.com/shop

It’s my birthday! I’m 42! That means you have to share my art- that’s the law, right? Incidentally, I’m currently looking for interesting publishing projects for the first part of 2027.

Me, to my acting up printer, after running maintenance: Oh, were you just a dirty, dirty boy? Mike, from the other room: The fuck is going on in there?

You ever decide on some unifying “rules” for a self-generated collection of art and then partway through the process get progressively more frustrated with the rules, as if there is ANYONE to blame but you yourself?

"Orion" - collage on heavyweight paper A long overdue collage commission. Thanks to the commissioner for being so patient. I had so much making this and it felt good to play on my own court for a bit.

Looking for artist reviews of the Canon Pro-1100 printer? My Pro-1000 just broke after a good 7 years but the model is discontinued. Looks like the 1100 is the replacement. (Also, um, anyone with a pro-1000 want a deal on extra ink?)

Looking forward to seeing you at Gen Con in less than a week now! I’ll be at exhibitor booth 1360- a couple rows to the right of the art show, near the back of the hall. #gencon #gencon2026

A couple photos for scale on the originals.
